Tell me about Wayne State

  • Is it a good place to go to grad school?

Quone, to quone something. Like a patient gets difficult you quone them.

  • what for? medicine & law are great... i think engineering, too.

  • I have several friends who went to Wayne State, both for undergrad and grad school. It depends on what program you're looking into. Despite being located near some sketchy areas, Wayne State is a good school that's very highly regarded within the state.

Cass Corridor is light years better (safer) than it was 15 years ago. All of Detroit is somewhat "sketchy" but the WSU surrounding area isn't bad.

  • Echoing what everyone else has said, for law and med school, you can't go wrong. Campus itself is nice, surrounding areas not so much, but nowhere near the bad perception/rep that it receives.

  • Wayne State has a nice reputation for the Midwest and Michigan (obviously). Love our med school. Unless you're a stellar candidate coming out of the graduate school, don't plan on moving out west or east. Just not well known to those areas.

In regards to living...there are some great apartments downtown in Cass Corridor. I think for our class its 1/3 downtown, 1/3 Royal Oak/Ferndale, 1/3 everywhere else.

This is the same play they ran earlier, turn the corner and look. Nice back door. Cleaves the alley-oop. Ohh! What a setup off the timeout!

There's really nothing that could be considered a "sketchy area" close to campus these days.

Ok, I haven't been on campus in several years. I just remember a lot of bums and abandoned-looking buildings. Admittedly, Detroit kind of scares the hell out of me.

    Final Countdown

  • Med School there from 93-97. It worked out great for me.

Cass corridor was an absolute shithole back then. I'll take the word of those that have been there recently that it has been cleaned up. Haven't been near there in a decade.

  • Med school '13 here....it's an ok place, dont know what you're looking for, but I get to do stuff at HFH and DMC that noone else in the country got to do as a MSIII....
Midtown is actually a really fun place, and I know I'll miss it at times this year (moved up to ferndale. )

  • I'm currently in law school there. I think the program is great, I think the area is great. But I must say, Wayne state may be the most disorganized institution I've ever been associated with. Grades are slow to come back, their enrollment system is terrible, it takes them forever to do simple maintenance like turning on or off or fixing the heat, and, at least within the law school, administrative coordination is pretty suspect. All that said, I think I am getting a very good education.

All the people they have working for them are lazy and stoned. Getting Wayne State'd sucks, but it's sort of a rite of a passage. I've never had them screw something up so bad I couldn't get it figured out.

(anyone else remember those commercials in the 90's?)

I bust that song out all the time. I have no idea why, but it's stuck with me for years.

  • started off MBA there, spent 3 semesters...good instructors. i didn't finish there because i decided to move and now you can guess where i attend.

  • You'll get a good education there, but the school brand is not valued outside the state, unfortunately. Don't attend if you need the degree to get you a job at a new firm.

    Buyer beware...

I experienced the same disorganization when I was there.
I think that the university has become a stepping stone for a lot of peoples careers and the lack of staying power is taking its toll on the school.

Frank Wu was my dean - and I knew from the moment I met him that I would be surprised if he saw me graduate. He was there from 2004-2008.
David Moran served as interim dean during 2008. Then he took off to UofM - and Moran was an institution at Wayne State.

Yet as an institution its still responsible for putting out a lot of successful graduates that are still practicing within the state.

My daughter might do her residency at Henry Ford. She'd start in the summer of 2013. The residency would last 5 years. Where would you recommend that she live? No, I won't post pictures.

Definetly a live Midtown discount area. Jonna lofts have some great places, just moved from New Amsterdam. Park shelton is great too. A number of really nice places downtown near grand circus, but not sure if there are incentives there. HFH has an apartment tower that is right on campus and is dirt cheap too.

There are lots of Wayne State alumni in Ohio and Illinois as well. How far the school's reputation extends really depends on your degree. If you're going into scientific research, Wayne State is very well recognized and respected nationally.

It's unfortunate they kept the name Wayne State all of these years. Nobody knows where the heck it is outside of Michigan, and that's a shame because it is one of the only four decent public universities in the state of Michigan.
