So UM recruit McGary had to enroll at Prep school to qualify

  • Harry Hood said...

To be fair, Duke was a finalist for McGary.

I'd be a bit of a hypocrite if I made fun of the length of this thread because i've posted in it, so I do understand the interest in talking about this recruit.

That said, McGary will be 20 when he arrives on campus and if he is as good as advertised, Michigan will be tough, but he is likely to jump early.

More importantly, MSU is well positioned with several high end recruits. Outsiders see last year's debacle + the departures of guys like Allen, Lucious, even Sherman, Anderson, and likely assume that things are rough in East Lansing. However, Dawson and Appling give us two McDonalds All Americans in our starting line up, and if we can get Gary Harris, that will be a huge momentum boost to our already steady recruiting.

And to be fair, they won't be playing the kid two times next year.

So we are assuming all the UM recruits pan out unlike the ones of the past? Sounds like solid logic.

I agree that the guy is taking it a bit far, but I also have to admit that I think Beilein is quite a bit better at developing talent than Ellerbe/Amaker were.

  • I've watched a couple of youtube highlight mix tapes of this kid and to be honest, he just doesn't jump off the screen at me as a dominant force the way a Jadavion Clowney (Different sports, I know) did when I watched his highlight tape. When I think dominant or one and done material, I think of John Wall or Shaquille O'Neal who make it look like a man among boys even in high school. Where kids are falling on their faces trying to guard them or defend against a Shaq dunk.

yeah, because McGary once committed to Duke then was rumored to commit to UNC. MSU wasn't a finalist or even in the running for the kid so why is it a 15 page thread for a kid Izzo didn't even recruit and who never came to campus for a visit?

    Why? Really?

    Paging Bobby Sak...

Duke has a thread on Warren (NC State). Don't think they were in on him.

No. I clearly stated, "We will see what happens with this crop." There was no leap in logic or proclamations of greatness.

What I was pointing out is that there are more highly rated guys steadily flowing into the program now than at any point over the past 10+ years. Some of those past Michigan basketball recruits were obviously overrated, just as some these ones will be too. That's easier to overcome when there are more of them around.

It also helps that Beilein is a decent coach, and has proved to be good at identifying talent early. He wouldn't be getting guys like Darius Morris, Glen Robinson III, and McGary if he hadn't been the first major school recruiting them well before they blew up and became big time recruits. And then there are the guys like Hardaway and Burke (still a maybe on this one, but early reports have been very good) who stay under the radar until their recruiting cycle is essentially over.

Either way Michigan State is fine. All this means is more competition in the Big Ten. Or perhaps if Michigan has success, it will come at the expense of a school like Purdue, so nothing will really change. Instead of MSU competing for B1G titles with Ohio State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Purdue it will be competing for them with OSU, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.

  • This coverage is the kind of crap that is annoying. I don't remember any of this hype when our most recent highly rated guys Payne (#3 Center in the country) and Dawson committed.

The other b.s argument about Izzo only being good because of scuM being down (due to their own hand in cheating) does not hold water. scuM got their share of talent even with the impending tap on the wrist by the NCAA. The only guys that Izzo really beat out scuM for (when Fisher coached) were Cleaves and Bell. scuM still got top rated players for some time after.

JRich was also another one, but primarily Izzo got "Izzo style" players to fit his system (Neitzel, Morgan, Ager, and the many others). scuM still got guys like Horton, Dion Harris, Manny Harris, DeShawn Sims, etc... Most of the beneficiaries of scuM being down in Detroit were schools like Memphis, Syracuse, Tenn, Fla and others who came in and took talent out of state.

The only thing that changes is that they are trying to emphasize their program again and have invested money into it. The big difference is that the local yocals in the media will now be plugging college bball since scuM is expected to be good. I just have the feeling that this will bring back the chip on Izzo's shoulder after all that he has accomplished and yet doesn't get the respect from the idiots in the Detroit area.

A fired up Izzo is going to be kicking butts in the Big Ten again!

    Go Green!

p.s. it does help that Izzo has another guy who is fiery like himself on the staff now with Fife.

Why is everyone making a big deal about this? There are 4 other schools in the B1G that are getting better talent then UM (this includes MSU) and they don't play the live by the 3 die by the 3 ball that B____ plays. There are a lot bigger fish to worry about in the future. UM won't be picked to win the B1G let alone be FF favorites anytime soon. You all are acting crazy...

So UM is 5th in the Big Ten recruiting and yet 4th nationally

Its not just Mcgary, all 3 UM commits are higher rated than ANY of the MSU commits in the class of 2012.

    Not according to these rankings.

Harris is #10 also. MSU will have 4 of the Top 100, UM will have 3. McGary will be one and done (if he even shows up). So...who has the real advantage?

Reading comprehension is not your strong point huh? One class does not make a team/program. I'll say it again, there are 4 teams in the B1G that are bringing in more talent then UM. They will not even sniff a B1G Championship let alone go to a FF.

There's nothing wrong with making a big deal for getting McGary. He's a big time prospect and the best they've had for a very long time. If MSU had landed him we'd make a big deal. Not as big as UM makes it but we are already the BB king of this state and by a large margin. They of course see this as their chance to once again become a viable program instead of MSU's (disregarding last year) bitch.

I don't remember anything close to this when we landed Davis or Brown. The scUMers are getting a little too excited over one player...

And UM has beaten MSU every year in football recruiting since George Perles. How's that working out?

Must be nice having a future prdicting crystal ball cause last I checked MSU has exactly 3 commits and there is no Harris among them. Did Mcgary tell you he was leaving after one year or did your crystal ball? Im curious.

Good point. The last time the gap closed Hairston and Crawford committed to UM.

    Cackle.

And...McGary could be one and done OR he might not show up at all and just go straight to the NBA.

    I did.

And the fact that they offered all 3 of our recruits but we offered none of theirs.

Robinson blew up, but I wouldn't be crowing about Staukasaurus. He's ranked 79, our 3 are 80, 82, and 84.

And how come there is no data on staukasaurus? Doesn't give the "average, developing, good, outstanding" reports on his shooting, handling, strength, nothing.

Stauskas may end up being the best player in the class as at 6'6 he has point guard level handles and is possibly the best shooter in the country.
Here is some video of Stauskas going against Baylor University for the Canadian national team.

  • Just for fun here is Stauskas making 102 3 pointers in 5 minutes..Not anything like shooting in a game with defense but it certainly says something. BTW he shot 48% from deep last season.
