Aside from the yearly tornadoes, it seems like it's been a while since we've had a major tragedy in this country. I guess the last major event was the Discovery disaster in 2003. No major earthquakes, volcanoes, major airline crashes, or homeland terrorist events. I guess there was the BP oil spill and Steve Jobs.blackapple Am I missing anything?

100 people died in a nightclub fire in 2003. 49 died in an airline crash, comair flight 191 in 2006. 33 people died Virginia Tech 2007 13 people died in Bridge collapse 2007 50 people died on Colgan Air Flight 3407 in 2009 9 people died DC subway 2009 13 people died Fort Hood 2009 6 people died in 2011 Tuscon shooting

This isn't even counting all the people that died in mining accidents, floods, or tornadoes in that time frame which is a lot.

There is a difference between a disaster and some morons playing with guns and pyrotechnics.

I don't see anything you list here as disasters. Disasters are from natural causes, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, landslides, hurricanes, etc.

Anything that is man-made is not a disaster.

Are you really trying to say that there isn't weather damage equal to that on a yearly basis? If anything, it exposed how backwards everything is down there, but that was more of a product of the hype.

Mentioned the terrible tornadoes. But we get over 1,000 tornadoes a year in this country...not a unique disaster.

Wtf dude. So what qualifies as a disaster to YOU? Is there over/under on 100 dead? Jeebus.......bs_sign

According to the attached report by this MSU grad, from 19960-2006 droughts, floods, windstorms, slides, waves/surges, extreme temperatures and wild first killed on average 28,266 globally. Katrina killed 1,836 in one weekend. I would say that is pretty significant and not simply media event.

I didn't say they made anything up. However, the tornado outbreak last year left that same type of homelessness and damage, and they weren't talking about it for 6 months. I actually have less sympathy for the people of New Orleans, because they had been getting warnings for many years that, "New Orleans cannot withstand a direct hit from a hurricane." Plenty of time to relocate.

1,833 people died in Katrina. It caused $108B in damages (in 2008 dollars); the next closest hurricane is Andrew at $40B (in 2008 dollars). The 2011 tornado outbreak killed 359 people and caused $11B in damages (in 2011 dollars).

So, Katrina caused more than five times the number of deaths and about ten times the amount of damage.
