Smotrycz leaving UM basketball

  • McGary is Dashonte Riley version 2.0. Tall guy who takes games off when there's big competition.

  • ...mcgary is not good and is already as old as appling and older than dawson

My God, I cannot wait for the collective UM community to see how long it takes to develop a big man, even a blue chipper. Especially when the recruit has been sliding down the ol' value pole...

I have had this conversation before. Even if he is overrated, McGary is going to add a ton of value to UM inside, especially in the B10 season. Again- Smotrycz lost his starting job this year when he had zero competition for the power forward spot. McGary will start his career as a better defensive and rebounding presence thatn Smotrycz ever would have been.

  • I wonder what the motive was here. Didn't seem like they had chemistry issues. Rather concerning if you're a Michigan fan.

  • Smotrycz May miss 1. Over the Next 10 years I'll say Michigan wins 2.

  • The only significant player going anywhere is Smotrycz. Christian stinks.....so does Brundage. Whoever a page back has never seen him play....he is a terrible shooter. That is why as fans of other schools, this kind of stinks. Pretty much anyone you bring in will be better than Christian and Brundage. They are not major D1 players. Smotrycz will hurt them no matter how the try to spin it. He was very effective in that system.

    I thought I remembered hearing/reading that McGarry was a 3-point threat?

Not if you mean a 3.0 GPA.

  • Burke, Hardaway, Morgan, McGary, Morgan start...fine I guess...you bench is...freshman?

Then what? What if Hardaway can't find consistency, what if McGary wilts playing against more experienced 20 year olds..injuries, foul trouble, cold shooting? Lineup flexibility?

Michigan lost all of their depth and pretty much all of their leadership between graduation and transfers.

He had better learn to stop running people over, or he will be on the bench in foul trouble constantly.

UM should still have decent post depth- remember Horford was hurt all year and redshirted. They also redshirted a freshman post player.

The issue is guard depth- I fully expect Beilein to try and land 1 or even 2 guards in the next month (and possibly try and get Zeigler).

  • They didn't want any of the three....oooops....forgot they all went to scUM and not to MSU or Ohio.

Adreian Payne rode the bench for most of last year as a 5* center. His main competition was an overweight / emotionally unstable Nix and Garrick Sherman.

I'm sure McGary will get a lot of minutes (out of necessity), but seeing is believing when it comes to blue-chip big men. Payne has come a long way in 2 years and was in no way ready for major college bball last year. Look at Fab Melo last year or Andre Drummond this year. Very tough transition from HS big man to college big man.

If Smot's leaving because he's worried about losing playing time to McGary, he's probably making a huge mistake.

  • 1) why on earth does Smotryczch need to trademark his twitter name? He's a nobody and his name's stupid
    2) does anyone have video of last year's game at the Breslin when Green beaned him in the skull with the ball? TIA

Not many guards available this late. Certainly not highly ranked ones. Z has to sit a year.

My favorite moment from a couple years ago was when Green or Roe or somebody got tied up with the ball with Novak, I think it was, and literally just threw the kid when he wouldn't let go of the ball.

I wonder if they got their B1G championship rings before they quit

I don't get it. He could not nail down a starting job the last 2 years when he literally had it handed to him. Now he was going to start over McGary and/or Horford? Its possible, but he would have had to really develop. As good a fit for Beilein's offense as he was, he got killed in the B10.

  • The loss of Smotrycz, Novak and Douglas this season almost makes it look like Beiline is trying to put a traditional team together. Bruke and Hardaway would make a pretty good 1-2 combo in a traditional system, and Morgan is a traditional style big. Of course, this is not what they're doing, so they better hope they pull a miracle like they did with Burke, because otherwise the offense just took a major hit. Who's going to spread the floor in their line-up next year? They are losing 3 of their top 4 or 5 3 point shooters, that is trouble (for them). And it seems like Smotrycz isn't leaving on pleasent terms - "I don't want to say too much right now" - that doesn't sound good.

I thought they'd probably drop off a little next year, now I'm pretty sure they will, Smotrycz was probably their 3rd most important player this offseason.
