So UM recruit McGary had to enroll at Prep school to qualify

  • Duke also wants him so I'm sure his grades are fine.

they landed a prep schooloer last year too. Stop being a douche

Not sure how I'm being a douche. Just saying they can't play the We're Above It All, We're Michigan card anymore.

They've joined every other high major school that wants to compete.

where was he ranked prior to not qualifying this past season?

It actually sort of makes sense.

    1. His best friend, Glenn Robinson, Jr (from the same AAU team) is also enrolling at UM next year. 2. It's relatively close to home 3. He wants to become ball screen, jump shooting big, like Lamar Odom. JB could help him there.

The primary selling point has been that he can help return UM to "Glory" if Hardaway doesn't split after this season.

Like it or not, if Hardaway returns, they will be a top 10 preseason team next season and the likely B1G favorite unless Sullinger hangs around another year.

I'm not really impressed with most of their players currently, so these kids better be game ready. They are going to be dealing with an OSU program that seems to sign a Top 5 class every couple years, an Indiana team with the #1 class in the country, and an MSU team with a starting lineup with McDAA's and 4-5 Stars. Not to mention that Wisky always seems to compete for a title. It's one thing if Michigan is in a vacuum, but they aren't.

What is UoM shelling out for a #2 recruit in the country these days? Has inflation raised it from the Fab 5 era, or has the down economy kept it low? I mean, surely this guy needs to be able to take his girl friend on dates?

No more high ground. They're playing to win.

True dat. "High moral ground" and "NCAA" should never be used in the same sentence. It's a tough, hard sport, and if you want to known as a lovable, nice guy who touches young people's lives become Santa at the mall.

  • Is everyone really that nervous about this? Why is this relevant news?

MSU has a lot of good talent coming in, especially if Gary Harris decides to go green. Nothing to worry about here, move along.

Not to mention UM pretty much came out of nowhere last year--props to Beilein for that, hell of a job. But, the program comes back to reality this year and recruits will take notice.

    I don't know. I think they'll be pretty good.

Morris leaving is huge, of course. He was the engine and got them most of their open looks. Morgan got most of his points off Morris screen and rolls. Not sure if a freshman can do that as well as Morris did. And any team that depends on the 3 point shot to the extent they do is vulnerable in a one and done situation.

JB's a really good coach. No doubt. But now his defenders won't be able to use the "he didn't have any players" bit as an excuse for why he has never won anything. He's going to get players now.

  • why do you guys care so much that Michigan might actually land a big time recruit? Michigan beat MSU twice last season so i take it you guys are getting a little nervous. You say that grades are a problem and now we have shitty academics, but Duke is recruiting him. confused

Nobody said Michigan has shitty academics, they just said that this fallacy of "We only recruit outstanding students, we're Michigan" is complete bullshit.

Didn't say that. Just pointing out that the ol' UM hypocrisy won't fly this time.

And no, we'll be just fine. Congrats.

I still have no idea why, given his options, that he's probably going to choose Michigan. It really makes no sense. Not only basketball-wise, but you can't even say that he's in it for the academics. You've got one program that just won a National Championship and is an annual contender for an NC and then you have Michigan. A school who's best season in over a decade got them a .500 conference record and a cookie. If the kid cared at all about winning or preparing himself for the NBA, you don't go to Michigan. Kids are fickle though and if he's only going to play for a year or two and go pro, he can do that anywhere.

And, remember, he'll see the court MUCH faster at UM than Duke. For a kid who just wants to play basketball, exposure (big-time conference) and playing time are the tits. He'll get both at UM.

Following that, it has been reported that RR got them to reduce their admission standards for football. Hoke probably had them raised, though, seeing he's a true Michigan man.

I too think they will be decent this season as well.

The reason why I don't want UM to get someone like McGary is that JB is a good coach. If I were to make a comparison, I might use Mark Dantonio and how he develops talent. Look at what Mark Dantonio has done for us in football. If JB proves to be able to develop talent like MD does in football that will make me nervous.

Well, they are going to get good players. The story isn't that UM is back, it should be "why were they gone so long"? And they have to win with McGary. Heat is on. I am not worried because even if they get better, we didn't hire a southern fried boob who lit the program on fire. We still have Izzo and now we have Fife to help. We are not going to beat them twice a year all the time. But they aren't going to dominate us, either.

I don't think they will dominate either. I just don't think you can ignore or discount them getting someone like McGary.

I just used the comparison to MD after my friend mentioned it couple days ago. After he said that it got me thinking that they might not be so terrible now.

Getting McGary matters, long term, only if they win. Plenty of schools have failed with one and done talent (USC with Mayo, KSU with Beasley, Georgia Tech with Favors). Just getting him isn't enough. Have to win something.
