edit: Tell me about Dallas, TX (GOT THE JOB!)

  • On Thursday the company I work for was bought buy a competitor. I now have to find a new job. I got a call yesterday from one of our other competitors, and they want to bring me and wife to St. Louis to discuss a possible job in St. Louis. The wife and I are going to meet with them then spend a few days touring the town. For now we think we want to live in downtown St. Louis. We are late 20's, no kids. 3 dogs. We enjoy the night life scene and live an active lifestyle. What "district" downtown is a good one? What are alternatives to the downtown area? Any info on St. Louis woul be a great help.

  • I'm from there, but I haven't lived there since I was 5 and that was 20 years ago. I have family who live in the suburbs, though, and they like it. I can't say anything for downtown.

  • If you like the Midwest, you'll like STL. Personally (and especially with dogs) I'd live in any number of south city neighborhoods before downtown. Soulard, Lafayette Square, Tower Grove Park area neighborhoods and Dogtown would all be solid choices. Central West End is great too as long as you feel like you've got a secure off-street parking option. Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions.

As luck would have it, I also have a row house for sale or rent 1 block from a dog park that's perfect for a young couple (my wife and I lived there until an expanding family made us move to a bigger place). It's in Compton Heights in between Tower Grove and Lafayette Sq areas.

  • I'm not sure that downtown will be the place you will end up - though there is a lot of gentrification going on. Someplace like Soulard or Lafayette square might be cool. The U-city area might be the more established locale for the hip and young with no kids. For folks who grew up in St. Louis, nothing exists outside the 270 beltway (or 170 for that matter). So they settle down in Kirkwood, Webster, Clayton, etc. It seems like most immigrants like my wife and I end up in West County (beyond the beltway) - your typical middle class suburban bedroom communities with mall shopping. I apologize in advance for the following simple and, no doubt wrong, analysis - Downtown closes @ 5, has crime and typical big city (ineffective) government. Head N - ghetto. Head E - ghetto. Head S - blue collar. Head W -> rich (Ladue, Town & Country) then middle class.

The political lay of the land is that the city, like most, is short on cash and high on crime. The money is all in W. county and the city is desperate to merge with St. Louis county to get their hands on the cash. So far the county has wanted nothing to do with it. Most of the development is outside 270 and into St. Charles county to the West. Those place are developing like crazy and have very nice everything - except too much cookie cutter shopping, and endless subdivisions, etc. We love it out here - but I got my city living out of my blood when I spent 5 years in Chicago. Now I'm happy that all my neighbors have nice grass and my kid can walk the neighborhood in safety.

There is plenty good about St. Louis. My biggest complaint after 20+ years here is the lack of water recreation that I took for granted as a kid.

That's typical of folks who move in from Utah, where it is a local custom. They quickly learn to use Chinese takeout containers as is the custom here.

  • As a Tigers fan, I hate that town.

Their Cardinals spoiled the 2006 World Series. Bob Gibson and the Cardinals took the Tigers to 7 games in 1968 and held a 3-1 lead until Lolich saved the series for the Tigers. The 1934, the Cardinals beat the Tigers in 7 in the World Series.

  • Moved to Clayton this past summer (from Michigan) and absolutely love this area and the city as a whole. I will second the nominations for U-City, Tower Grove, and Kirkwood. There's a ton to do on this side of the city, especially in and around Forrest Park.

  • highly recommend central west end. Live near Maryland plaza. Lots of good places to eat and party. Downtown is a 10 buck cab ride, Clayton and the loop are close. Crime is low and people are nice, I lived there for 2 years. Still in the area if you want more info message me.

I will not speak with certainty, since I haven't been to a baseball game in St. Louis, but based on your stupid analysis in the last thread here that I visited, I highly doubt the atmosphere is better than Fenway.

    The truth hurts.

Boston fans are senile, drunk assholes. Cardinal fans are classy and smart. Fenway is like hanging out at the big house. Too annoying to enjoy the game.

I'm not a great fan of the game, so I won't enter a debate about Fenway. There is no question, however, that STL is a baseball town. The new park is nice; parking for the game is easy and safe. The team wins more than it's share and win or lose the fans show up in droves - nearly all of them dressed in team colors. The baseball atmosphere is like something from the past... families, dad's with little girls on their shoulders, etc. Compared to what I've seen in other cities, baseball in STL seems to have preserved the essence of the experience.

It also seems that the players like it here. Folks seem to give them their space and treat them like anybody else. I once saw Ozzie Smith loading a box into his car at the local best buy - nobody was hounding him, just letting him get on with his day. Another time I was eating lunch at one of the local Greek churches and Bob Costas came in. Nobody said a word to him. He and a buddy just sat down at one of the big tables alongside everybody else and ate lunch.

  • So, I turned the position down in St. Louis, but now have an opportunity in Arlington/Dallas, TX. I have heard north end of Dallas is a good place. Not too familiar with the area at all, any suggestions on where to look when we go visit next week?
