Tell me about RV rentals (Michigan)

  • Looking to head up north from some golf and relaxing this fall.

Anyone rent an RV? How'd it go?

    Brodson

  • Stay down south, we don't like your kind up here.

  • Just get a room at Motel 6. Sleeping in one of those things sucks.

GOTTA agree....either that or bring a decent airbed....more importantly: did you bang any of those smokin' hot aussie synchronized swimmers yet Lochte?

You can stay in Four Seasons Hotels anywhere you go for what you pay , lose in depreciation, fuel, upkeep, and so on having one of them, plus they are zero fun to drive in traffic

My parents are currently researching to buy an RV. They have rented a few of them and included me and my sister on their adventures. It is an absolute blast.

The size of the RV you rent depends on how many people you have going and what you feel comfortable driving. The first time we rented an RV it was a 28 ft. Class C. Fit four people pretty comfortably for a long weekend and drove more like a truck than a bus.

    Where'd you rent from?

  • Yes, renting is worse, you don't know what your doing driving them, will forget you have 6 gallons of hot water, and even a mild fart stinks up the whole coach.
Fine to sit on a lot in Florida for the winter for a poor ish blue hair..... But otherwise...

Sorry, can't help you there. Live in Florida. Haven't had any experience renting in Michigan. I can tell you that a lot of places down here will only rent for a full week. Finding places that will rent for a long weekend can be tricky.

yeah, that's what I'm seeing, but there are a few that will do a long weekend

I wouldn't let too many people scare you away from the idea. It is a lot of fun. My family was stuck in traffic on on US41 in the Everglades and we had the RV in park. My dad was able to take a bathroom break while we switched drivers. Grabbed a beer from the fridge and decided to hang out in the back.

I would make sure you find a campground with full RV hookups. Dry camping is not something I would try with as a noob. Also think about how you are going to get around once you arrive. Once the RV is parked, it is pretty much parked. Too much hassle to unhook the sewage lines to run up to the store.

thanks man! I've done it a few times before probably 10+ years ago and enjoyed it.

    This.

I have an aunt and uncle who bought a big RV, had plans to see the country. They did make one big trip to Alaska, and they tried to pretend it was a great experience at first, then admitted it sucked balls. They could have flown first class, hired personal assistants to wait on them, and been money ahead. Not to mention the sheer boredome day after day of driving a gas guzzling behemoth 55 MPH for thousands of miles.

Then they decided they'd take it to Texas in the winters. They did that twice, and put the thing up for sale (3 years ago, still no takers). They bought a lot in some Texas RV-O-Rama type place near the border and are buying some kind of double wide, and driving a car down from now on. It sounds like another horrible purchase decision to me, but at least fears of cartel violence keeps things interesting.

Financially, the RV purchase has been a huge bust, even when you don't account for the fuel costs which are significant. They literally have not moved it in over 2 years. I think they must owe more than they can sell it for , which isn't where you want to be when you're retired.

  • Rodeo.....
    Yes.....
People don't realize they really should be stored inside, as the roofs can leak and are a pain when they get 5 years old or more.
Take up a lot of room, pain to service because somebody has to follow you and take you back to get it as well. Dealing with sewer water if you can't dump it where you stay, you name it, it's a pain in the arseage.
Glad having one is in my rear view mirror
Paid 40 for mine, used, had it 3 years and was tickled to get 23.5 out of it

    I've owned a 34 ft. class A for several years. I wouldn't change a thing.

They are not for everyone, obviously, but a lot of people own one - and they don't stay parked/idle.

Actually most people that buy them do let them sit a lot
Hundreds of 10 year old ones around with 30 or 40 thousand miles on them.
They can be fun for a while, but it gets old, did for me anyhow. I like long hot showers and the ability to be mobile when I get somewhere... But each to his own

Yeah, it's a niche market for sure. re: mobility - we rent a vehicle. A couple of years ago I came across a stat that said 3% of Americans owned a motorhome. If accurate, I would say that the stat supports your overall point.

  • You seem like an idiot in general but I'll give you advice anyway.

    Rent from General RV.

We have rented RVs twice for various MSU road trips. The first time we rented from Cruise America. It seemed fine.

The second time (for Nebraska last year) we rented from General. It was almost damn spanking brand new and a beautiful rig. 10x nicer than the Cruise America vehicle. Both were Class Cs and around 30 feet.

Class C is nice because it has the bed above the cab and drives very much like a conversion van with some extra weight. I think the Class A (like a tour bus) might even require a special license and they generally don't sleep as many people as there is no bed above the cab.

    Have fun.

  • Class A don't require a special license
Bed above cab is ultra cramped and not my idea as a middle aged guy of a fun place to sleep more than maybe one night, especially with someone
More than 4 people in any of them is a crowd

With the Class Cs, there is a Queen bedroom in the back. Other beds are usually twin bunks or the couch and/or kitchen table turn into twins.

The bed above the cab is actually pretty damn spacious. I've claimed it on both of my trips and been pretty happy with it. I'm a pretty big guy (6'1, 225) and I'm not young (35). Did not bring wife. If you have a woman with you, definitely claim the back bedroom.
