I read somewhere that UM has a higher rated class coming in this year than MSU's. I guess those three must have figured with all that talent there was no chance that they would see playing time. Rather surprising when you think about it. With UM going to win the next several Big Ten titles and NCAA basketball championships you'd think they would want to stick around for all that extra hardware they are going to receive and not just that one impressive "We Made the NCAA Tournament" ring that Beilein was so proud of.

confused i don't know where you read that? we have the higher rated class in ESPN, Rivals, Scout, and 247. not that i care too much about them, but i would gladly take our 4 incoming guys over their guys any day of the week.

No, I'm saying that Payne hasn't quite lived up to his expectations yet as a five-star recruit, especially his freshman year.

Don't get me wrong, he's real close now, but he struggled mightily at first and it isn't fair to deem a guy is what he is two years into their careers. A lot of guys make a huge jump their junior years. (Neitzel, Ballinger, Suton, Nix would all be perfect examples of this)

I honestly think that Smotrycz would've been a 10 and 6 type of player next year. You can't tell me that you wouldn't want that on ANY team much less an undersized one like Michigan.

Recruiting rankings are about how they project, not how they will perform as freshmen. He was injured all summer before his freshman year, so he wasn't going to be ready. He has been playing very well, and showing his NBA talent in some games. The consistency will come next year, you can see how he's improved as the season has gone on.

I love our brethrens at MgoBlow:

Idiot A: "Maybe, but his body language towards the end of the season just seemed like he didn't give a shit really.. Some games he was a great contributor, others he didn't and nearly fouled out of a lot of games."

Idiot B: "I agree with you. If you watch the video of the team watching/winning the big ten championship when MSU lost, smotz was the only one not celebrating and kind of just sat their by himself."

    shake

If you watched that video, it was kind of strange. I know Beilein isn't the most intense or fiery coach, but it was odd how the players didn't really celebrate with him. It was like some of them didn't want to be near him.

lol Yes, I can see Wisconsin unveiling Smot 2.0 next fall, 50 lb's heavier and with a buzzcut.

I think Smotz is saying a big FU to the "fans" of UM basketball.

When I first saw the news of his transfer, this was actually my first thought.

He took a lot of heat for turning the ball over in the final seconds of the ohio game even though he was the only guy on the team who played well. He was visibly upset about it on the sideline, and with things like twitter and Facebook, it's easy for fans to tell him how much he sucks.

Pretty surprising to say the least. Brundidge and Christian...not so much as the 2 combined to play like 30 minutes, if that, this season.

Could be, every player but Burke was getting thrown under the bus on their message boards. The new guys + Burke were coming to save next season.

  • i really hope he goes to another B1G school... and then hits a game winning shot against UM. that would be the biggest FU to them.

That is unlikely. Pretty sure he'd have to pay his own way. And why bother? He can transfer to a mid-major and beat Michigan in the Tournament anyway.

They are in real trouble having Smotrycz, Douglass and Novak all leaving, probably their three most reliable 3 point shooters. And yes, Burke was their best player this year, but I think that Novak was probably the most important, they are really going to miss him. Now, if Burke stays, they'll have to ride him all season. He may actually be up to it, but Hardaway, not so much. Novak and Douglass were reliable. With Hardaway and Burke leading the way, you're going to have games where you beat good teams, but your also going to have game where you lose to very bad teams. Take away Novak, Douglass and Smotrycz, and that team could have lost to Penn state if Hardaway was cold, like he is about 50% of the time.

  • Mike Talley from Duquesne transferring too, heard a couple rumors of him and Brundidge going to U-D. Brundidge is no scrub, just should've been red-shirted this year.

  • It is kinda strange, Smotrycz was really playing well at the end of the season, hit some big 3-pt shots, and he had some good experience and would have been a leader next year.

Carlton Brundidge played well the few minutes he got to play. I thought he and Person played well together and he would have gotten more minutes next season.

Christian was more of a role player, haven't watched him enough to form an opinion.

I think it hurts UM from a practice time and system experience perspective.

Yea, there is no way this happened because Beiline wanted them gone. Smotrycz was a really important loss, and Brundidge very well could have been a good player in a year or 2. There is something going on with Beiline if you ask me, maybe the players don't like the system, or maybe it's something else, but there is no way this can be seen as a positive for um.

That is choice and shows he's a lot smarter than the umaa fan base.

I feel for him. Beilein sellls and sells and sells he needs 6' 8"-6' 10" bigs who can shoot the 3 to fit into his offense. Then after this guy spends 2 years doing what he is asked and keeping out of trouble he's, for all intents and purposes shoved out the door in anticipation of a redshirt who wasn't good enough to contribute this tear, a guy coming off a foot injury (Horford) (ask Byrd how easy it is to come back from these) and a guy who took the rest of the year as a medical redshirt for his knee(s) plus one 5* recruit.

2 thoughts. Belein and staff are putting a huge amount of faith in some redshirts (medical and otherwise) and incoming recruits. Novak and Douglas should feel fortunate they came in when they did because given today's news one or both could have been told they were expendable.

Strange day... but I don't think there is something going on with Beilein. Just weird set of circumstances. Anytime you lose people from your program it's a loss, but I would stop short of calling Symortcz and Brundidge "really important losses". I have watched every single UofM basketball game except for maybe 2 these past couple of years and Symotrcz is a nice player at times, but far too often he mops around, does not defend, and mentally takes himself out of games if his shot is not falling. That is not too say he could not reach his full potential down the line, but I have my doubts... he is the sole reason we even play a 4 guard lineup too begin with. Kid is just not tough enough out their on a consistent basis too warrant a starting spot or hold on too one for a whole season. Im curious too see how all these changes effect next years team...but one thing I do know is every year for the past 2 seasons people have said Michigan is going too be worse yet they come back better... in 2009 it was the loss of Manny Harris and Deshawn sims that would doom the team. Well, they came back much improved that next year in 2010 and were 1 shot away from a sweet sixteen apperance. This year it was the loss of Darius Morris... the team came back and won a share of the big ten title. The key is Burke... if he leaves it's inevitable that they will be rebuilding next year because we don't have a replacement coming in(Although that could change here soon, but regardless it will be a downgrade at the position). If he stays, I would expect them too come back pretty strong again.

He's actually more of a prototypical Notre Dame player than a Wisky guy. Bo Ryan prefers to mold them out of HS, and ND is a white boy transfer haven. He's also from Mass, so they'll sell him on that Northeast yet Midwest feel thing.
