Tailgating @ CMU

Yeah, well if they want others to come to the game, they need to lighten up these restrictions. No pop up canopies, no RV's, no grills, beer limit (honestly the first I've ever heard of that), etc. Hopefully, they'll relax these for the MSU fans coming in, but I suppose they can make more money off of the tickets they'll write to those unsuspecting fans.

We're gonna need updates from a CMU fan on this prior to the game. What's that message board where the guy basically talks to himself? He's gotta know what's going on right?

Hmmm how do they feel about sofas?

  • I called STO today to buy another OSU ticket and got the confirm on CMU biggrin but forgot to ask about parking passes. Do you have to get them from CMU?

Good question. From what I can tell by their less than straightforward explanation, the student lot is the one with all the restrictions.

I am lot 73 and still, after reading everything on the CMU site and talking to others, unclear to me.

  • New, refined policy released tonight:

The new policy states that alcoholic beverages are permitted only at football game tailgates, excluding tailgates for other CMU sporting events without prior written Athletic Department approval.

While there is no limit on alcoholic beverages per person, the policy states that tailgating will not be permitted earlier than four hours before kickoff, nor is it permitted once the game starts.

“There’s no limit on the amount of containers, which is one thing that students were very mad about,” Gawronski said. “There are still no glass bottles for safety reasons and you can’t bring kegs in, but it treats students like adults where I think the past policy was a bit too harsh.”

The policy will exclude kegs or similar containers for mass alcohol distribution, drinking games that encourage excessive alcohol consumption and glass containers in tailgating areas.

Students, alumni, faculty, staff and visitors will all be held to the same standards, which van der Merwe said was an important aspect of the new policy.

From what I gather, 6 per person and no bottles, unless these restriction are for certain lots only.

Can you drink/tailgate in any of the lots on the CMU parking guide or do you have to be in a specific one?

  • So for those of you scoring at home.

Tents are okay, behind cars only
Unlimited cans of beer, no bottles
Small grills... No towing a pig roaster
Amplified music is okay, just don't be obnoxious
    No animals
    Tailgating starts at 11:30
No drinking after start of game.

  • The Kroger parking lot might be the best place to park. Check out the First Wok for some cheap, shitty Chinese in the adjoining strip mall.

Appreciate the work you've done here, especially because we finally got an answer out of STO.

Some of these rules seem a little arbitrary... CMU learned the hard lesson that clamping down severely on tailgating solves nothing, just pushes it elsewhere. Ours is far from perfect but give me a solid 6+ hours of tailgate time, not this 4 hour shit

  • 2012 Tailgating Policy:
The Student Government Association took a leadership role in working with the University to define better strategies for tailgating and create a game-day atmosphere that every fan - students, alumnae, parents, community members, university members and guests - can be proud of.

Representatives from CMU 's Athletics Department, Office of Public Safety and Office of Student Life met with representatives from the Student Government Association to update CMU's tailgate atmosphere in a way that fosters a safe and enjoyable game day experience.
As a result, three major changes have been implemented:

Anyone - student or non-student - may tailgate in any General Parking lot. No single lot is designated as a student tailgating lot.
Tailgating has been expanded from three to four hours prior to kickoff.
The same policies are applicable to all individuals participating in tailgating.

Cost: CMU students can pre-purchase a General Parking Pass for $5 at Ticket Central (located in the CMU Events Center atrium) or on game day at the lot for $10.

The Student Government Association will establish a committee of student representatives and leaders who will meet on an ongoing basis during the Fall to evaluate tailgating and to recommend strategies to improve safety and management.

Correct. It is the student lot that has the restrictions.

CMU learned the hard lesson that not having some common sense restrictions makes it almost impossible for ambulances to respond to emergencies in the tailgating lot. CMU had actual problems to solve, MSU had 'alumni don't like this' problems.

  • Heres the scoop--Usually one lot at the south end of the stadium is the students lot. Due to the crowd they are selling passes to that lot. Students will be much more scattered, NOTHING like the lot will be for the wmu vs CMU game, as that will be "entertaining mayhem". There is no longer a "limit" on beer , etc other than no kegs, drinking games, etc. I have always been in the north lot and there has never been a limit on beverages in that lot. As at every school if you aren't an idiot you wont have any problems. They are showing the game on the big screen at the redone McGuirk Arena for those that dont have tickets (the big screen there is great, way nicer than our stadium board which will be getting upgraded soon I hear). Lets hope for a great weather day in MP !!

As did mine but I'm in J, Row 46.

I'm gonna guess they have 50 rows?

The real shame is that we won't be able to get out there before 11:30 a.m. 4 hours of tailgating is pretty lean.
