They would be screwed. They get roughly 2.5 times more in higher education funding per capita than the lower peninsula. Combine that with the loss of students from the LP (without the in-state tuition draw) and their universities would be decimated. Then 3 of the 4 biggest cities (4 would be Houghton/Hancock if combined) would be in dire shape following the significant loss of student expenditures (especially during the winter months). It may have been feasible a long time ago, but the UP is now far too dependent on the economies produced by their public universities.

Plus closing down all the prisons filled with LP inmates.

Puerto Rico's vote is going to be close in November.

If the UP did become it's own state, Michigan would lose 100% of its moose population, and 95% of its wolf and elk populations. Not to mention 99% of people with an accent.

It's not that easy. There are serious constitutional issues involved. An amendment would be required.

I don't think DC should be a state. Congressional authority over the District is important to the operation of the federal government.

I do support an amendment granting DC (and the rest of the territories) Congressional representation.

Actually all of this would be good news for the economy. We'd see a lot of activity around the creation and selling of 51 (or 52) star flag!

As proven by the current Government of the District of Columbia, the majority of the residents of the District are not fit to govern themselves.

I didn't see this brought up, but wouldn't the Eastern part of the U.P. have to still be part of Michigan?

The Eastern part was always part of Michigan and the state only received the Central and Western parts of it following the Toledo war.
