I wonder if these boards will have any impact on the stadium crowd noise? That monster board in the south is HUGE. I have think it will do something to the crowd sound?

This set up is going to kick ass. I really can't wait to see it under the lights.

Upgrades to the sound systems and the fact that the band can be mic'ed will probably help coordinate music and cheers throuout the whole stadium better.

  • This will make SS even more intimidating.

It is already a large and loud stadium.

They haven't lost in SS in over two years if my memory serves. This should help the home field advantage.

    At times SS is electric.

Like when they beat ND in OT in 10 and UM in OT in 09.

If they can bring it strong against some of these visiting schools like OSU, Nebraska, and ND it is going to be a special season.

exactly, and the 10' video board is the same size as the old message board/scoreboards, so the view is exactly intact as it was.

The video board ribbon going all the way across eliminates the "view" for more people in the stands...there will still be sections of the stands high above that have a "view".

A view of what, I'm not so sure. Tree tops and the top of beaumont tower?

It's not like there's anything majestic back there to promote.

right, he was listing off games where 'at times SS is electric.' He forgot the loudest I have ever heard that place.

    You're calling campus unremarkable? Thanks.

Then again, I kinda do know.

Recruits rather see flashy new uniforms then learn about the past. 17-18 years old, you don't care about any of that.

You can display the 1958 title, along with the two titles they won this decade. WTF kinda logic is that?

Maybe we could put up a picture of the last MSU National Champions to play at Spartan Stadium.

  • To get the discussion going again...

Ianni mentioned that they were hoping to have a feature like at the U2 concert that has "unlike any other stadium has" (of course referring to the retractable rise and lower of a video board between the two north scoreboards.

Do you guys think it is possible this is still planned and they are keeping this under wraps until the season starts (seeing how the budget increased from 8M to 10M but without any real changes in design)?

I don't think the Video wall has ever not been discussed. Pretty sure it's a base bid installation.

Doubtful. I think they were throwing around the idea of the expanding ribbon board like the U2 video wall, but ultimately just decided on a large stationary LED wall instead. At least this is why I took from the whole situation.

Having recently graduated and sat in the upper deck on the west side a few times, the view of campus over the stadium to the north is quite good. Trees and Beaumont sum up the campus pretty nicely.

I thought I had heard the score boards would be implemented into two phases, the first being the monster board in the south and the LED ribbon and two scoreboards in the north. I understand the second phase was going to be the aforementioned "unlike any other stadium" feature.

At the time of the release, they were saying the score boards would be ready for the 2012 season and the second phase would be implemented for the 2013 season depending on (1) funding and (2) feasibility. It may have already been decided the concept was not feasible and the money would be better spent elsewhere.

Considering the current North Side concept of the 10' LED ribbon and two scoreboards is already awesome, I am inclined to think they may not proceed with the added features (diminishing returns?). I'd rather have any money put into completing the total stadium vision (which is freaking unreal). This is pure speculation on my part.

There is certainly a chance I could be wrong, from everything I read, I took it that the LED ribbon was going to be the moving wall structure. I don't recall hearing anything about 2 phases, just that the boards would be operational by this season, but not necessarily completely finished construction-wise.

Yeah, they said they were in potential development of something like a moving LED wall, in which case that would get developed later. But because we are having a solid wall going in this off-season, I think we are supposed to assume that this was deemed not feasible and the idea was scraped (probably with good reason, this will be good enough).

I think the university wanted to keep the south board up through saturday (spring game) then take it down. How soon after the spring game it'll come down I have no idea.

No progress has made on the south side. On the north, nothing new either. The old north scoreboard is completely gone, but there is no sign of anything new replacing it. My assumption is that they will start work after the spring game on both sides.

  • I am planning on snapping several photos of the current state of the scoreboards at the G&W game. I say we all take photos and potentially get some different angles of the lack of scoreboardage.
