I don't think it was the questionable science that was the problem, it was his comments about what to give women for Valentine's day - in a professional journal of which he was the editor. He crossed a line. And don't feel bad for him, it's not as if he's lost his job.

Pretty sad in a country that claims to value free speech that a doctor who presents his findings is forced to resign b/c, "The College received numerous communications from the surgical community about the editorial." "Numerous communications" could be 4 people who complained. How long before we get to a point where a doctor has to conduct and on line poll to make sure all of his/her colleagues are okay with them performing a procedure.

He crossed the line? Give me a break.

Even all the weenie people from Ann Arbor are commenting that this is bullshit. He made a hilarious(non crude) joke that fell 100% in line with his findings. For a journal being published near valentines day, the only people taking offense to this are women who haven't been laid in quite some time.

Non crude? Hilarious? Findings? OK lol

Indeed, some folks seem to have got carried away, but there are certain standards people high up in academic and professional societies are held to. Your silly rant about women makes it clear that you're not really in a position to make an informed judgment.

  • That joke wasn't even crude, WTF? I think most women would even laugh at that. Wow maybe MSU should hire the guy to teach at our med-school.

  • They had a comments section at the end of the article and "Alan" gave the best answer in my opinion and one I totally agree with...

"The doctor quoted a respected SUNY study which found a strong correlation between depression and condom use. The study also found, among women who did not regularly use condoms, a correlation between depression and length of abstinence. Semen contains a variety of psychoactive hormones including testosterone, estrogen, and a variety of prostaglandins which are absorbed and can be detected in the bloodstream after sex. The result is not a big surprise. Maybe the doctor could have been a little more careful (the chocolates comment) but we all suffer when legitimate scientific study is subject to a political correctness test. How one extrapolates to the conclusion that the doctor is sexist is beyond me."

No, this one was far more informed:

"As a physician and medical educator at a major medical center, let me be clear, there is no excuse for this "editorial" (yes, I read the whole thing by following the link). Medical educators are required (in order to maintain accreditation) to teach "professionalism" to our physician trainees. The editorial is not consistent with that message. If the author of the editorial wanted to opine about human sexuality in academic or humorous ways, there were many other venues for him to do so. Instead, he used his professional stature in the field of surgery and an official publication of the American College of Surgeons for his thoughts on this topic. In doing so, he has promoted persistent sexist viewpoints that have damaged the practice of medicine, and, more acutely, the practice of surgery, for way too long. This was a serious error on the part of the author and the American College of Surgeons. A sad day for equality, indeed."

Well in my experiences with Doctors and even nurses is that a little humor can help the situation. Hell I was just in the delivery room with my wife last week and even the nurses and Dr. said it made their day because it was so calm and we were even joking with the guy who put in the epideral (yes I cannot spell the actuall title). He was an MSU grad and said that he would give us the Spartan Special, I was wearing an MSU hoodie and we got to talking about how we (me, my wife and him) graduated from MSU. And he joked that if it was a UM hoodie he may miss the spine a few times. Of course he was not being serious but humor goes a long way. Hell I had my wife laughing during and after labor. And even when we were leaving the hospital my wifes OB looked at me and joked that I would not be having sex for at least 6 weeks. I responded "with my wife!" insinuating that I would have sex with someone else, and the Dr who is a woman and my wife both laughed. I would rather have a Doctor with a little bedside humor than a robot.

    Except I disagree with that.

The surgeon has a duty to inform, and to especially inform those under him including other surgeons. I don't know how anything he said could be sexism or approaching offensive conduct, except for perhaps the joke about substituting in semen to replace chocolate. However, humor can be a good adjunct way of learning as well. This is information women should be aware of as well and it was a solid study.

To me, it shows the deep insecurity of women these days. For instance, if there was a study that found women tend to satisfy their men better if the men first perform cunnilingus on them, the women would be laughing and saying to their husbands, "See, that's why you are missing out."

In today's society, women overly strive to be independent and fight terms like "submissive", so for someone to suggest that women to be happier of they come in contact with male semen, once again put the happiness of the women at the responsibility of men and their semen. A cardinal sin in today's politically correct society. This is the reason women have a long battle to ever be considered equal in the eyes of society. They are too sensitive and regard many innocuous things as a put down or degrading in nature.

The science is clear on this topic, and although the message was cloudy and could have been better, it is clear than various hormones and bio-active elements enhance the well-being of females. Instead of embracing that, they are crying foul, and that they are responsible for their own happiness. The whole thing is really kind of stupid. They know he is a respected surgeon, they know the study on semen is legit, so why over react and take a position away from him. It's ludicrous.

Yeah, I agree. As you describe, there are certainly appropriate times and places for such attempts at humor.

Look, there are appropriate places to make that joke. His personal blog. Or maybe at the bar. Or maybe to his wife on Valentine's Day.

Not in an academic journal. The problem isn't the joke itself, it's the placement. Timing and setting are important to humor, and his was poor.
