Story on Byrd's Struggles, both physical and non.

  • Being just a redshirt freshmen, it was obvious tonight he still has the potential to contribute in the future.

    do ya think?

UM, Green Bay and Chicago teams all have one thing in common: They all suck

    Clemenza

  • +1 on the bump. A lot of people took some gas in this thread, but everyone seemed to have a similar point of view. We are all empathetic to his struggles and hope he recovers in all facets to be a key contributing, 3 pt assassin in the future.

  • It's up to him. Being discouraged is understandable but he looked like a player tonite. He will just have to work his way back. Injuries like that take a toll on you. You get out of shape, lose your muscle memory and some guys worry that they will be hurt again. He is only 20.
Let's hope for the best for him!

    rodent

  • still needs to learn how to play defense, but the kid puts on a shooting clinic in warm ups every game. here's to the future!

    MikeMan91389

  • Feel for the kid. Anyone would be frustrated with those injury setbacks. He has three more years. He will be fine. If his foot holds up he will be a great Spartan 3 point artist. Awesome to see him knock some down tonight.

No he's not. Not even close to being as big as Summers or Thornton.

    Uhhh You drunk?

    Summers - 6'-5" 205
    Thornton - 6'-5" 205
    Byrd- 6'-7" 205

I think he was referring to Harris playing at the 3.

    Harris' measurements: 6-foot-6, 198 pounds and a 6-7 wingspan

Christian Watford among college guys at Kevin Durant Skills Academy | The Hoosier Scoop

Nike released the rosters for the Kevin Durant Skills Academy, going on right now in Chicago, and Gary Harris was among the high school guys on the team. But so was Christian Watford. The Indiana junior was among 18 wings invited to be a part of the three-day camp, which leads into the LeBron James Skills Academy next month in Akron, Ohio.

Draymond Green, Magic Johnson, and Oscar Robertson are the only players to have two triple-doubles in the NCAA Tournament.

  • Nice to see him knock down a couple shots tonight. Hopefully we see some more positives out of him in the near future.

  • If he can improve his defense he could Play more right now especially when teams hey are playing against go into a zone.

Right now though I think he struggles wih lateral quickness on D similar to gauna.

Next year there will be more PT available with green, Thornton, and wood all gone.

He should get more pt because they will need shooters. All three of the guys graduating are MSUs best spot up shooters.

If he can Play d he could be very good.

  • I going to assume Nix will lose more weight and replace Day Day. When Valentine is in he will be a point forward/off guard.

    Appling(25)-Trice(15)
    Harris(25)-Kearney(10)-Valentine(5)
    Dawson(25)-Byrd(10)-Valentine(5)
    Nix(15)-Costello(15)-Gauna/Kaminski(10)
    Payne(25)-Nix(10)-Costello(5)

    Applingbyrd

  • Nix will never play the 4, let alone start there.

"The worst thing I ever did was jam a finger," Byrd said of his basketball career before East Lansing. "When I got up here I was 215 (pounds), 4-percent body fat. I was in incredible shape. After the first surgery, all I did was workout, workout, workout. But after the second and third surgeries, it takes it's toll and a year-and-half off isn't a good thing.

"(Coach Tom Izzo) doesn't trust my body. I've got to be realistic, I don't trust my body very much, either."

Byrd laughed as he said so, but it was a laugh soaked in frustration.

The pain behind Byrd's wit these days is familiar to his father, Kelly, a longtime pastor in Fort Wayne, Ind.

"The sense that we get when we're with him and when we talk to him, I would say it's a real mix of deep disappointment and frustration and confusion,"

    Bump...

The frustrations are still very evident. His physical issues are almost entirely resolved, but the confidence issues are obviously still there.

    + zilly.

Go back and look at the shots he's hit this season. Catch Shoot. You can see the moment in his mind where he thinks.

I wonder if we couldnt run him off some screens and tell him that if he doesn't shoot the ball, he is benched. Your thought process is "Catch, Shoot, GO!"

At this point, I feel like he can still give us "Mike Chappelle minutes". Chappelle struggled with his shot for a while, but came up HUGE in the national championship game.

I haven't given up on Byrd, but I think he needs to have a conversation with someone who has been through what he is going through. Coaches, players, there is really nobody around who can appreciate it... Perhaps if Chappelle is playing in the alumni game, he can have a heart to heart with Byrd. Would be another case of Alumni giving back.

Exactly. In the "Big Ten Elite" episode on the 2000 team, Chappell said something like, "The toughest position on a team is being 'the shooter.' If you miss a few, you get down on yourself and everyone gets down on you." I think that's what is going on with Byrd right now. I think Byrd just needs to remember that it'll come back as long as he keeps working hard.

As a fellow shooter, the worse thing that can happen is you. When you're thinking your not hitting. Honestly, what helps the most is being tired. Magically the shots go right it since its all no thought and muscle memory. Have byrd be a 1 man press and then have him jack a shot. Dudes stroke is pure if he gets his legs set.
