Space Camp

  • Does NASA still do this? I remember wanting to go so badly when I was a kid but there was no way my parents were coughing up 2 grand to send me. Has anyone here ever gone? I am pretty sure I hate you if you have.

That price is pretty damn reasonable. I wonder why it was so expensive when I was a kid?

For kids it is more expense, but the program is a week long. The adult progam is weekend only.

  • I wanted to go to Space Camp so bad when I was a kid. Hopefully I'll be able to send my kids.

  • I went to the one in Huntsville, AL when I was a kid. It was awesome! Our simulator shuttle crashed on the landing because my copilot didn't put the landing gear down. Pretty bummed out about that but the zero gravity chair was cool. I still have the flight suit stored away in my parents house somewhere.
Edit: that sounds WAY nerdier when I type it out.

Hopefully my daughter will want to be an astronaut for Halloween one year.

That sounds so goddamn cool. I remember watching game shows on nickelodeon and when they would announce that the prize was a trip to space camp the kids would lose their minds. The show would always cut to some kid having a blast in the gravity chair. Legends of the hidden Temple and GUTS were always sending kids to space camp. I am pretty sure I could have conquered the AGRO-CRAG if given the chance.

  • The problem is that you have to go to Hintsville, AL which is quite possibly the worst city in America.

  • I went as a kid while living in Atlanta, met a girl from Midland who I had a huge crush on. It was a lot of fun. I remember when my parents dropped me off and left my mom was crying. Our shuttle simulator landed properly, suck it. We didn't win any awards but it was a lot of fun.

  • I went to Florida. Every 5th grader in my school district (Plymouth Canton in 99) got flown to either of the 3 locations free!!! It was amazing and there was so much stuff to do with the Kennedy space center right there.

My sister got to go when she was in 5th grade because of this. She's two years older than me and I didn't get to go.

    I'm still bitter about it.

  • No someone died and he donated all the money to have kids go to space camp (i guess he was big into science). I think there was another district but I know that we were randomly selected.

  • I was in the same boat, wanted to go in the worst way... made it doubly bad when my cousins got to go, they had the coin and my single mother on a teachers salary couldn't afford it... oh they could have sent me, drop in the bucket for them, but instead chose to send their kids then proceed to remind me for years how incredibly fantastically awesome it was.

Closest I ever got was buying the book based on the movie at an elementary school book fair. Not the same.
