Scariest Video Game

  • There are points in Manhunt that will make you question your life decisions - specifically playing that game. The first half of the game is terrifying - the second half it turns into a shitty shooter, but the penultimate boss is amazing.

I was wondering for all my fellow video game nerds out there what's the scariest video game you've ever played? I just went through FEAR 1 and 2 on Xbox 360 and those were pretty good. Up for trying anything.

FEAR 1 was pretty scary for a game. I always tried to play it at night in a dim room to heighten the effect.

Scariest I've played was the Resident Evil on gamecube, but i've heard terrifying things about Amnesia as well. Also, Bioshock is definitely worth playing despite being less scary. The gameplay/setting/plot combined with a tasteful amount of "shit yourself" moments (like the room with the dentist), makes it one of my favorite games to play.

That game terrified me, resident evil on GameCube. I had to have been no older than 9 playing that with my older brother. We were scared shitless playing that game.

Yeah, I actually never owned it. Spectating was scary enough for me. I distinctly remember my 14th birthday party huddled around the TV with 10 other guys watching my friend creep through the game. I don't think we bothered falling asleep that night...

  • honestly, home alone, in the dark, with no three dog radio playing...Fallout 3 in the subway tunnels could be creepy as hell.

I was playing the demo for FEAR 2 and my wife asked me to stop it was so creepy.

Just thinking back to older horror games: does anyone remember 7th Guest and 11th Hour? They weren't particularly scary, but they had some really strange moments. Some of the puzzles (the stupid furniture puzzle) certainly took years off my life.

Scariest areas in Fallout 3 include the Dunwich Building and the Vault with all the insane clones running around. But yeah, the game definitely gets scarier without music.

  • Some Coleco game called, I think, "Venture". If iyou spent too much time in a level, this huge green monster would come out and kill you. Apparently at 4 or 5 yrs old it scared the crap out of me.

I've wanted to go back and play some of my childhood games or ones i wasnt allowed to play but Doom was a letdown after a decade of kickass 3D cards so I'm leaving some memories alone.

Also, i just picked Comany of Heroes back up on the PC (because I am in need of an upgrade and it is one of the few fun games I now of that still runs well on my poor machine. I've gotta say that I've played a fair amount of RTS games and nothing has made me go "Oh shit...!!" as much or as often as CoH campaign mode.

ahh yes, Dunwich building was definitely unpleasant. I think you get a bobblehead in there, though.

And this thread made me think about Dead Space all over again and how awesome of a series it is. I can't figure out which i preferred, maybe the first one? I think the second one had scarier moments but the first one had scarier environments. I will always remember the medical bay as being one of the most excruciating areas to crawl through in any game.

I would play both of those in the dark, alone after my roommates went to bed. I got some mad credit for that as neither were ever able to do that. I think those kind of games, you have to play that way. It's a much greater experience.

Also, no spoilers, but i loooved the ending of Dead Space 2.

Yea medical bay was really creepy. Medical bay and that garden where you meet the boss in the freezer. These 2 places scared the crap out of me. And the first time you meet the mini boss where you have to freeze him. Also the part before you shoot down the asteroids was real creepy. But I think the most intense and scariest place was the other ship where you meet the marine necromorPhs. Not only are they scary but a bitch to take down without stasis

I don't remember exactly when it was in Dead Space 1, but at one point I found myself looking down the all-time creepiest hallway. It was foggy, the lights were flickering, and there was a hole in the wall halfway down not to mention all of the weird noises. I had been playing for a few hours in the dark and just looked down that thing, said eff it, and turned the game off lol

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's requim for Gamecube.

This game was freaky back in the day. Your character would get scared and had a sanity meter, which if depleted, lead to strange things happening. Great game.
