Seriously, what is the appeal of hunting in 2012?

  • Spartan Grunt said...

That is obviously not what I meant. Of course all things are not "good" if, and only if, they derive pure enjoyment (e.g. a psychopath enjoys murder). Hunting, for me, is the totality of the experience outdoors, the thrill of the hunt, the time spent with friends, the bond between my dog and I, the taste of the game, seeing the enjoyment my dog gets from it, etc. The act of hunting, holistically, is something we are meant to enjoy. I suppose the same could be said about sex. It has a very natural intent, obviously this intent is also coupled with a gift of pleasure.

No kidding. I like fishing inland streams for trout in part because I like being on the river so much.

FYI training on wild birds and running your dog on public land opens back up July 8 not August 15. I think last year it was July 15. I think that August 15th date is when the preserves can open back up

    Dog Training

You may train dogs on wild animals only from July 8 through April 15. Exception: Michigan residents may train dogs on fox on state lands in Zone 3 under special permit. See the 2011 Michigan Bear Hunting Digest for dog/bear training restrictions.

Has this recently changed to July? Plus on the State Land by my house it would be really hard to enforce, people take their dogs for walks in the middle of Gun Dear season. My problem would be the E Collar and that he is a Beagle. Even though people walk their labs without a leash and it is somehow legal. I understand the point, that they don't want my Beagle killing young Bunnies or Pheasant, I just don't know how they allow some dogs without leashed and others without.

Since I've had my bird dog about 6 years it's been from April 15 to somewhere around mid July. I'm pretty sure it is meant for all dogs not just working dogs. Most people don't know these rules, I was acutally surprised about it when someone told me about the quiet time hours. I guess if you have your dog on a leash it might be ok but it would be a waste of my time and my dogs to go out there on a leash, plus my mutt is affected by the heat really bad so we stay out of these areas until late summer or early september when it's not so hot out, but this really puts the training on hard core for the fall season since I only have a couple weeks to polish the dog on commands after being a couch potato all summer
For the people out there during deer season they are nuts and have no clue, I stay away from running my dogs in these areas as soon as Bow season opens, not only for the safety of my dog but to be respectful of the hunters out there. I know I don't want some crazy bird dog like mine any where near me while I'm hunting deer

There's a lot of wild pig running around out there in Texas and Arkansas etc..if it weren't for the Red Blood 'Mericans running and flying around hunting them..there'd be serious problems.

An instance of population control, damn right..

Yep, huge problem down south and there is a localized pocket here in VA but the state has not yet allowed for open season(there is no designation as of yet in VA for a feral hog, they are all swine)...As soon as they do I am going to do my part and lay some smack down on some pigs.

Population control? You want population control, kill humans who are stupid. Over 90 percent of wildlife that has existed since the beginning of time...IS EXTINCT. That is a lame duck argument (pun intended).

I like a nice steak just as much as the next guy, but I have never hunted and have never killed an animal. Never cared for it.

More deer curerently exist now since record keeping began. They are becoming a nuisance. Hunting is a very controlled and regulated sport. State wildlife agencies controll constantly review population trends and control the amount of animals killed by hunters I am an active bird/wing shooter and enjo the sport very much.

  • If you have the ability to genocide what are apparently brilliantly smart invasive feral pigs that have so far been able to evade the aforementioned genocide while causing plenty of health and economic damage, more power to you.

If the general hunting populace turned their attention towards exterminating the feral pig population, they'd be doing the rest of Michigan a solid.

I think Nike is missing out by not making some blaze orange Spartan gear and some digital camo gear, because Michigan is full of outdoorsmen. theSpartan needs to let Nike know. I would buy some if they made it.

Adidas made some blaze orange and camo stuff when they had the NFL contract and I have an orange Lions hat. They also made some SCu-m gear too.

Just please don't wear it at a football game. It sends me into a focking tirade when I see people dressed in orange in Spartan Stadium. I get the "pink" thing, sort of (save the boobies is a good cause) but the orange is just headslap
