Shaw Hall as a Freshman

  • Cosmo_Kramer said...

Nope. It had a cool-sounding name. They gave you plastic bags to stuff all your food into. It's really bothering me that I can't recall.

You talking about the snack shop in the basement? It was called The Shawloon when I was there.

Yessir. Great place. Plus they had pizza and Slurpees.

The kid will make new friends. Maybe even some who are old enough to buy bee!

MrsBee says there is no charge, and no age limit. Anyone willing to take him, can have him.

Shaw Cafeteria is pretty money, as I recall.

WRONG!!! I lived there for 2 years and it was definitely one of the worst on campus. Plus it's impossible to get a table there at lunch since everyone goes there...

Other than that, I liked it there. I was an RA there both my years and it's a good, older crowd who knows people outside the dorms or is old enough to hit the bars. In fact it was so old that I had a guy on my floor that was 41... Really enjoyed my time there.

There was no age minimum for buying bee when I was an undergrad. Michigan is really cracking down on the simple pleasures in life.

    I think that is it. I couldn't remember either...and I lived there!

The personal pan pizzas were money.

I recall the good ol' days of TTO. I'm pretty sure I had two hot dogs and an Icee every day for, like, a month.

  • Anyone know if the Shaw Hall River Run still exists, or has it gone the way of the Dino Dash*?

(*Note: I know the Dino Dash still exists; I just like the way it looked when I wrote my question.)

  • Was in the Broad Freshman Program my Freshman year and it was an amazing experience. All freshman business students and easy to make friends. Your kid would know if he was in cause he would have had to apply however. Also the program has moved to mcdonell so it is no longer in shaw.

Like somone else mentioned shaw caf is being renovated but bus pass and double take out per day is awesome and well worth it. Knew some normal people who were freshman in Shaw and had a great time. It's better to be away from friends from highschool and visit them whenever you want.

I thought Shaw was only for sophomores and above...?

There was a floor for business freshmen made after T-Dub (Shaw West Terrace) got into too much trouble too often.

Also, I thought Shaw was Red Cedar Zone, lumped in with Mason-Abbot and Snyder-Phillips?

and a community john kinda sucks.

You mean a community john that is cleaned, disinfected and stocked everyday?... Not cleaning your own john that you shared with a suitemate doesnt suck. My friends bathrooms were always disgusting.
    Lived in Shaw. GREAT locale..

  • I was in Shaw as a freshman, but that was more than 20 years ago. Probably 75% Engineering majors, with a pretty wide range among everyone else (myself included).

They made a big change the year before I arrived, and really cut down on the upper classmen. I think it was too wild. For example, on my floor the year before I arrived they had a party with the keg sitting in front of the RA's door (even when we had an RA and a GA on our side for a progressive, even they had to keep it quiet and closed doors with secret knocks). Anyway, on my floor, there were 2 freshmen the year before I arrived. My freshman year there were about 20 (about half of our section). That was pretty standard throughout Shaw that year and for the next few years at least. But maybe they went back to being more of the upperclassmen dorm after they did that big remodeling with hot tubs and everything 10 or so years ago that was even written about in Newsweek.

What do people say? Kid just got assigned to the River Trail neighberhood, I assume McDonell is out so it looks like Shaw. I always liked that dorm, never lived there, all the kid's friends are over in South Complex, so there is a bit of disappointment.

I wouldn't rule McDonnell out, I knew quite a few people that ended up there as freshmen. If your kid is Asian, it's pretty safe to assume he/she will be living there.

Also, the Broad program for freshman is now in McDonnell.

  • I was on TW for my freshman and sophomore years (mid-80s -- yeah, I'm old) and it was a blast. Keg every Thursday, our RA made it a point to study at his girlfriend's on Thursday nights. Pull the car up in the bus zone and roll the keg across the grass, right through the window that was even with the ground.

Spring term, all the hotties are out sunbathing by the river, and being on terrace level you can just climb out the window when you want to go outside.

    Central location is good, too.

  • McDonel is home to the Broad freshman program and will also have the new engagement center open in the fall. Suite style bathrooms are in McDonel too and is directly across the street from the IM.

Wow, how did I forget about the hot tubs? Everyone always joked about how filthy they must have been and no one I knew ever used them. In reality, they were probably clean and never used because of everyone expecting the worst.
