So you see Conway as not being in the picture? Or France not sliding to OG if having him there and Burkland at OT makes the line better as a whole?

I think Conway will have a hard time reaching the playing group, simply due to so much time off and talented players ahead of him with more experience. Certainly not counting him out completely, but it's a tough challenge. And Dantonio mentioning a possibility of France to OG is interesting, but I think the coaches are pretty pleased with his development at tackle this spring. I thought Burkland would regain the starting role and he still very well might, but France was selected ahead of Burkland in the spring game players draft. That really stood out to me as a vote of confidence for the junior.

I think Burkland will have a stronger fall camp, as I think he wasn't up to speed, and France got a heck of a baptism by fire when Burkland was out, as well as the extra 3 weeks of bowl practice.

I do recall hearing the coaches say Conway was at the least Fou's successor.

  • Any specific comments on Donavan Clark? He impressed me a lot as a recruit, and we always kind of forget the Interior Line recruits for a year or two until they develop. So how is he done in his first year?

    gcscots20

  • Two years from now it could look like:
    LT - Burkland
    OG - Treadwell/Clark
    C - Jackson/Allen
    OG - McGowan/Higgins
    OT - France/Conway

If the two deep is anywhere close to that, I would feel pretty good.

    gcscots20

  • My only concern going forward is the lack of tackles. We have a bagillion of talented guards, but only a few true tackles. Of course, I am just knit picking tho.

France started last year at LT, while Burkland was at RT. It was Fonoti who was thrown into the fire at RT last season in relief of Burkland, not France.

Burkland's "natural" position out of HS was RT. He made several comments about having to learn a new position this spring.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

You misread what I wrote- France came in as a converted DT and played the whole season at OT, thus learning by fire, while Burkland sat the majority of that time. Thus, from the development stand-point, France really has a leg up right now.

Ahh, I thought you were saying France was thrown into the fire BECAUSE Burkland was injured. my bad.

  • FWIW, Benenoch recently got offers from Oklahoma State and Arkansas, and is receiving interest from Alabama.

    Macks

  • Klatt and Conway were big time recruits.Thought Conway did a Matador routine a few times in the spring game, but can these guys help?

At the time they were huge recruits.

Well, as far as the "next wave" of OTs, you'll have Burkland and Dennis for the next 3 years (through the 2014 season). Keiler will RS this year and be a RS Soph in 2014. MSU is taking 2 OTs in the '13 class, so those guys will be RS FR in 2014.

So, for 2015, you'll have Keiler as a RS JR, the 2 '13 OTs as RS Sophs and probably 2 '14 OTs as RS FR. A little young, but not a crisis either.

Edit: Toss Conklin in there as well as a RS JR in 2015.

Burkland very well could get a 6th year Medical for 2015. I'm going to say that the starting line for '15 will be:

    LT: Burkland (RS Senior [Medical])
    LG: McGowan (RS Sophomore)
    C: Allen (RS Senior)
    RG: Benenoch (RS Freshman)
    RT: Norman (RS Freshman)

    6: Higgins (RS Sophomore)
    7: Kieler (RS Sophomore)
    8: Clark (RS Senior)
    9: '13 OT #2
    10: '13 OG #2

I dont know what makes you think that Benenoch starts over Clark. Weren't all the reviews of Clark's scout team performances last season good?

6th years are few and far between. MSU is already going to be applying for 6 years for Hoover, Treadwell and Ray Jr. Ray Jr. should be a lock, and Hoover has a good shot (if he wants it) because he only played in half a game. Treadwell and Burkland played the first 2.5 games.

Edit: You're off on your classes. McGowan, Higgins and Kieler are '12 kids, meaning they'll be RS JRs in '15. Benenoch is a '13 recruit; he'll RS during hte '13 season, be a RS FR during the '14 season and be a RS Soph the year you're looking at. Same with Riley Norman.

ah, my mistake on the classes. but you have to think though that they would at least try for the 6th year with Burkland. he really only played in two games (1/6 of the season) which is less than the 30% required.

  • Nothing is a better sign of excellence in a program than quality depth in the offensive line. Even if none are as good yet as Foreman was, and we don't yet have the dominant tackles of the Perles years, I like where this is heading. Remember 3 years ago, when we couldn't even figure out a starting group, let alone a starting group 2-3 years down the line?
