Nothing is a better sign of excellence in a program than quality depth in the offensive line. Even if none are as good yet as Foreman was, and we don't yet have the dominant tackles of the Perles years, I like where this is heading. Remember 3 years ago, when we couldn't even figure out a starting group, let alone a starting group 2-3 years down the line?

    1) I caution people about using the term "quality" to describe MSU's depth. There's promise, and there's #s, but this unit was not playing at an elite level last year, so it's hard to give the back-ups a "quality label".

    2) That said, OL takes the longest to develop of any unit on the field and given MSU's attrition, this is the first season where MSU's starting 5 does not include: A Walk-on, A 1st year JUCO, A 1st Year Player at the position. Every single member of the 2-deep was either a scholarship OL, or are in their 2nd season at the position (France/Treadwell). In short, I rule out nothing for this position, because there's simply nothing to compare it to under Dantonio.

    3) Off of #2, I think the reasons for optimism outweigh the reasons for pessimism. MSU is no longer relying on 1 or 2 guys to hold down a position, but rather 1 or 2 guys to emerge of a group of 4-5. That tilts the odds in MSU's favor.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
