Talk me into or out of a move to Chicago at 43...

  • Consulting/ turnaround gig... Have a very lucrative offer which could lead to long-term/ permanent.

I have a 12 year old daughter I would need to see/ maximize time with.....

I'm 43 so ... I'm old for this type of thing, and this fact eliminates a lot of the positives- ie young chi women, etc

Anyone do this later in life ( relo, commute for kid or fam) and make it work?

  • Go and don't look back

At 43 the offers to relocate to a place like Chicago aren't going to increase as you get older.

  • I am 43 and would do it in a heartbeat, if I was looking. I would like to live downtown, however I would not be interested in living in the burbs.

Sir, let us all tell you about the "Viagra Triangle"

A sub set of the "Rush Street" nightlife district on Chicago's Near North Side. So named for the abundance of mostly-affluent older men who frequent the local bars, and the "triangle" where State and Rush Streets come together (with East Bellevue Street being the base of the triangle, anchored by Gibson's restaurant, the unofficial headquarters).

The gentle ecosystem of the Viagra Triangle could not exist without a fully-stocked pond of anxious, and artificially infertile females. Seven years prior she may have been called a "Trixie" in and around Lincoln Park, but with an East Bank membership, a Platinum card of her own, and several upgrades to the base Lexus, she is looking for more, while her looks and latest Botox treatment hold out).

Though, claimed as fact in other definitions, it is extremely rare to see participants in the Viagra Triangle scene parking their behinds, much less their Flying Spurs and 911s, anywhere south of Oak Street or North of Cedar. The important, and notable exception is when the bars in the triangle close, and he has not yet sealed the deal. In such cases, overtime must be played at The Lodge on Division Street, which is open til every bit of 4AM during the week and 5AM on the weekends ("if three bottles of Cristal have not done the job, maybe a few PBRs will," is the thinking).

Chicago has a lot more to offer than just chicks, though obviously thats a plus. Tons of parks, beaches, trails, world class architecture and dining, shopping, a thriving city center, proximity to the rest of big ten country, theater, museums, great and varied bar scene, etc etc. One of the only drawbacks is that you have to deal with Bears fans.

Don't live downtown though, that's overrated.

  • The 12 year old daughter thing here is the biggest factor, in my opinion. She still needs her dad and wants to see her dad. In a few more years, she will continue to need her dad, but just won't be as willing to spend time with dad as she will be wanting to spend more and more time with friends. My youngest is 15 now, what time we spend together is great, but damn she is busy. Having said that, I think you would love Chicago living, I know I would if given the right opportunity.

Just curious, where would you recommed the OP live? I've thought of just jumping ship and making a move too (I can work from anywhere), and I'm wondering what a local thinks.

    Lincoln Park
    Roscoe Village
    Logan Square
    North Center
    Lincoln Square
    Ravenswood
    Bucktown/Wicker Park

Depends a lot on proximity to job, owning vs. renting, house vs. condo, income, etc. I would consider West or South loop too.

You really need to visit the neighborhoods and find a good fit.

I realize it is a cosmopolitan city .. Chick thing was just in keeping with my nature.. As big Doug said, my kid is the primary factor ...

trying to figure the logistics/ schedule out... Id need at least 8 days or so/ mo to see her back here.

Lastly: lakeview. I know it's "boys town" etc. Company has a very nice condo on halsted - 3232 ? Is this a decent spot for a mickle aged hetero for a year or so ?

I would add Lakeview to the list. That's a very large neighborhood, proximity to transportation, downtown, lakefront, walking distance to pretty much anything he could need/want, and he'd get more for his money than in a place like LP.

I agree on the owning vs renting, house vs. condo thing. That will make a big difference. And it depends what kind of living environment he wants. Middle of the action vs. quiet tree lined street (though many of the places listed pretty much offer both).

There's "Lakeview" and then there is "Boystown".

3232 N Halsted is solidly in "Boystown". The main concern I would have with that location is the street noise and parking. Lots of bars in close proximity make the area busy and noisy on the weekends.

On the upside, it is close to the el, close to the lake.

That condo is definitely in boys town, but it's close to a ton of stuff that is not geared to that particular leaning. If you're not a homophobe, it would be a great place to start. I was looking at a condo over there before I bought mine.

Only issues - parking and getting to work. The buses to downtown are a short walk (to the lakeshore), the train is a bit more of a walk...though you could take the belmont bus over to the station. That's what I do.

My only hesitation with Lakeview (and to a lesser extent Lincoln Park, Bucktown, etc) is that the party scene might wear thin on someone in their 40's. This can vary widely from one street/block to the next.

Lakeview can mean a lot of things. For instance, Roscoe/Racine is going to be a lot different than Clark/Belmont, and they're only a few blocks away from each other.
Same with Lincoln Park. Southport/Wrightwood going to have a completely different feel than Clark/Fullerton.

Exactly...he can still be in one of the nicer neighborhoods and be on a totally quiet tree lined street, while being only a short walk to all that's going on.

Or, of course, he can get a place that's in the middle of what's going on.

  • If you are taking the role as a consultant rather than an employee especially if it is PE related, the time investment will be great and the opportunity to be with your daughter would be less than you think. Personally, I wouldn't do it. Pretty much the reason why I quit being a consultant.

I live in Chicago and love it, but I would rather live elsewhere if the decision was the city or proximity to my kids.
