Spartans Snag OSU DE Transfer

  • I believe Hayes committed to OSU two years before signing day, so I'm not sure he's in Arnett's boat of "oops, that was a mistake". Interesting transfer.

A few thoughts - if MSU is taking him on scholarship there is

    A) no way he was run off because he wasn't good enough - if he isn't good enough to contribute at OSU, then he isn't good enough to contribute at MSU. I understand that OSU has incredible depth there - but MSU wants NFL DL. If Hayes is of that quality, OSU wouldn't run him off.

B)if ability didn't cause Hayes to leave OSU, have to wonder if they didn't tire of his heath issues - maybe Dantonio is more willing to work with Hayes's migraines?

    C) it's possible that the rumor about OSU trying to move him to DT is true. However, it seems weird that Meyer would offer him an unconditional release ... though that might be a product of OSU's probation.

    D. Urban is an assbag

  • I think Urban made this a non-press issue with the release. The only speculation that I feel comfortable making is that Kenny didn't fit in Urban's plans. Avoid the bad pub, and let him leave.

Anyone want to re-calculate the 2011 recruiting class, since MSU picked up a pair of top 100 guys in Arnett and Hayes?

I believe that rivals would move us from 31st to 24th. Total points around 1268 and aveage of 3.09 stars.

    Let's see. Here's the formula:

    http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=880&CID=1364602

    MSU was at 1,028 points.

Arnett was a 5.9 4-star, which is worth 120 points. He was also the #84 player overall, which is worth another 36 points

Hayes was a 5.9 4-star as well, worth 120 points. He was the #68 player nationally, which is worth another 39 points

The 2 combine to give MSU another 315 points, for a total of 1343. That puts them #21 nationally, ahead of Michigan.

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/teamrank/2011/all/all

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Don't forget to add the Jamare Mills - he was a 5.6 3 star TE in the 2011 class. Are we top 20, yet? haha

First of all, welcome to MSU!

And 3 of those 4 project to SDE with Calhoun being on the only WDE. You'd imagine one of the three moves to DT eventually. It's a wealth of talent and I know our coaches will find creative ways to get everyone on the field if they deserve it.

Hopefully we can pull 1 WDE like Cooper in this recruiting class.

Lyles is a WDE right? I also think Tiawan Jones will play DE in some situations.

I downvoted both those posts, and they are still at +17 and +18. Something fishy going on here.

Edit: the SpartySpart1 posts, not Larry's posts.

  • I dont think it will be an issue with the log jam. I would guess that one of the four could go pro early or one go switch to DT.

Don't know, just thought it'd be fun to look at; it gives MSU 3 straight top 25 classes from '09 - '11 . . . and is also a nice reminder that recruiting rankings aren't always all they're cracked up to be. Arnett's not in the starting line-up, and Hayes would likely be buried in the MSU depth chart to start. Pretty impressive eye for talent that MD has, when 3 top 100 guys (LT is the other one) aren't starting.
