Size comparison between new Spartan Stadium scoreboards and old

  • Fistula said...

Not to be a negative nancy, but what's the point of the bigscreens? When the play is happening, I'm watching the field, not the TV. And when it comes to good replays that you'd want to see (a questionable call by an official, a personal foul, the instant replay being reviewed upstairs), they never show these to the home crowd anyway. I've always supposed they don't want to get the crowd too riled up or something. Either way, the big TV's seem like they'd only be great for concerts or graduations.

If you're going to sustain a good program, you at least need to be in the 21st century with scoreboards and such. Recruits and fans walk into a stadium and those aesthetics play a major part in establishing it as a big game environment. If there are no improvements to the stadium as part of this recent success, it reinforces the notion that we don't care. It's almost as symbolic as it is functional.

The old screen was like going to a Super Bowl party and finding out your buddy was going to put the game on an old CRT TV. no

  • I was in Columbia, SC this week. Here's some recon of their USC's new scoreboard. Actually didn't even know they were getting one. Pretty early with just the supports up, but took a picture anyway.

It will be 36 x 124 or 4,464 square feet and cost $6.5 million.

Dang they have a purty stadium.

  • With all the added curb appeal from the new scoreboards coming up and the proposed north end plaza does anyone think graduations maybe changed to spartan stadium instead of the Breslin in the future. I don't see why not and all commencement could be together since I know right now they are split between Breslin, auditorium and wharton center depending on majors. I'm graduating in 2014 and It would be cool to have my commencement at spartan stadium.

I believe that the last commencement held in Spartan Stadium was in 1995 with President Clinton. I also believe that President Truman spoke at the 1960 commencement exercises in Spartan Stadium. Does anyone know if their have been more commencements in Spartan Stadium? I was recently at Notre Dame and they hold two commencement ceremonies. One is for graduate students and the other is for undergraduate students. Both are held in their football stadium on different days. I do not know what their poor weather plan is, however. I am curious what plan B is for them. They read the names of every graduate at their respective (2) graduation ceremonies (graduate/undergraduate). What I don't know is if they did the same at MSU (read all names) in 1960 and 1995 or if separate commencement ceremonies for individual colleges took place before/after the convocation at the stadium, which is what MSU does now (only at Breslin) I would be curious if anyone knows the answer to that, as well. It would have to take a heck of a long time to read the names of 10,000+/- names. In comparison, Notre Dame would only have 2,500+/- names to read split between to ceremonies. Not to change the topic of this thread....

It's pretty bland imo and in a horrible location off campus, across the street from a farmers market.

This is the proposed conceptual rendering of the USC video board... I've been watching the progress of this online, as well.

We were in Spartan Stadium in 1968 for commencement. I believe the Stadium was used during my 4 years for Spring commencement. I don't remember if our names were announced; but everyone walked up to the podium to get a rolled up piece of paper that told us when we would actually get our diploma.

John Hannah shook hands with all of us; wished us well; and said to send MSU money from our well paying jobs!

  • FWIW - I drove by the stadium today and there was no real noticeable progress to the boards on the north side. The south side does not have structure yet, but I suspect they'll get going here very soon.

  • Just took a drive around the north end yesterday. Mother of God, those things are beautiful! Can not wait to see those during a game.

Actually it's across the street from the state fair grounds. Ample parking through.

SC is seriously lacking in campus appeal. Seemed like a giant community college to me. Stadium is pretty cool though.

This is strange for me to hear, though I have never been so I am not challenging your opinion at all.

I had a buddy go to SC and both his parents were IU grads. They raved about how pretty SC's campus was, and given how beautiful Bloomington is, I figured they had a pretty good grasp on what makes a nice college campus. Hopefully I can get down and see for myself at some point.
