  • North Dallas is a great place to live. However, driving from North Dallas (Frisco,
Plano, etc.) to Arlington would be a nightmare.

  • If you are working in Arlington, Southlake would also be an idea spot... however, any commute is a nightmare in rush hour. With that said, Plano west of Alma is a an very ideal spot for a family. Frisco is nice as well, so is Allan and Little Elm. But the commute to Arlington is long and cost about 10 bucks round trip on the tolls.

So, I turned the position down in St. Louis, but now have an opportunity in Arlington/Dallas, TX. I have heard north end of Dallas is a good place. Not too familiar with the area at all, any suggestions on where to look when we go visit next week?

If you will be working in Arlington, you could live near downtown Dallas in Uptown (mostly apartments), lower Greenville (older, small houses) or there are a lot of converted buildings with lofts/condos/apartments downtown. You could also live in Ft Worth which had a great downtown.

You may want to post your question on the DFW MSU Alumni Facebook page too as a lot of the more recent transplants are active on the site.

THIS. There are nice locations and neighborhoods in Arlington, in Grand Prairie, and in H-E-B, Hurst-Euless-Bedford. That would put you in closer proximity to the job in Arlington, and believe me, that matters here with the morning commute. If you're looking for upscale, try Southlake. I live in Plano and the school system is great, but the commute would be a killer.

  • No way in hell would I live in Plano/Frisco and work in Arlington. Uptown or downtown Dallas might work. Easy commute and good nightlife. Uptown has more nightlife, but it can be douchey.

Nope. I drive from Plano to Grand Prairie once a week, Sundays, which 50 minute...one way... commute using DNT, I35E and I30. With traffic, I assume it will be double or maybe triple time. Keep that in mind.

As much as I love Plano, if I had to commute to anyplace along I-30 during rush hour, I would stay closer to the city. However, since you have to look at schools, that will have to weigh in your decision as well. Southlake and Plano have some of the best public schools in the state.

  • I lived in Frisco for a year and had to commute down the Dallas North Tollway to 635 west to 35E south. If I left by 6:30 AM my commute was 25 minutes. If I left after 7:30 it would be an hour or more. Same thing going home in the afternoon, if I got out after 3:30 I would just hit the gym for a few hours. Basically I was just never home during the week because either I was either stuck in traffic or avoiding it.

I loved it in Frisco. When we lived there the entire town was brand new. It's away from the city and had literally everything you would ever need.

  • I'm on the NE side, but I believe grapevine & Coppel could also be good options.

On Thursday the company I work for was bought buy a competitor. I now have to find a new job. I got a call yesterday from one of our other competitors, and they want to bring me and wife to St. Louis to discuss a possible job in St. Louis. The wife and I are going to meet with them then spend a few days touring the town. For now we think we want to live in downtown St. Louis. We are late 20's, no kids. 3 dogs. We enjoy the night life scene and live an active lifestyle. What "district" downtown is a good one? What are alternatives to the downtown area? Any info on St. Louis woul be a great help.

Based on this information, Uptown/downtown Dallas is a great fit. Both have a lot of activity and for the most part are walkable.

Schools don't matter for you so stay out of the suburbs.

Why don't you just take GBT/161, if runs right in front of the local mega church?

Not sure, maybe Calvery? Which now that I think about has the Pastor that preached from a bed on the roof with his wife - so probably not your cup of tea...

If schools and neighborhoods matter to you, or will, look at Duncanville if you're going to be in GP. Their school band programs are extremely good, usually taking marching bands to State as well as sending players to All-State (indoor sit-down band stuff).

  • Bottom line, live close to wear you work if you do not like to commute or intend to use the DART light rail.

  • Thank you to everybody who gave serious advice. I got offered the job in Dallas and will be taking it. We have decided to live in West Village (just outside of Uptown) and found a nice apartment. Now I need to find some Spartans in Dallas because I will be there July 3oth and need to find a place to watch MSU football.

Any advice for places to go/things to do would be appreciated.

Thanks. Yea it will take some getting use to 100+ degree days, but luckily our apartment has a nice pool area.

  • Cool man. You'll like it here. West Village is a good area, right pretty much downtown Dallas. You'll have fun. It's just getting hot this week. Do you have to commute far to work? That's pretty much the most important part.
