Serious question about um and sugar bowl

  • Can any one put some figures or stats that show why they should go? And what needs to happen this weekend in the other championship games for them to go or get bumped to a non bcs game? I'll lock the thread once a decent answer shows up

  • They draw viewers. Only reasonable explanation.

And what needs to happen.... Bayou crushing Texas and either Clemson or Georgia winning.

  • michigan will go (if they get in the top 14) because they are the biggest national draw. They will bring bodies to the game, and viewers to the TV.

  • So I go up to my walverine boss and say "so do you think Michigan will sneak into a BCS bowl"? Typical walvie delusion he says, " what do you mean, were already in dog" uhoh. He also said, "We should be playing in the B1G ten championship if we didn't lose to Iowa" uhoh I proceeded to tell him he was wrong and explained why. His response, " think about what your saying, We would only have one conference loss and you would lose the tie breaker to Nebraska, who we beat". [walverines]uhoh lol Fucking Walverines they're everywhere.

Valenti brought up a point for once that I actually agree with. He compared UM to the Yankees, in that a lot of people love them, and a lot of people hate them, and like to watch them just to root against them. Judging from the posts from this board, I would say that is spot on.

Plus, you do realize Walmart is a national chain right?

  • * Big Ten = big money
    * Eligible team = second BCS game
    * Michigan = best chance to be eligible

The bs about fans traveling is a bigger deal to the local hospitality business.

The bowl people know that unsold tickets will paid for by the school who doesn't sell their allotment if the public doesn't buy them. The school flies eveyone and their dog to the game and the rest of the $17M payout (average BCS) gets divided 12 ways.

Kinda right but wrong on few things.

    1. Eyeballs in front of the tube very important
    2. Asses in seats are important to the Chamber of Commerce (and to the schools - they don't want to eat the tickets that are committed to buy).
    3. Big Ten doesn't get $17 million for second BCS team - it's $6 million.
    4. Big Ten pools all bowl payouts and splits it 13 ways (the league office gets equal share).
    5. Big Ten gives each school a travel/expense allowance based on the bowl. Last year's numbers included $2.2 million that Wisconsin was given for the Rose Bowl to Ohio State's $2 million for the Sugar and $1.75million for each of the three teams in the Florida bowls on Near Year's Day

If those three happen, Michigan will finish 14th. If one of them doesn't happen, the odds aren't in their favor. If two don't happen, they can probably kiss those BCS hopes goodbye."

"Where we sit right now, I'd give Michigan a less than 50% chance of getting into the top 14. They need a few things to go their way on Saturday. I'm guessing they'll be in Outback if not in the BCS."

You seem to know a lot about this...if Baylor beats UT and we lose to Wisconsin, any chance we sneak into a BCS game?

I don't agree with Edwards' assessment at all. First of all, the loser of the btccg will fall below Michigan, regardless who it is. And there are several other teams in the top 14 that are playing this week, that if they lose they too will also fall out of the top 14. Granted those would be upsets, but they can still happen.

Personally I would say about a 75% chance they get in.

  • Margin of victory in the LSU-Gerogia, Baylor-Texas, OSU-OKLA, and B1G title game will decide how voters rank the teams. Style points are important at this point.

No one knows for sure what will happen with the polls. The assumption (fair or unfair) is that if we lose, 10-2 michigan will jump 10-3 us in both the haiss and coaches poll, which would vault them into the top 14 of the bcs. Voters could look at the season and think "hmmm wait msu beat michigan, we shouldn't jump michigan up ahead of them" but that seems unlikely at best.

I don't see how you're coming to this conclusion. Let's say that LSU beats Georgia, and Baylor beats Texas. More than likely, Baylor and Georgia swap spots or very close to it, putting Baylor at #13 as they vault UM, Wisconsin and Georgia. Michigan would get ahead of Wisky and (most likely) Georgia, but if Baylor beats Texas, there's no way that Baylor doesn't leapfrog UM. Oklahoma losing to OSU wouldn't drop them far enough.

As long as Southern Miss, UCLA or Iowa State doesn't pull anything magical out of their asses
Michigan is going to end up #15 at-best in the BCS.

I don't believe that Baylor(9-3 with a win) will jump michigan(10-2). They are really going to have to convince voters. They are 200 points behind in the coaches poll and like 350 in the Harris poll. Maybe they will, but I just don't see it unless they crush texas. Not often teams with a 9-3 record jump a 10-2 team.

Fair enough. I guess this is where I should be apologizing for having an opinion and posting it on a message board that encourages participation.

Just looking up on this page, you are asking tJYD's opinion on the matter. I am wondering about the level of his professional analysis. You seem to waver on your own rules. Not to mention his postings over the last few weeks have been attacked by the general masses. (sorry, tJYD!)

I am not rooting for the scenario to happen, but I think it will. Just my 2 cents. Take it (or leave it, in your case) as you will.

I think most people would do that. If they (BU) beat Texas by at least 10 points especially, that'd give them five straight wins. They'd also have much better wins than UM. Who is UM's best win, Nebraska? Baylor's wins over Oklahoma and TCU are more impressive and overall they played a MUCH tougher schedule. I think Baylor sneaks in over UM and if they beat Texas badly, its even more likely that this happens.

I hope you are right, but I don't see voters putting 9-3 over 10-2.

That doesn't matter though. The computers could more than make up for the fact that Baylor is still behind um in the human polls.

They can't go to a BCS Bowl unless they are in the top 14. If Wisconsin wins, they are definitely out. If MSU wins, they will probably be in the top 14 and eligible.
