Seriously, what is the appeal of hunting in 2012?

I like fishing for the sport; I'm a catch-and-release guy.

I'll be honest, I always thought ice fishing looked like a blast, mostly from my experiences watching Grumpy Old Men.

    Who the hell eats bear?

That's a new one to me. What does it taste like?

My bear-hunting uncles do. I've never had it before- or shot anything because I'm a huge pansy and hire others to cage them up and force feed them and slit their throats. I just can't pull the trigger.

Population control? You want population control, kill humans who are stupid. Over 90 percent of wildlife that has existed since the beginning of time...IS EXTINCT. That is a lame duck argument (pun intended).

I like a nice steak just as much as the next guy, but I have never hunted and have never killed an animal. Never cared for it.

Humans are apex predators (if you want to argue that we're omnivores and therefore can't be, grizzly bears are also apex predators). Our role in the food chain is crucial to maintaining the health of the ecosystem. We didn't understand that until only recently, so we made some mistakes. However, we are actively working to fix those mistakes, while maintaining our role in keeping the populations of large herbivores small enough so they don't strip the ecosystem of plant resources and everything starts to starve to death.

Yea, I guess I'm a hypocrite in that regard.

I'm not condemning hunting as a means to eat. I just don't understand the appeal of killing something so massively beautiful for a photo op.

Have you ever tried to catch-and-release a bear? That's pretty sporty, too.

I have always been under the impression that men fish so they can drink, say nothing, and stay away from their wives for hours on end.

    What's wrong with that?

My point is there are a lot of reasons why people do things like hunt...why do we need to understand every one?

Neither would I, if they didn't use it. I'll bet they shot 7,000 pounds of food and carried 200 back to the wagon.

God that always pissed me off. There'd probably be less dysentery if there was not thousands of pounds of rotting animal carcasses lying everywhere and polluting the water.

Remind yourself. Nobody built like you, you design yourself.

  • I hunt and fish and enjoy it more and more everytime I get out. I hunt, birds, turkey, deer, fish for just about every species we have in MI, I do not hunt for trophys animals, I don't see the appeal but if someone else wants to go kill some massive animal that is their right to do so, if they buy the permit that is. Some of my favorite hunts and most memorable are not shooting or killing anything. Just being out and watching the birds or seeing deer run around and play.
To me being out on the water or in the woods is kind of like going to church. It's the one place I can go and be alone and not worry about all the bullshit in the world, just focus on the task and enjoy mother nature and everything she offers us.
So that is the appeal to me

  • Why would anyone drive an hour and a half to sit in a crowded stadium like sardines to watch 19 year old kids they dont know play a game for 3.5 hours and then drive back home for an hour and a half.

Why would anyone spend 5 hours hitting a little white ball into a hole 400 yards away?

Why would anyone watch car races? (Ok-that one is idiotic)

Kill bear. Take picture of bear. Family eats bear over the next year. Turn hide into rug.

I don't have a problem with hunting, but please don't pretend like the average bear hunter is filling up their freezer with meat.

The few meals someone might have from a hunted bear are mostly just to say they did it. Bear meat is definitely an "acquired taste" and not something your average family is slapping on the grill a few times a week.

People in North America in 2012 hunt animals like bears for sport, not for food. It is a photo op and a trophy to display in the hunting cabin. Arguing that people hunt animals like bears for their meat is ridiculous.

  • To change the OP's original question, I would ask "why do you golf"? Is it a challenge? Can it be comptetitive? The same answers can apply to hunting. Why do people climb mountains? Why do they have to progressively climb higher mountains to the point that they kill themselves on Kilamajaro? Must be some thrill in it for them.

I subscribe to catch-and-release "sometimes" depending what I am fishing for. If it is salmon, I might keep one or two to eat and release the rest. Steelhead, never since I want to see the population increase. I Never keep a fish that is spawing in the river. Walleye and perch are gonna end up on my plate.

I used to hunt deer avidly but lost the "thrill of the hunt" but that doesn't mean that I have a problem with anyone who still has the thrill. And yes, hunters do play an avid part in population control. After this non-existent Winter, I would suggest everyone check their collision coverage on their car, cause the deer population is gonna explode and the deer will be flying like pinballs.

If I want the thrill of the hunt, I will go play paintball. At least the other team is trying to shoot back rather than eating bushes.

Yeah, now that people are eating each other this is a fair comparison.

    Excellent points.

Personal examples, I remember seeing my first wild turkey, now seeing them is no big deal. I remember seeing a coyote for the first time. While they are skittish and remain hidden, evidence of their presence is everywhere.

My grandfather talks of seeing a deer for the first time as a young teen. This was before management practices were installed.

  • Hunting is a way to control animal population.

For example bear licenses are done by lottery and this guy got the bear with a compound bow.
He had to be close. He misses and the bear just gets angry. If we don't hunt bear we see even more walking around.

Right now we need to hunt and kill every ferral hog in the state and probably the country.

If we don't hunt deer we kill them with our cars and trucks. (plus I like venison)

  • "We have a terrific show for you today: we're gonna kill some elk, and we're gonna kill some mountain goats. Now, the new law passed by Colorado legislature, which Ned and I call 'Pussy Law #4', states that we can no longer kill animals in defense. In other words, our old line of 'It's comin' right for us' no longer works. So now, we only kill animals to, quote, thin out their numbers. If we don't hunt, then these animals will grow too big in number and they won't have enough food. So you see, we have to kill animals, or else they'll die." biggrin

But kill a bear for a trophy pic?

Unless you're going to filet or grill it, that's a waste of an impressive animal.

I actually don't disagree when it comes to hunting a bear. They shoot them from 1000+ meters with high powered rifles. Too damn easy. Make it hand to hand combat only.

But hunting in general? No issues with it. I wish deer and turkey season was longer

Maybe I'm a stereotypical liberal, but when I saw this recent photo of James Vandenberg, I lost a little respect for him. I find hunting for sport to be a little despicable.

When we run out of wild game to hunt we are going to hunt liberals next. thumbsup
