Season ticket etiquette question

  • A Group of us are going in on a block of tickets... But with the new $100/seat fee the guy who has the seats in his name is charging us the extra $100/seat... But he gets the tax deduction for the donation, does he not? How should this be handled? Just pay up and tell him to buy beer for a week?

  • Not a huge tax break, enjoy the games.

He was the one who asked me... I told him I didn't care but he felt he was getting the extra benefit

  • I'd bring it up to him. Make sure he's taking the deduction, and ask for your fair share if he is.

    RasTrent

  • Unless he itemize his taxes, it don't matter. Don't be a bitch. Pay up move on

    Irritable_Bowel

  • Tell him to shove it up his ass. Also add that his wife is remarkably ugly and out of shape.

    Most grownups do.

Sparty is our mascot, we are Spartans.

  • I'd say it depends upon how many tickets we're talking about. If it's less than 10, the deduction is so minimal, there's no reason he should be the one paying the $100 for each ticket.

Or worse, why aren't the tickets in individuals names? Seems like a huge hassle down the line. I sit with 3 sets of friends (10 tickets total between us), but we all have our individual tickets in our own names.

  • Pay him $90 bucks if he's feeling guilty about it.

    ByTor20084

  • Pay him for the tickets with a check. Keep a record that $100 of that was a donation. Write it off on your own taxes. Just because the donation is in his name doesn't mean you wouldn't be able to write off your share. Really, him writing it off is illegal since he was paid back by you.

  • The tix are in his name, it's a tiny amount just buy the tix have fun and root Sparty on. Seriously, it's a little bitchy to even bring it up, something I would expect from my wife and the other neighborhood hussies when they are at book club....

  • You should get one hour of unlimited, anything goes time with his wife in a locked closet to even things out.

  • You can designate money to the Spartan Fund under anyone's name if you have the AD/ticket account number. Of course no one in the donation department would ever tell people that or for the hell of it have someone WORK on a Saturday on the weekend of the biggest donation day in MSU Sparty fund history. Sorry ass management in that department.

When we've known when the ticket payment was due for almost 3 months, is it really their fault you waited until the very last minute to look into it and ask your questions? (and/or make your payments?)

Did i say that I had questions? I was trying to GIVE them $1600 and I had no way of doing it. Do you pay your $5000 mortgage 90 days in advance? Back to basement junior.

Like I said, I didn't bring it up. He asked what we should do about it. I told him the same thing: I'm on tRCMB, so a couple hundred bones ain't gonna make no diff on my big cheddar taxez.... He didn't like the idea of getting our points and our tax deduction... It was a peculiar situation because I've always done my spartan fund thing on the side. So, I'm just gonna leverage some free beer out of it.

Just curious what would have made Saturday the biggest donation day in SF history?

  • Remember, the full $100 is not fully deductible. The University will tell him how much of it is, but I believe it is 80% of the $100 =$80 per ticket. If so, and if his incremental tax rate is 28% and he does not have an income that reduces the amount he is allowed to deduct, the deduction value is a whopping $22 per ticket. Not deductible from state taxes as a charity, but there may be a way of calling it a donation to a Michigan college. If so, only 4% so another $4.

So anywhere from $25-$30 tax savings MAX. Have him buy the first 2 rounds at the first tailgate and call it good!! And thank him for dealing with all the hassle

    buckeyesparty

  • Guess you could write that check for 86.37 but do you want to give up your spot in the block of tickets for less than $20 bucks?

Plus donations to MSU are no longer getting special consideration for MI income tax beginning in 2012.

Good point, after dealing with the ticket office he is still coming out behind.

The $100 for each ticket won't save him much on his taxes. The scholarship seating donations are 80% tax deductible, so he's really only getting an $80 deduction per seat. If you assume he's in the 25% tax bracket he'll actually save $20 in his taxes for each ticket. So just tell him to pay for your parking for a game or something like that and call it good.
