It isn't more sad, he's just more well known. And since he was successful, respected and well-liked, it will break down barriers and remove stigmas that many people have towards mental illness.

Probably because what drove him to do it involves using his talent to entertain us in a sport most of us all love.
The more this happens, the more sports will change. The NFL and NHL in particular have already significantly changed the way thier games are played in the last 20 years due to persistent head trauma, for good measure. But if these high profile cases keep coming, it's going to affect sports in general in big ways.

I guess no one explicitly said it was more important than other deaths on here, but the reactions would allow one to believe that people think this is an event of great importance. Also, I've gotten several texts from friends altering me to the fact that he killed himself with commentary like "damn. I can't believe it." I didn't know this guy and I feel zero connection to him because he wore a helmet and made a lot of tackles. To the people saying they can't believe he could do this with three kids: maybe he knew he was a piece of shit father and the kids would be better off without him in their lives. Maybe their mother will meet an incredible person to spend her life with that she wouldn't have met otherwise. I just hate this Michael Jackson/Whitney Houston, "Oh I've heard of this person so it's a terrible terrible tragedy" nonsense that our great nation loves to sensationalize. Some people aren't great people and the world can be a better place without them.
