Sorry to interrupt your meltdown

  • Now, first off, I'm also a little bummed we didn't get Chip Kelly to come coach our offense. A sexy hire would have been great, and would have probably earned us this year's May Recruiting Trophy.

But let's consider something about this Bollman hire. First off, isn't our program built on defense and a steady grind-it-out offense? Does anyone here really want the next Rich Rodriguez to come to East Lansing, guns blazing on some gimmicky spread offense that will get smashed by any physical defense in the Big Ten? Yes, Bollman is a "safe" hire, and we're getting a known commodity. But do we need anything else? Do we need to ring up sixty points per game with Narduzzi's defense?

No. And Dantonio knows this. We need an offense that can maintain possession of the ball and put up a modest 20-30 points per game against Big Ten teams. That is not a tall order for anyone except Dan Roushar - and even the most stalwart of the Roushar defenders have to admit that it could not get much worse than putting up 10-16 points in every big game of the year.

So, I don't know how well this is going to work out. But I'm willing to give the guy a chance, because we don't need him to work any miracles. Besides, he's not Dan Roushar, and that already puts him in the plus column in my book.

  • The more I think about it, the more I like this hire. He was the OC on a team that had maybe the best 11 year run in B1G history. I don;t care if Tressell called the plays, Bollman was the OC, and did a lot more than just coach the O line.

The OSU fans don;t like him, but I bet his fellow coaches have a lot of good things to say. When you think about it, it actually is a fairly high profile hire. OSU was as good as anyone over the time Bollman was there and now he's our coach.

    A good, smart hire.

  • But why don't you want to score 60 a game because I sure as hell want to

  • Whether it's a hire/fire, trade, or draft pick, the initial knee jerk reaction of the board usually turns out to be off base. It's a great contrarian indicator of what actually is going to happen.

  • Having a good defense gives you a false sense of security by playing conservative Tresselball. It opens u up to devastatingly close losses unless you execute perfectly.

I think the Anastos reaction might turn out to be correct.

Maybe this is a test. Kind of like how Danton Cole's name got released.

You may be the first person in history to not want your team to score 60 points. That's absurd. I understand where you're coming from, but to say, "Hey, we don't need to score! Let the defense do the work." is just plan stupid.

What this basically says is that you need your defense to play damn near perfect every game and hope that your offense scores enough not to look stupid. I don't want 60 points a game. I want 70.

A terrific post...introducing logic and rational thought around here could get you banned, though.

Did anyone expect Coach D. to hire someone who doesn't match up with his personal philosophy based on ball control and defense first? I have faith that, the offense will reflect whatever skills the players have and if we have a more mobile q.b. at some point, I suspect the offensive play calling will reflect that. Much like Coach Izzo, I trust and respect Coach Dantonio to do what is best for the MSU program.

the OP never said he didn't want to score 60. He said we can score 20-30 & it will be fine because of the defense.

Putting up 20-30 points doesnt create the need to play perfect football.

We don't NEED to score 60 with the way the defense performs. Not NEEDING is different than not wanting. Read the OP again.

Of course I would want to make every game 60-6, but we still win at 30-6.... I get it, demand excellence, but when did scoring 30 points a game become poor?

No we don't need 60 pts a game but averaging in the high 20's or low 30's would help us keep elite offensive tent like let's say, Drake Harris. Other than that I agree.

Tell me what was left on the roster, what recruits were secured, how many upperclassmen we had coming back, and what type of season(s) is the program have with those guys in te system?

Better yet, talk about Anastos' connection to Lou Schmidt and the suburban hockey schools. K thx!

MSU hockey shouldn't finish last in the CCHA. That should never be acceptable ever.

Who is looking to go where O$U, scUM and Bama?. Sorry only team on that list that puts up tons of pts is Bama. It is easy for Bama to put up 60 points vs Bumtown University. Kids just want to win and go to the NFL.
