Scary, freaky car thing happened to me - wtf

  • right front wheel came off while I was making a slow left turn. All 5 lugnuts/bolts completely sheared off. Had to drive about 30 feet on the rotor to make it to safe harbor.

Car experts - what would cause this. I'm still pretty shaken up/freaked out about it. My mechanic said I was lucky to only be going about 15 mph. Could've been a lot worse.

Do you have regular checkups on your car? If so you might want to get a new mechanic. I was on I94 in Detroit last year and a tire/rim came rolling off the car in front of me. I put my emergencies on and trailed him into the shoulder so he'd be safe.

I don't believe Michigan has any mandatory safety inspections for vehicles, while many other states do. I really wish we would. Somebody was driving down 696 a year or two ago and a rim came flying off a car going the other way, bounced over the median, and killed the driver. Horrible story that is preventable.

  • You could have been driving with a bad axel boot that finally stressed the bolts enough to shear.

That kind of heat/stress doesn't happen in 30 seconds.

  • I was cruising with a buddy in high school and this happened. His tire just came off, while we were going 55-60 on a not so busy road. Luckily it took a little while to completely brake away from the lugnuts, so there was some warning and enough time to slow ourselves and drive into a ditch.

I was driving for about 30 seconds. Pulled out of a parking lot and was doing a Michigan left.

10 year old car with about 77K miles on it.

Have a tire rotation, brake job, or anything else where they would have taken the wheel off done recently?

My mechanic/bump guy asked the same thing.

No - the only thing I did was change the front pads over two months ago.

  • it didn't happen all at once, most likely. you probably hit a pothole and broke one off, which stressed the others and another broke, and so on. it happens a lot, i see cars with missing lugs often.

doesn't hurt to take a walk around your car once a week. tires and wheels are kind of important. tires are a lot better than they used to be, but can still have problems. broken steel belts, sidewall bulges, missing lugs, bent rim, low tire pressure, bad alignment can all be seen early on.

Tightening the lugnuts too tight can result in sheering off the bolts. That's why I asked and likely why the mechanic asked too. Did you tighten by hand or torque wrench when you did it?

some of these shops are lazy and just use an impact gun and bang the lugs back on. most cars have a torque setting for lug nuts these days. you supposed to recheck the lugnuts a week after a wheel is installed because sometimes they work loose. if they get loose, the wheel bangs around on the lugs and they will eventually break.

hmmmm.....you may have something. I seem to recall hitting a pothole earlier in the week.

The car is a caddy sts - the lugnuts are visible (and have covers on them).

Hmm. Yeah that's the only thing I could think of in a car that isn't that old. 10 years is pretty old, but not "everything is rusting away and falling apart because of it" old. Many cars now come with a 6-7 year rust proof warranty. But if you did it by hand, it's less likely due to over or under tightening the lugs (unless you're super anal about tightening things and really put some extra elbow grease into it). Under tightening could be a possibility, but if you did it the proper way (alternating lugs when you tighten, not just one after the other) and you're not a woman, you probably did it correctly. Especially considering that you're technical enough to change pads, you probably know how to put a wheel on.

    Pothole is by guess.

Did you look the rim over after it came off? Generally, a pothole will fuck up the rim before shearing 5 lugs

Did you notice any unusual sounds since hitting the pothole? Since doing the pads?

btw...I checked Edmunds forums to see if there were any reports of STS sheared lugs...nothing
