If you want any diversity in the school districts I think Forest Hills Northern and East Grand Rapids would new your best bet.

huh If by diversity you mean other rich white people, yes.

    Calmer than you are

Back up the truck. You didn't mention that the position you were offered was Power Bottom. That changes EVERYTHING!!!

  • Also hoping for a job opportunity up that way but it's still early in the process.

I live in jenison. I have 3 young kids. Looking to move to nicer area.

That is still strange to me (but I agree).

I went to Jenison in the early-mid 90's. Back then, it was the stuck up snobby place to live. I moved in from Northview and it was really hard to get to know people because my dad wasn't rich and/or well known. When I would talk to people from other schools, they assumed I was stuck up because I went to Jenison.

Now, when I go back, I see all the people I went to HS with at Meijer and it is quite the sight to see. A far cry from the "rep" it had back in the day. It went from getting yelled at for mowing your lawn on Sunday and not going to the store in a T-shirt, to praying the people at Meijer have sleeves on their T-shirts in the course of 15-20 years.

  • Moved to GR last summer and live in Cascade (Forest Hills school district). Really like it here - great schools, close to lots of restaurants/stores on 28th St., 10 minutes to get downtown, 45 minutes to Grand Haven, not far from Ada (neat little town).

    I hate Illinois Nazis.

  • I live in Heritage Hill near the medical mile... Nice area. Especially if you love beer. I don't understand the perception of all the religious freaks... I haven't run into any. The only thing that annoys me is all the rescue missions downtown that attract a shit load of hobos. They need to move those... Otherwise, all is well.

Fanatically right wing, religious and very much hypocritical. Otherwise, my favorite area in Michigan to live and work on a daily basis. East Grand Rapids or private school (Catholic Central, GR Christian) is where RCMB'ers would normally go. RCMB'ers would definitely not live in Godwin Heights, Creston or Union school districts.

The is no Union school dstrict. Its part of GRPS.
Get a clue before posting advice about a place you don't know shit about.

    ps
EGR is full of ummies as are GR Catholic Central and GR Christian.

  • Grew up in white trash suburb of GR. If I moved back, I'd go with either someplace very nice (EGR) or get a house on a lake somewhere within a 30-40 minute drive of downtown. With all the lakes, there's really no sense settling for a bland suburb.

  • West Michigan is a great place to raise a family. I have 3 kids and love being here. I've had the chance to move to LA, Chicago, and the east coast for jobs, but everytime I way the pros and ccons and West Michigan wins out.

For your family, assuming schools are the primary driver where you want to locate I would consider the following areas (in no particular order)

    Byron Center
    Caledonia
    Forest Hills
    Rockford
    Jenison
    East Grand Rapids
Grand Rapids (not GRPS at this point, GR Christian or GR Catholic)

Expect to pay more for a house in distrcits like EGR and Forest Hills than you would in Byron Center and Caledonia. The area is remarkably easy to get around so factoring your commute time doesn't need to be a primary motivating factor. Figure 20-30 minutes to get from one end of the area to the other on any given day.

  • Forest Hills has some of the best public schools in the state. Caledonia is a great place to live 20 minutes from down town. Cascade is great, but houses there can be a little overpriced, in this market though you can still get a great deal. Ada has some beautiful areas too.

GR is a great city, the downtown area has developed tremendously and there is a lot to do. The city really supports the arts even though it's very conservative as a whole.

  • Close enough to Lake Michigan to make great day trips. But also close enough for lake effect snow.

Some winters it seemed like I was shoveling every few hours for days at a time.
