SpartanRocky's MSU vs. CMU Preview: Part II: MSU's O vs. CMU's D

The build up continues with a look at the Spartans offense and how it will match up with the Chippewas defense ...

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • how do you think the bulletin board material that MSU is providing helps CMU's cause? I'd say it won't do anything to help them, but I'm wondering what you think.

"That’s a game you should dominate. You should dominate a team like that and they should not be on our level at all. No competition, we should dominate this game.”

  • CMU's defense does not have bad aggregate numbers, especially for a MAC defense. Looking a little closer, they've been beaten by the run (230 yards and over 6.0 YPC given up to Kentucky) and through the air (355 yards on 37 attempts, 3 TDs vs. 1 INT by WMU), but not by both in the same game. This presents a good opportunity for MSU's run offense to try and get back on track, as Kentucky's running backs accounted for 188 of their 230 rushing yards (over 8 YPC).

CMU runs a 4-3 very similar to MSU's, complete with a 1-tech Nose guard and a 3 tech DT. Their MIKE is the leading tackler, and is one of 2 senior starters in the line-backing unit, though he's a first year starter.

Basically CMU is a major step down defensively from Notre Dame, but a definite step up from FAU. Key is going to be watching for offensive line development heading into the Ohio State game.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I think it's a wash between any perceived disrespect on CMU's part, as compared to an MSU team looking for a strong W after the ND game.

I think there is a difference between "we should" and "we will"

If I am a CMU player, I am thinking, yeah, 'you should' because you are in the Big Ten. If they said, "we will" then that might get me fired up.

So I don't think it is is a big deal.

Mistake on my part. The actual article says that he's not the starter and that Jackson is, but I forgot to change it on the line-up. Mea culpa on that one.

My stated goal at the beginning of the year was to get him between 40 and 60 total pass attempts this year. CMU presents the last good opportunity; as bad as IU and Minny are, it's hard to predict where MSU will be in Nov. and how bad they may need those games.

I think we'll see something similar to FAU; Maxwell has a series in the 2nd Q, or the 3rd series overall, depending on the situation, then KC takes the first series of the 3rd Q before turning it over to Maxwell. Each QB gets 1 total half of play.

If they have a decent lead in the 2nd half (20+ points and I realize it's a big IF), it'll be interesting to see how they handle the o-line. This group of 5 guys could really use extended playing time together to build the cohesiveness that is necessary on the offensive line. On the other hand, the longer they play the more you risk injury, and they absolutely cannot afford another injury, especially if it happens when the game is out of reach for Central.

In some ways these are the back-ups, so they need all the PT they can get. Even in a blow-out situation I doubt they're pulled until the final possession. If MSU is going to have any hope against tOSU in 2 weeks, the OL needs to get as much experience as possible. Now, for all I know they could gel immediately with Jackson and Fonoti, MSU could rush for 350 yards on 25 total carries, give up no sacks, pressures or hurries, and then proceed to run roughshod over the entire Big 10. Now, that's unlikely, but no one knows when the young guys will click

That's pretty much the one thing that gives me hope going forward; if we were playing like this with 3 RS SRs and a pair of RS JRs on the line, including 4 returning starters from the year before, I'd say that MSU was pretty much sunk this season. The fact that they're inexperienced means that we're likely looking at the floor, not the ceiling, of their play.

Looking a head a week and considering tOSU's QB play and MSU's OL problems, that could be a 16-13, or even a 10-7 game.

FWIW, we always talk about opponents being fired up after a loss, but the prevailing sentiment on the board is that MSU is always despondent and will come out flat after an L. I know MSU responded very well against FAU after not playing well against YSU. Factor in the '09 embarrassment and you'd think MSU will come out loaded for bear.

Match-up-wise, this this probably the best opportunity MSU has to get some rhythm going with the ground game. YSU held the ball too long to get something going consistently on the ground, FAU was too terrible to use Baker/Bell more than a total of 20 times and ND took the run game away. I'd like to see an 18-20 carry day for Baker, get Bell around the same and get them used to running behind the new OL.

If Fowler's healthy, use this game to get him back into game-day rhythm and establish a 2nd WR that tOSU has to prepare for. The OL needs every rep it can get, so MSU's D is going to have to play well on 3rd downs and get the ball back to the O. I'd like to see 70+ offensive snaps in this game for the Spartans.

I'd anticipate a sell-out, with all local hotels booked. Economics really isn't my specialty though.
