Tell me about Midland, MI

  • My bro went to Northwood. Minor league stadium is nice. I haven't been up there in a few years.

  • The legion hall is cool. They take their baseball very serious there. All 4 walls are decoratedwiyh their trophies 2 or 3 shelves high (greatest burger every Thursday night) . When all else fails there is the Boulevard. Yep, for the most part the night life sucks.

    oldgreentar1

  • they have a gay bar and the boulevard. the gay bar would be good for you.

    AMwood

  • Fricks bar used to have Schlitz on tap.

Now knowing what 1995 is like all over again! Thank you 247 technology!!

  • The "nightlife" is limited to Oscar's downtown... thats and Fricks are where you'll find the northwood students hanging out. Otherwise people typically party at Applebees, Logans, or B-Dubs (seriously).

If you want to get some good food... well, good luck. The best restaurant in town is Zinc, or its overpriced sister Table. Genji's is a pretty decent place if you like the Japanese Steakhouse thing, I've never had it but they supposedly have good sushi (of course, they're the only place that serves sushi so...). Pizza Sam's and Diamond Jim's are other "hangouts" downtown.

For breakfast I would recommend either Zinc (pricey) or Molly's Bistro... they have a really good corned beef omelete. There is another place called Shirlene's Cuisine that is pretty decent for breakfast if you're hung over.

Other "stuff" to do... uh... well, mmm... you can drive to Bay City and drink on the waterfront, they have some decent bars there... you can go to Dow Gardens and look at um, flowers. You can go to Mt. Pleasant and hit up the casino or the new indoor waterpark that is opening soon. You can go to Saginaw and... lol just kidding, stay the fuck away from Saginaw. As people mentioned, you can go check out the Tridge but unless you've never been on a bridge before you'll probably find it somewhat lame. Do you golf? There is quite a bit of golf in the area.

  • Cruise over to Bay City...there's a bunch of bars on Midland Street for the kids.

    Hertz

  • Oh, couple more... Midland Brewery has some decent beers though its entirely in the wrong location. Go get ice cream at Great Lakes Ice Cream, good stuff there (Midland Brewery is next door to Cottage Creamery, which is good too, but not as good). If you're into the "out doors" stuff you can drop a canoe in the Tittabawasee or take a bike ride on the Pere Marquette Trail... both are actually pretty cool for that type of thing. There are a bunch of little museums and stuff that could be good for killing time and generally expand your knowledge of things everyone else will find useless. Midland tagged itself as the "City of Modern Explorers" so... go explore.

  • In 2009, Midland, MI was voted Tennis Town, USA...

    st81976

  • I'm glad I'm out of there. Now that I have school aged children I respect Midland more as it is a great family town, but nothing for somebody your age. If I were you after the game I'd either drive to Mt. Pleasant to go to the casino, or drive down to East Lansing.

    Buzzer Beater

  • Massive secret undeground sex club under the tridge. Pw and handshake get you in.

  • Big E's is actually a decent place. It is a newer sports bar over by the mall. They have quite a few beers on tap. I was there a couple weeks ago and pleasantly surprised that they had Golden Cap and Two Hearted on tap. They told me they were getting in a keg of Hopslam. That reminds me I need to go check and see if they got it in.

The tri-city area (Saginaw, Bay City, Midland) honestly doesn't have much to do. Bay City has Midland street with a lot of bars but mostly young kids there. The beach in bay city is actually pretty nice. There are quite a few golf courses and disc golf courses if you like either of those. Midland does have a pretty competitive summer soccer league if you like soccer. I play in it and it is a lot of fun (I live in Saginaw).

  • Despite the good times in bay city, midland does have one great disc golf course. Extremely challenging. Food choices are good. Not understanding the hate unless your use to all 5 star joints.

I would say Midland's disc golf course isn't near as good as other ones around, but it is something to do.

Frankenmuth > Mt. Pleasant > Sanford > Freeland > St. Charles > Midland

Frankenmuth actually put in brand new cement tee pads and is one of the better courses on this side of the state.
When Saginaw's course is completed, I would put it ahead of Freeland and possibly ahead of Sanford.

I grew up in Saginaw and tWife grew up in Midland. We (unfortunately) visit regularly, and are headed up again this weekend.

Good call on the Midland Brewery. I've been impressed by their beers and typically get a growler when I'm in town. It's an okay place to hang out, but is a little granola. Last time I went, they had decent live music. Other than that, Oscar's is okay. If you like to pop your collar and fight, Bay City is for you. Last time I went it was pretty depressing. Old Town Saginaw is also okay, but not worth going out of your way.

Haven't been to Soaring Eagle in like 10 years. Table minimums used to be $2. That was awesome for an 18 year old. Now you are lucky to find a $5 table, and for that you have to wait. Terrible payout % on the slots.

Great places to grow up, but shitty for the 18+ crowd.

Not sure where you're staying but I'd recommend Ashman Court....Which I think is called "The H" now. It can be had on priceline by restricting the search to the highest star level for the area, as it is the highest rated.

  • I live in Midland... It is a town full of engineers and scientist but fun can be found in some places. Don't expect to see any cute girls.... my buddies and i have developed a downgraded scale for judging women after we were all ruined by the beauty at MSU...

    Drinking and nightlife:
In Midland Big E's, Oscars, Fricks (not a big fan, but Northwood students do go there)
In Saginaw Hamilton Street is alright but stay away from everywhere else because its pretty hood
In Bay City go to Midland Street... older crowd at times but best we have to offer.

    Things to do:
Midland is pretty much broken down to 3 things... Chemical Plants, Parks, or Homes... seems like most of the city is a park so if you enjoy being outside there are alot of parks. Dow Diamond for games is great because you can get bombed then go to Oscars or Diamond Jims after the game (short walk).

I would agree with your comments on Big E's - great place for scenery, beer and food. Oh yeah, and sports, too! My gf and I lucked out the last time that we were in there and it was 'Meet the Brewer' night with Bell's folks in the house passing out free stuff and an extended lineup of Bell's draft and bottle beer.

Big e's is decent. I went to an Arcadia thing there once... Lots of tv's, food is pretty okay. Prefer bdubs though.
