They would be screwed. They get roughly 2.5 times more in higher education funding per capita than the lower peninsula. Combine that with the loss of students from the LP (without the in-state tuition draw) and their universities would be decimated. Then 3 of the 4 biggest cities (4 would be Houghton/Hancock if combined) would be in dire shape following the significant loss of student expenditures (especially during the winter months). It may have been feasible a long time ago, but the UP is now far too dependent on the economies produced by their public universities.

It's not that easy. There are serious constitutional issues involved. An amendment would be required.
I don't think DC should be a state. Congressional authority over the District is important to the operation of the federal government.
I do support an amendment granting DC (and the rest of the territories) Congressional representation.
