SI's Stewart Mandel: MSU fans in for rude awakening

  • Blake Miller said...

What is the relevancy of the size of their offensive coordinator?

And for that matter, the health of his ankle?

    Offensive Center.

Why does everyone expect scum to beat osu?

Because OSU lost at Purdue in overtime and Michigan crushed Purdue at home. Therefore, by transitive property, Michigan will defeat OSU. Surprised you don't know basic delusional fan arithmetic...

  • It's not possible that we experience a rude awakening since we have all been discussing this possibility ad nauseam.

I like MSU's chances in that game.

We already beat them once without our best defensive player.

Wisky ends the year with @illinois and penn state.

MSU ends with Indiana and @Northwestern.

Based on the schedule alone, msu should be healthier and better rested.

That game against Penn State for the Leaders championship will not be a cake walk. Penn state isnt just going to hand over their tickets to Indy.

I remember Worthy and Bullough and Robinson playing.

All 3 of those guys are more important/irreplaceable than Big Will.

Illinois is nothing, even when they were playing well they were tooth and nail with Northwestern AT HOME.

The Penn State game is very relevant, That is a team that will straight beat up your Offense.

Michigan is @ home, plays really well at home, and Miller has been erratic as hell on the road?

    4) I doubt we will block another punt for a TD.

    5) Our D is way ahead of their D.

Yep, their D is not scary. You need to be on top of your game, and keep them off balance.

They don't have scary pass rushers or elite speed.

Anybody see the clip of the Minny kicker jocking Wisc's corner on that fake FG?

    (EDIT: Scary not scarring)

I wish the D's played each other, because their O is ahead of ours. It should be another close game. (If they play)

Also, our punting has been much better the past few games. Abbrederis busted a couple nice returns that set up UW scores, if you recall.

Also, if we don't get a punt blocked for a TD, how likely is it that we turn the ball over at our own 25 again?

I know we have to beat IU and Northwestern first, but I'm starting to get excited for this CCG match-up.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

He's saying that because UW's D isn't as good as MSU's, it'll offset the fact that MSU's O isn't as good as UW's. Basically it's strength v. strength and (relative) weakness v. weakness. I do like the way our special teams have been playing recently though, and that's been a problem for UW all year.

Old bit, but this system is so asinine. I still see no sense in a team that finished a game or more behind in the division, getting a better bowl because the weren't good enough to get to the conference title game, and thus taking another loss than the team that finished in 1st.

The bowl system isn't about rewarding good teams--it's about making money. If a bowl could take a 6-6 UM team and make more money (and not take too much shit for it) than a 11-1 MSU team, that's exactly what they'd do. Fans have to realize the bowl system is a financially based system that has nothing to do with play-offs, rewards, atta-boys. They exist to make cash.

So, we don't win the CCG, we get what we get. If we don't get the Rose Bowl, I want to win whatever bowl we get. Let UM get curbstomped by Alabama. I'll take a "lesser" bowl and curbstomp some poor 4-5th place SEC/PAC10 team.

How is this a 'rude awakening' for MSU fans? Most know we're probably bound for Pasadena or Tampa. I don't see many projecting us dropping below the Outback.

I doubt this is true for the casual fan. I think it could be a rude awakening for a great many folks.

I'll stick with Dantonio, "We just have to do it our own way.".

We pissed away ANOTHER midfield or better return from Hill again vs Iowa upset

It would be great if the Spartans could beat UW again. Shut up ESPN/Beilema/Delaney/Walverines/Pellini & staff all at once. I see it as coachd's 2011 Grand Finale matched only by Michael Corleone's snuffing of Moe Green & the heads of the other four familes!

  • Why does anyone care what Howie Mandel thinks?biggrin

    Madhatter536

  • This scenario where MSU loses the CCG and UM goes to a better bowl has been discussed on this board repeatedly.
I think most MSU fans are well aware of the scenarios that could potentially leave MSU out of the BCS (again).

    Phil McCrackin

  • Wouldn't be the first time or likely the last where the Outback publicly says how excited they would be to have MSU appear but are in fact praying they get to invite UM, OSU, PSU and apparently now Nebraska.

    WBill19542

  • Unless one of those teams goes to the BCS, I couldn't give a shit if they pass us in the bowl selections. The goal is to win the division and get to the title game. If we do that and they do not, we had a better season. The bowl selection beauty pagent doesn't mean a thing.

Oh. Good thing he was called the offensive center so we didn't confuse him with the defensive center.

Every MSU fan should know the lay of the college football landscape. For us, it's Rose Bowl or bust. We can't control what UM gets or doesn't get, so if we're going to whine about what bowl game we get, that's just wasted energy. Given the relative choice a bowl will take UM over MSU pretty much any day of the week. It's all about name brand recognition and cash. It's the bowl system, and it sucks. We've kicked their ass four years in a row--that's my happy thought and comeback if any of those losers feels sense of superiority over the matter.

I don't think Mandel is talking about a bunch of nerds on a message board. He's talking about people who aren't familiar with the bowl system and all that, aka the casual fans who only watch games and that's about it.

What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...
