Smoke around Bill Self....

    Uhhhh....Julian Wright. Sherron Collins.

Do they share the same parents as Parker? No

    This years KU roster? No

Self loads up on players from coast to coast. This year's team has 2 players from Hurley's St Anthony's in NJ, 2 from Brewster Academy in NH and 3 CA players

I got the impression you were using his current roster to try and prove that Self doesn't recruit Chicago.

I don't really know as I agree with him. I think there are some programs that are perpetually dirty, or flirting with being dirty (UK, UNLV, UCLA, etc), and there are definitely some coaches that seem to skirt or openly defy the rules. But I also think that if I were a super talented prep player and I had the chance to go play for a legendary program like UNC, I wouldn't need much coaxing.

I have doubts that UNLV is dirty. They are decent team in the Mountain West, but if they were continuously dirty, as in the last 15 years, they would be doing a lot more than they have. I think the major downturn the PACXII has had is what has risen the UNLV, SDSU and New Mexico programs.

Why does the RCMB seem to think every other high end program must be dirty?

As someone else in here has mentioned, Kansas hired Mario Chalmers father, Ronnie, to be on staff during the three years Mario played. It may not be "dirty" but hiring family members to be on staff to give the school a leg up in recruiting is definitely not clean.

If Parker doesn't go to MSU my bets are on Duke or UNC.

As far as Self recruiting Chicago? The only player on the KU roster from Chicago is Jamari Traylor and he finished his HS career at IMG Academy that's near Bradenton FL.

Parker's a really unique case. Could go totally off the board to someplace like DePaul or BYU. He's a lock top 5 pick no matter where he goes. Just depends on where he's comfortable.

    Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.

  • Most coaches are only as dirty as the AAU coaches they deal with...

If you refuse to deal with the super shady AAU coaches, then you get a better rep.

But if you are in super freaking tight with guys like the Pump brothers, then its the whole "There is smoke, does that mean fire?" routine. Guilty by association? Maybe...

Whats the old saying... When Charles Robinson and Yahoo! Sports do a story on you, its probably not a good thing....

What a shitty thread. OP implies people are looking at Self, then says he hasn't heard any stories on him, but he heard that a former Kansas player said something iffy at State, so he must be dirty. Of course, no link.

It wouldn't surprise me if Parker sticks around for a degree either, especially if he goes to BYU. He is such a different case than anyone coming out of high school in the last few decades.

I think most here would agree that Duke and UNC play it straight.

No. I'm sure he does but Chicago is rife with street agents. Looking at his current roster Self had more success with a player pulled from Chicago to finish HS at IMG.

Every Top 30 program recruits Chicago. Self had a lot more success selling Champaign-Urbana than Lawrence but then the recruiting budget in Lawrence is much larger too.

The Mormon church will want him to go pro as soon as possible so that he can start his huge tithing. NTTAWWT. They have a very large stake in this young man. The church has a very healthy respect for money.

True, can you imagine the Mormon Church sitting in their secret rooms in their secret garbs discussing some 17 year old mormon from the south side of Chicago playing basketball with the hope that he will assume the responsibility to donate large sums of money back to the church.

Im actually optimistic about getting Parker because he is a mormon. I know im totally sterotyping but mormons are very hard working and family oriented and thats the type of player that would thrive under Izzo. Also they usually have to much pride and morals to fall for dirty recruiting.

There has been "smoke" around every Kansas coach since Phog Allen.

What do you think it took Dick Harp to get Wilt Chamberlain from Philadelphia to Lawrence Kansas?

Anyone that doesn't think that's an easy sell is crazy. Programs like Kansas don't need 'smoke'.

Uh, wasn't it just a year or two ago that the FBI was investigating Kansas over a ticket-scalping scheme in which the university gave brokers thousands of dollars in premium tickets to be sold at above market value?

Just those in the final four

Perceived "dirtiness" of Final Four coaches

If you had to rank them, how would you do it based on either how dirty the coaches are, or how dirty you perceive them to be? Id go

Honestly I've thought the same thing. I think he and his parents would probably be put off by shady recruiting tactics.

By all accounts, he's extremely mature for a 17 year old, and realizes there is more to life than basketball. As the best junior in the country, that is pretty impressive if you ask me.

that had nothing to do with the coaches, that was rogue administrators. The same thing just happened at St. John's.

  • I was always curious about recruit's parents getting jobs with the program. Is it not a violation? I've seen it so many times. Larry Johnson is from my home town. Larry Johnson Sr coached my rival HS. Then suddenly he got a job at Penn State, LJ transferred to a school in State College and then he committed to Penn State the next yer.

Pay-for-play can almost never be traced back to coaches. It's always "rogue" boosters or administrators. I'm not saying Self is dirty; there's no evidence to support that. You can't deny, however, that the presence of hundreds of thousands of dollars in under-the-table cash assets raises questions about where that money went. Ticket brokers and the athletic department both benefit from having top players in the program, and top players like to get paid. It's not fire, but it is most definitely smoke.

The money went to sales marketers and ticket sales directors in Kansas' athletic department. They were lining their pockets. They went to prison. This scandal had nothing to do with Self and nothing to do with recruiting.
