Smoker, Stanton, Hoyer or Cousins

  • No love for Billy Burke? After sitting through 2 years of Todd Schultz, that guy's consistantcy was a breath of fresh air. Though he threw too many picks, and was generally a statue, it had to be hard playing QB for Saban....and he won some games. In 2 years as a starter he was 16-8 or something..and lead that team to that Citrus Bowl win.

Once again, look at the team. During Stanton's senior year, it literally got to the point where if the O did not get a TD, the other team's O would. You could literally see the pressure on Stanton to deliver on every series, and it showed with forced passes and holding the ball too long as the season went on.

He also had a ton of drops, as did Hoyer (NFL scouts actually did a study on Hoyer about his dropped passes and what his stats easily could have been, part of reason Pats were high on him).

Not to mention the two words that held him back more than anything from all-time greatness: lamar woodley. And don't ever forget that until that dirty play, Drew was delivering one of the biggest performances ever by a Spartan at the outhouse.

What exactly was dirty? Stanton was stripped and recovered the fumble, but in the effort he landed on his shoulder wrong. Doubt wooley ever saw the ball come out.

Poor Bill Burke, Todd Schultz and Ryan Van Dyke...

Only reason burke gets forgotten is bc of all the great qbs of the 90s and 00s. Schultz should have never seen the field. Dude was god awful, and rvd only has himself to blame. Dude would have been a star if he took the cousins approach

Yeah... I saw Stanton's senior year from the stands, and it honestly was nothing special. Hell, even that comeback against NU, most of what Drew did was throw slants to TJ Williams, and the NU linebackers inexplicably were never there to stop him.

I like Stanton but I just don't think he even belongs in the same conversation as Cousins or Smoker. I mean, the guy just couldn't throw a good deep pass...

Ill bite. You put stanton out there against wisconsin for the rose bowl, we win hands down. Stanton doesn't throw the wtf int, and keeps the chains moving instead of throwing a 20+ yr pass oob to kmart.

Smoker had about as many of these late game saves as Cousins, but keep in mind he had Rogers and Duckett.

How many against a top 10-ish SEC defense?

I must've missed something here, but when did Smoker all of a sudden become this mobile flash while Cousins is just a straight statue. Yeah, Stanton definitely was more mobile than any of them, but I remember Smoker after 2001 being very slow and sluggish at times. KC didn't run often, but when he had to, he would do it very effectively.

When? Cousins had 1 mobile yr…his fr yr, while smoker had 3 mobile yrs bf jls made him a statue in 2004.

Bottom line, cousins never used his feet enough or we would have won maybe 3 more gms during his time. Course this probably had to do w the coaches, but was very reculant to run outside of that uga gm.

Well, thats it for me. I knew it was a mistake to discuss anything football related with you.

We wouldn't have beaten Wisconsin either time with Stanton. Name one big game Drew Stanton ever won that he started besides ND '05.

Fwiw uofm was far more impressive during smokers yrs and nd had scums new dc.

In general, all of our qbs played against better ds than hoyer and cousins.

You have to be joking. Outside of the INT, in that game Kirk played one of the best games I've ever seen from a Spartan QB. Definitely better than anything in Stanton's senior year.

Stuff like this is why you're universally regarded as a complete moran around here. Cousins was awesome in that game. We lost because our defense and Isaiah Lewis suffered two horrible brain farts at the end of the game.

  • Cousins could have done little more to bring victory in the BT Championship game. We lost that game on defense and special teams.

To the poster who said Cousins did little with his feet, did you see the final drive in regulation against UGA?

Yea, I forgot stanton was responsible for fast fg, our defense, special teams, and calling 3rd and goal run plays from outside the 5 yrd line. Silly me.

    Oh, and nw 2006.

Well RVD got beat out by Smoker for his job. Didn't Burke only start one year? I think that's why he gets left out.

BTW, if we're talking about that game tying drive in the Outback Bowl shouldn't we mention what happened on the very next possession in OT too? Thank God UGA's coach chose to run the ball backwards 5 yards and take a knee so the Kicker missed the game winning FG.

Isiah lewis mistake #2 would not have happened if cousins decided to go for a stroll on 3rd and 10 instead of chucking the ball 25 yds oob to kmart. I was in the endzone and had a perfect view of that play.

No he would have run around like a moron for 30 seconds and then either taken a sack or thrown a forced INT.

Stanton sucked compared to Cousins. Yeah Cousins made some bonehead decisions in his time but I've never seen a QB constantly force plays that weren't there so many times as Stanton did. Hell, Hoyer was better than Stanton. Don't know much about Smoker, never really watched a game he played in.

Or we could talk about the rest of the game, you know, how Cousins almost single-handed lead us back to win it against a LOADED defense.

Can we bring up 2006 tape against Purdue and Illinois where Stanton couldn't move the ball a fuckin' inch to save his life? Bury your head in the sand all you want, Cousins is better than Stanton. Period.

    2 years...98 - 99.

QB for the upset of OSU in 1998 (that team's 6-6 record was so frustrating...that season was Saban's biggest failure as a head coach no idea why there was no defensive consistantcy) That 98 Offense was no joke...I think Saban held them back.

They played a huge schedule that year: @ Oregon, @ Michigan, @ OSU, @ PSU, a top 10 ND at home. Their cream puff opener v.
CSU was no joke as CSU came into that game no. 15 preseason...(still had no business losing that game...just as they had no business losing to Minn/Purdue by a point...)

By the way, the possession before this, Stanton fumbled.

People forget how Stanton completely enabled that comeback with 2 interceptions and a fumble in the fourth. All they ever think about is "fgsdljfBRADYQUINN OUR DBS WERE 5'9 JLS JEHUU WAS A BOWLING BALL"

Wasn't his fault. Cousins was actually at that game on a visit and he told Drew Stanton he would win the game, which made Stanton lose his mojo and lead to the three straight turnovers.
