Spot On Analysis of the Impact of Kentucky on NCAA BBall

  • SIAP, searched and couldn't find it.

This article is fantastic. Chuck Klosterman perfectly breaks down why every college basketball fan in America should be rooting against Kentucky this weekend.

John Calipari, Anthony Davis, and what Kentucky's march to the Final Four means for college basketball - Grantland

They're going to win. And what happens next will be really bad for college basketball.

  • Probably a little too fatalistic, but he nails the problem with Calipari. I don't think CBB will get to the point like CFB where you have to cheat to win, but if it does, it'll just mean the B1G season title is the most important banner - jsut like football.

  • I thought this was a great piece and probably (mostly) true. As long as these kids are required to go to college for a year, it will make way more sense for a program to tout that it specializes in managing the egos of a bunch of superstars and then anticipating their immediate departure, and even hooking them up with good agents. If you were an NBA talent, would you rather go to UK and basically fart around with other NBA players and overwhelm the competition easily, or get yelled at and "molded into a winner" by a coach's coach?

  • Actually, bad article. It does not compare him to any other big coaches as far as style, it simply implies that because he is somehow "transparent" about the kind of people he is trying to recruit, he gets those recruits.
It does not mention anything beyond that simpleton explanation. Nor does it mention most schools would take those same recruits, Cal just happens to get them all for some WWW'in reason. Despite the fact he is rarely seen during the active summer period or is seen on any AAU/Nike/Addidas tour circuits, when every other coach in the country is there.

It also casually disregards the 7 prior seasons in which the same business model failed. IF uk wins this year, that would be 1 for 8, hardly earth-shattering odds with so much talent at your disposal.

Those are good points. But you also have to consider that while he hasn't been winning national championships, he was/is dominating his conferences with those players and putting his team in the position to compete for the title. It's not like he's going to rattle off five championships in a row or something.

I think Cal is taking advantage of a crappy system right now that sucks for everyone, and at some point you have to concede that it's an easy way to put your program in a position to compete for a title every year and keep the fan base happy. It's basically the opposite philosophy of a guy like Izzo, who wants to coach his ass off with whatever players are willing to work with his style (he said as much the other day).

  • "...obliterated Indiana in the South Regional..."

Wasn't it like a 5 point game with 5 or so minutes left? Final margin of 12 because they hit 15 straight FTs to end the game? Wow, what an obliteration....

  • Read the same piece last night after trying to watch the McDonalds game.

His premise makes perfect sense when you see that some of those 4 or 5 players who were undecided still had Kentucky on their list. UK wins, and several more scholarships open up and Calipari repeats the process.

Although I would not be disappointed if UK loses maybe a UK win gets the NCAA to start a system that changes the 1 and done stuff.

  • That great guy Cal has coached at 2 other schools...both of which he left on probabtion without getting a single ounce of reprimand or punishment.

Cal is the only coach who does not spend the majority of the summer on the circuit, yet he always gets the top recruits.

Cal is an underlying of WWW.

Cal, again, has been 0-7 so far with this formula. 1 for 8 is not tha impressive either.

Cal's strategy also attracts the Cousins on the bb world, another reason it has a high failure rate. You aren't always getting the highest of character kids when you're, um, "prepping" them for how pros get paid.

  • Isn't the NCAA instituting a minimum graduation or Team GPA requirement for access to the tournament???

I remember watching the Syracuse opening round game and the announcers were saying that when the rule takes place, that this Syracuse squad would have been ineligible to compete.

NCAA preaches "student athletes", they should penalize teams with revolving doors like Kentucky.

What do you think the white guys at the end of the bench are for?

Oh, yes there is, and cal's perfected it: leave for another school, preferably a nike school with high grad rates already in place.

If Kentucky wins a championship this year, I feel there will be a 0% chance the NCAA will investigate. They don't want a championship "tarnished" if they can help it. Look at Auburn football last year.

It's funny because I argue with my friend about Kentucky and how it's bad for the sport. He completely supports them and says "hate the game" and that Kentucky is doing what they are allowed to do by the rules. He he also went to Alabama, so I know where he got his perspective.

  • That article is ridiculous. Here's a good re-buttal:

EDIT - For those with short memories, Kentucky went 10-6 in the SEC last year and Butler was in the National Championship game.

"The rule as it exists in basketball now comes from the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA owners and the NBA Players Union. The owners want the most mature players possible entering the league, ideally with a little name recognition acquired from playing televised college games. The union tends to worry more about the jobs of older players than of young guys who have yet to enter the pros. Ultimately, those are the only parties that can legally change the “one and done” rule — and they should." Washington Post

  • I realize Kentucky fans are basically delirious, but I have to believe any thoughtful supporter among the lot will feel at least a slight sense of emptiness if they win it all. Rooting for Kentucky must be like rooting for a minor league baseball team. You know the players don't give a crap about the team, the town or the school.

I am certain that if those players were at MSU this year, I wouldn't have been nearly as excited about the team as I was about the one Izzo and Co. put on the floor this year. Would I root for them? Sure. Would it be cool to have a banner? Yeah. But in my gut I believe what's happening at Kentucky is at least partially responsible for slightly waning interest in college hoops.

    Just my 2 cents.

This. x1000. I want my college sports teams (MSU) to bring me pride for the university. Hanging banners is fun and all, but I need to feel good about the way my university is operating. And although college athletics has a very small piece in terms of what it does for the university and the greater community, it is obviously by-far the most visible, and thus gets the most attention by outsiders.

Frankly, I would not want to be a UK alumni right now knowing that we are utilizing a shady system to get wins and championships. I would much rather take our season than UK's for that very reason.
