Suggest a Monitor for my Computer

  • Looking to purchase an extra monitor that I can hook up to my laptop. The cords don't matter much because I can buy adaptors for pretty cheap & I have a couple laptops that all have different display ports anyways. I'd prefer to spend <$250 but I want it to display 1080p. I was looking on Newegg.com and I saw a few reasonably priced monitors but I'm not exactly sure on their quality. Are there any other websites you suggest looking at? What specs makes the biggest difference in terms of picture?

Another thing I'm curious about... should I get something LCD or LED? Which is better and does it make that much of a difference?

I've been shopping around and have a few in mind but I'm hoping someone here has gone through this and can give me some advice.

  • Whenever I'm TV or monitor shopping, I like to find a model I like online and then go check it out in person at local place to get a feel for it (or vice-versa). It's a little more leg work, but entirely worth it. ViewSonic makes a quality monitor for cheaper than a comparable one.

This is a Pallas’s cat. Their round pupils give them an odd human quality. They disturb me...deeply.

  • I am also looking I have narrowed it down. You should get an led, and an ips display. The ips display will allow better color reproduction and wider viewing from the side.

  • What do you do on your computer? If you do gaming you will want a higher refresh rate; design work you'll want higher resolution, etc. I personally wouldn't buy an HD monitor (16:9), it's just limiting your pixel height. I prefer the widescreen monitors (16:10). What size do you want?

Regarding LED/LCD the main difference is the power output. LEDs are much more efficient. The display quality and all is not much different. I don't think they're worth the extra coin.

This. I just bought a refurb 24" widescreen Acer and it's beautiful, I only paid $144 after shipping. Try newegg, tiger direct and geeks.com (this is where i got my refurb).

I'll mostly be using it for programming/web browsing. I know it's not really that important I have an amazing picture, but I figure if I don't buy something decent it will be completely out of date in a few years & I'll end up replacing them sooner. Plus, the more pixels, the more I can fit on the screen.

Can he get that in his price range. I just got a NEC MultiSync 2490WUXi2 for photo editing, and it kicks ass. Spent a little more than $250 though.

  • 27 inch Samsung...I've got a few of these hooked up...

  • How much did those cost you? I have a Samsung tv, phone, & monitor at work. I am very happy with all of them so I have been looking into possibly going with Samsung here too. I'm also thinking about getting one with a tv tuner because I have cable hooked up in my room but no TV in here. Only problem is the cost is getting kinda high.

  • I got a sweet gaming rig upstairs. Three monitors in a row.

Most games will only support 1-2 monitors, so I'll usually toss the news or C-Span or something on the other. gun

If you like Samsung, here's a 23" LED for $150. I'm not a fan of the 16:9 or the high gloss, but it seems like a pretty decent deal.

Slow 8ms response time, and not LED. Not being LED is not that big of a deal, unless you are trying to save power, but the response time is kinda slow. Typical response time for a modern computer monitor is 5ms.

oh I don't know where I got that it was an LED. Must have just not looked close enough. Yeah 8's pretty slow, but if you're using it for programming/web browsing it's probably not a big deal. Watching movies or playing games would be sketchy though.
