So, a buckeye friend...

  • I minored in Classical Studies in college so I'll convey what I remember. The Spartans weren't gay by the modern use of the term. They did however have numerous homoerotic relationships with young boys, never or at least not normally men. So they had physical relationships with these young boys outside of their marriages and it was fairly the norm. Many of these encounters occurred at the symposiums which were festivals where only males attended and the men basically got really drunk off wine and then had sex with either the boys working the event or prostitutes. Prostitution was actually highly frowned upon even though it was very prevalent because it was seen as wasting the families money away.

This isn't unique to Spartans specifically as this was common throughout all of ancient Greece.

  • The same social pressures that cause entirely straight girls to make out and fool around now caused entirely straight men to bugger each other back then.

They had sex with everybody. Men on men, girls on girls, girls on guys...didn't matter they had sex...and a lot of it.

Can't go with you there, Sparky. Men/boys was a specific "training" program, and the bonds formed lasted into adulthood; the elder would often help their "boys" land the Spartan equivalent of jobs/careers.

Paul Cartledge is a good read on this stuff.

And OP, just tell your "friend" he's just mad he took an asspounding in public last year.

The Spartans by Paul Cartledge - Powell's Books

The Spartans by Paul Cartledge: Sparta has often been described as the original Utopia-a remarkably evolved society whose warrior heroes were forbidden any other trade, profession, or business. As a people, the Spartans were the living exemplars of such core values as duty, discipline, the nobility of arms in a...

keeps telling me that the Spartans were all gay. Where is the proof of this? They all had wives and children...argue

all ancient greeks were pretty open to Bi sexual man/boy loving...so it wasn't just a spartan thing. So were the romans.

changes the interpretation of "Spartans!!! What is you profession!!! OHHH OHHH OHHH!!!!"

Hate to tell you Bro, but he's right. Google Spartan Pedastry. It was a mentorship program. Each Spartan warrior chose a boy as his "beloved" and mentored him in the ways of becoming a warrior. This relationship was also sexual. It was different times, dude. What we consider to be abhorrent now, was commonplace back then.

He's right. People are greatly offended by this type of behavior these days.

They had sex with dudes. It's true.

I don't know if they all did. Certainly a lot of them did. Bi-sexual (with young boys) is a more accurate description than gay. That was not unusual in ancient Greece or Rome. I don't believe this was considered immoral in their pagan religion as it is in the Old Testament of the Bible and the Koran.

Many were also bi-sexual in Athens and Thebes for example. The army of Thebes had a bi-sexual or gay "sacred 300" unit.

There is much to be deplored in the Spartan culture. The worst is their reliance on slave (Helot) labor. Once again the other Greek city states also dealt in the slave trade. Sparta was reviled for enslaving fellow Greeks which was considered offensive. Of course the Athenians enslaved POWs of Greek city states that rebelled against them. The difference was Athens was not nearly as dependent on slave labor.

Their practice of infanticide was also deplorable. Every new born Spartan was tested for weakness and killed if he or she failed the test. One reason why Sparta had such a low birth rate and ultimately fell.

In fairness the Spartan were also widely respected for their virtues of courage, honor and simplicity. Generally speaking they were considered more moral than most Greeks in terms of personal character.

I suggest reading several books written by Victor Davis Hanson and the ancients such as Herodotus for more information.
