SI's Post-Spring Football Rankings: MSU #14

Sorry if already posted. I think OK State, TAMU and S. Car are over-rated. I think MSU is right at #14; no problems with the rest of the Big10. Seems like after #4, there's a big jumble of teams; not sold on Stanford minus Harbaugh, or the 3 teams I listed above. Florida State at #9 is a bit of a reach as well, but who else goes up there? Not Arkansas, and with other big time powers like TX and USC not garnering attention, there seems to be a bit of a power vaccuum in the top 10. I almost feel like Boise's at #10 by default.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Just read this a few hours ago. MSU at #14 seems about right to me, too.

I agree that South Carolina and Florida St. seem way out of place. It seems that most teams generate a 'wait and see' attitude. #14 is a good place to start.

You figure MSU will start the year 2-0; I'd expect to move up a few spots by virtue of a team or two stumbling out of the gates. Beat ND and we're in the top 10. Beat tOSU and we're probably top 7.

That's the advantage of a decent pre-season ranking; much easier to move up once the year starts. I think we were only #17 after we beat Wisky (5-0) last year. This year we could/should be 10 spots higher with the same record and same # of wins.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Nonetheless it's pretty cool to see how much different the game was back then.

  • It's pretty difficult to accurately rate OSU and Wisconsin at this point. . . the 5 game OSU suspension will need to absorbed by OSU's player and coaching depth which seems possible to me since it relates to the early games of the season. As for Wisconsin, I really thought they would be eminently beatable being a one trick pony on offense with no passing, but now with the Wilson factor raising its ugly head. . . Wisconsin could be a real factor.

  • We better enjoy this while we can. Now that Brady " Bear Bryant" Hoke has taken over at U of M and is cleaning our clock recruiting, we are doomed to SOS in a year or two.

Yea, Russel Wilson + Wisky = problems for the rest of the conference. Then again, Wilson's a 5'11 200 pound guy playing in the B1G . . . he may not last the season (if he even comes to UW).

OSU, with Pryor and the others is a top 3 team this year. WIthout, I see them at #9 or so. That defense is top 10 almost every single year and only one DE back-up is suspended for our game; bottom-line, MSU has to deal with a top 10 D on the road. Our D could be top 20 next year, so it should be a great match-up. Come out of there with a W, and MSU is looking very very good in the B1G race, especially with Nebraska playing Wisky and tOSU in the 1st 2 weeks of the year. Hell, I could see tOSU overlooking MSU in favor of Nebraska (though unlikely, as MSU should carry a top 15 ranking into that game).

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

UM fans dont like earning everything. They have been ATROCIOUS for three years and now have a mediocre head coach. They need to win. Period. They have every chance in the world to win and gain back their attention to the program but now they have to work for it and they dont like it.

  • I fully expect us to be ranked between #12-15 when the actual polls come out. It's nice to get some love, but that SI poll is pretty bad all the way around, imo. A few spots are nailed, but it seems others were put in a spot for shits and giggles.

I like you guys at #14 and think our teams will start the season beside each other in the polls.

I'm down with USC being in the 12-15 range. What're your thoughts on the TAMU/OK State rankings? Both seem very very high.

Yea, I think both will be pretty good, but Top 10's a bit of a reach. I think A&M will fall into the same trap a lot of teams do: Better team but worse record because of some of the scheduling differences.

OK State's going to have to show me they can win games without outscoring people. That's nice and all, but Blackmon getting knocked out of a game early would kill their offense.

I think you were right in saying 6-10 were put together because there was a lack of teams that actually belonged there. I will say that part of the reason we were #9 is because (with the exception of UGA, who I don't think will be very good this year) it would be a HUGE disappointment if we didn't start the season 6-0 or 7-0.

Based on schedule, I'd expect Iowa to be in the top 15-10 towards the end of october. They're set up for a 9-0 or 8-1 start at the worst and probably an 9-3 record at worst. 3 tough games; @ PSU, MSU and @ Nebraska. They avoid Wisky and tOSU.

09/03/11 vs. Tennessee Tech Iowa City, IA
09/10/11 at Iowa State Ames, IA
09/17/11 vs. Pittsburgh Iowa City, IA
09/24/11 vs. Louisiana-Monroe Iowa City, IA
10/08/11 at Penn State * University Park, PA
10/15/11 vs. Northwestern * Iowa City, IA
10/22/11 vs. Indiana (HC) * Iowa City, IA
10/29/11 at Minnesota * Minneapolis, MN
11/05/11 vs. Michigan * Iowa City, IA
11/12/11 vs. Michigan State (FW, FA, S) * Iowa City, IA
11/19/11 at Purdue * West Lafayette, IN
11/25/11 at Nebraska * Lincoln, NE

  • Yea, that's pretty damn easy. I shouldn't talk too much, because our SEC schedule is about as good as you can get. Out of conference isn't as pathetic-looking as the past, but we should still win those games with little difficulty. The 3 game stretch with all away games (including a bye week) will definitely define our season:

Sep. 3 at East Carolina (actually "neutral" in Charlotte at BofA Stadium)
    Sep. 10 at Georgia
    Sep. 17 Navy
    Sep. 24 Vanderbilt
    Oct. 1 Auburn
    Oct. 8 Kentucky
    Oct. 15 at Miss. State
    Oct. 29 at Tennessee
    Nov. 5 at Arkansas
    Nov. 12 Florida
    Nov. 19 The Citadel
    Nov. 26 Clemson

No Bama and no LSU!??!?! How'd you pull that?!

I'd say anything worse than 9-3 and yuo guys are having a lot of problems. Actually, I really only see @Miss State and @ Arkansas as games where you could be the underdog.
