Size comparison between new Spartan Stadium scoreboards and old

  • Is anyone else beginning to wonder how this (small boards, large board, and LED ribbon) is going to be completed in time for our first game? In May, I didn't think there'd be an issue, but without knowing anything about construction, it sure seems like they have a lot of work to do.....

You realize they have two entire months to go, right? And also, the video boards are probably already under constructions. Once the frames are done they just have to be installed.

It looks about half done. And about half the time they had to start with is gone.

If you've ever had to move a facility (an office, a business, all the phone lines, computer network lines, switches, cooling equipment, etc.) like I've had to watch..you'd be nervous.

I can only imagine how many wires and such have to be strung up inside those towers, one of which isn't even complete. I'm pretty curious to see how the Heck they're gonna pull this off, too.

Hell, just TESTING everything and working out bugs seems like a monumental feat to me. But I trust these guys are pros and will get it done. I hope juggle

I think you would be amazed at how fast these things can come together. The biggest hurdle is the footing and re-bar. Once that's done, its essentially putting together the frame. The video boards themselves will probably be in modular components that can be plugged in in an array and calibrated in a week or so. Since it's a complete system, the Audio and Visual components will probably be installed at the same time. It will be interesting to see how they handle the installation of the ribbon, and if anything isn't done in time for the home opener, that's what my money would be on.

My guess is the wiring and data transmittal is one gigantic conduit. Don't be shocked if you see someone mounting a 12" (or larger) PVC pipe to the side of the stadium.

They also might be tying in to the existing conduit that was used for the old board.

It might be fooking sensory overload to walk into the stadium and see everthing completed anyway! whoa As it is, the poor Band is gonna have trouble getting any attention whatsoever (unless they show the video and blast the sound from them on the boards..hey now..!

As an aside, I won't be suprised if the team is given some exposure and practice sessions while a bunch of distractions via sound and video is going on. They are gonna have to get used to all the sights and sounds. I can just imagine the focus of Boise's guys..poor Bastards..

    Nope.

Most of the stuff going on right now (structures being erected) is the long, time-consuming part. Adding in the screens and the exterior should be a breeze relative to this. It's like when they build rides at Cedar Point. The supports and laying the track are the time-consuming parts of it but then you see the station pop up in the last week or two. I think that's what it'll be like here. I would guess the screens and exterior will be put up as late as mid-August.

I see no reason for concern yet as it is still June.

Obviously there is an arms race going on here. Every stadium, college or pro, wants the best video board, or at least something competitive.

Question: Are these screens all unique? Are they all custom designed and built, or are there "models" sold to multiple stadium customers?

I agree. I see no reason for concern, as I think Mark Hollis and MSU can pull off big stage events. Frankly, Wharton Center has been modified to pull off more events on stage that no one else can, and it's a leading showplace in Michigan.

Still, I wonder if the large screen at Spartan Stadium is meeting the stadium arms race. Not that I think it needs to, just wondering.

Meeting the stadium arms race? The Main board will be the largest video display unit in the state, regardless of level. That includes the new board at Comerica Park, The boards at the Big House, et al. If anything, Spartan Stadium is setting the standard in the Mid-West with its proposed and under construction audio/visual display systems. Not sure where your concern or wonder lies, but I can assure you it is most likely misplaced.

More seats are NOT part of the arms race. You don't need a giant stadium if the amenities are great. Do you think Autzen is losing the arms race because they only have a 56k seating capacity?

Capacity is always important because those seats fund a big chunk of the athletic department.

As for Oregon prior to Phil Knight's numerous investments into the university, the Ducks were really a football nobody and their smallish stadium was one of the factors. Since Knight is getting up there at age 74, it will be interesting to see if Oregon can sustain itself in a post-Knight world.

He and Nike have certainly helped make them have good facilities and appear cool recently, but I wonder if that can continue.

do you not think Knight has some gigantic trust set up for Oregon when he kicks it?

Besides, I think 82-85k is the max the fanbase would support based on geographic relation and general malaise alone. So its not like we have much room to go.

4 years of saying "THERE I AM, I'M THE ONE IN WHITE" when they scan over the student section, and now if some student makes that joke, you probably WILL be able to find them as every single student will be discernible on our hugeassatron.

    beg to differ.

More seats mean more money for the Athletic Dept and money rules. Wish we would have seriously thought about expanding to 80 or 85 K. Doesn't look like that is going to happen any time soon with the new board configuration. Oh well. At least we'll be getting new locker rooms and media center at the north end (hopefully next year). Locker rooms ARE an important part of selling the program to recruits.

  • 75k are not filled on a regular basis. Makes no sense to expand right now, plain and simple. If/when those seats do not get sold, that is not more money coming into the athletics department just money spent for construction, which will take a LONG time to pay off when you only sell tickets to fill them for maybe 2 games per year on average.

It's not more money to the athletic department if those seats sit empty 5 of the 7 Saturdays a year.
