Smoke around Bill Self....

  • I haven't heard many shady "Dollar Bill" stories, but I do remember hearing about how Sasha Kaun asked what "his job would be" on his official visit when he came to State, and how that was the end of that. He of course ended up at KU with Self.

    So tell me people, what is the dirt on Dollar Bill.

    What a shitty thread. OP implies people are looking at Self, then says he hasn't heard any stories on him, but he heard that a former Kansas player said something iffy at State, so he must be dirty. Of course, no link.

    My buddy at work, who is a big college hoops fan, believes that basically every top program in the country, except maybe Duke is dirty. He's a die-hard 'Cuse fan and assumes that they are dirty. His basic theory is that any school that is in the middle of nowhere and yet is pulling in 5* recruits from all over the country has something dirty going on.

    I don't really know as I agree with him. I think there are some programs that are perpetually dirty, or flirting with being dirty (UK, UNLV, UCLA, etc), and there are definitely some coaches that seem to skirt or openly defy the rules. But I also think that if I were a super talented prep player and I had the chance to go play for a legendary program like UNC, I wouldn't need much coaxing.

    I worked with a guy who went to KU when Wilt was there. He was a senior when Chamberlain was listed as a junior (Wilt left KU a year early) and had a job in the field house. Wilt was listed on the schedule and Bill saw him once that year.

    Bill said there were plenty of times KU coaches were driving to Kansas City to retrieve Wilt. The team had a set of rules, Chamberlain had a different set.

Look up, see all those banners? You can add more. Basketball is king here, and you will be a God on campus. Here's our track-record of NBA players and titles.

    Anyone that doesn't think that's an easy sell is crazy. Programs like Kansas don't need 'smoke'.

    Except there have been rumors for years about parents of Duke recruits suddenly getting nice jobs in Raleigh-Durham once their kids commit to Coach K (Boozer and Duhon, notably).

  • I know some MAC assistant coaches.

    According to them the Big Ten has been a clean conference ever since Bill Self left for Kansas. Someone else who I know works in an AD dept has told me the same thing. In the Big East and SEC its more of guessing who isn't dirty.

    I always start wondering when an East Coast player goes to USC or UCLA or when KU, UK or some East coast school signs a player from SoCal.

  • Self has made a living off of recruiting Chicago while he was at Illinois and still does at Kansas. The guy knows how to play with slime and dirt in Chicago recruiting.

    yup..the funny thing is that I was hearing some recruiting experts say that Kansas is the dark horse for Jabari Parker.
