Tell me about brain tumors

  • Just found out today that my cousin, who is like a brother to me, has two. Have not found out if malignant or benign, or where they are, as he's in for testing. He's had migraines for a few months now, and this explains them. Anyone had experience with either friend/family/self? On a scale of 1-to-playing in traffic, how concerned should I be? TIA.

Its very concerning and will probably be tough for a while, so making sure he has the right physicians (i.e. NOT Olin) goes a long way. Also, don't listen to what everyone else has to say about it because quite frankly, if they're not a licensed physician, they probably don't know anything and will just stress you and your family out.

lol Thank you. This provided some well-needed comic relief in this situation. No, he has good doctors. Beaumont in Royal Oak. Definitely not Olin haha.

  • Im sorry to hear about your cousin. There is good news: There has been significant progress made over the past 20 years in treating and extending life for all but those people with the most severe tumors. Unfortunately, my dad was dealt a bad hand and died of a grade 4 glioblastoma. He was given 6 months and lived seven. His doctors at RO Beaumont were great despite the end result. I'll keep good thoughts for your cousin.

If they are malignant, it sucks. Have a close family member battling advanced brain cancer. Location, size, and stage of the tumor will have a large impact on procedures/treatments/outlook.

While this is clearly good advice for the most part, don't ever just blindly trust a board certified physician just because they have the title 'M.D.' and you don't. Don't be afraid to question them and trust your gut--and, at times--your own independent research.

No matter what, it still comes down to the fact that it's just a job for them. Ask yourself how many times have you had a bad day at work or been wrong in your job, no matter how good you are at your job. It's the same for them, they arn't magical, God-like beings, despite what some of them believe.

Let me start by saying that I am a licensed physician and I totally agree with the poster that said to ask questions and make sure he has the right doctors before anything is done surgically.

With regard to the tumors, it could be anything from a benign mass that could be removed if it is causing mass effect on the brain or left in if it isn't to a malignant parenchymal tumor which will be a life altering experience. The gamut of diagnoses is so large it isn't a good idea to speculate until you have more information.

They know, but I do not. I know the incision was made back-right quarter of the head. Past that, I haven't been privy to much precise detail.

  • I work with someone who had a brain tumor removed years ago. She is completely normal and one of the brighter people I work with and you'd never know she had gone through something like that unless she decided to tell you. Best wishes.

  • An update, and a little inspiration on this humpday.

He is done with his first round of chemo and has begun a new job as a labtech at a prominent SE MI hospital! All seems to be going very well at this point. Thankful for modern medicine and the great medical team he had at Beaumont. Thanks for any/all support.

sorry to hear that.. bad news.. my thoughts are with your family..

for what it's worth - my Mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor a year ago this week - and she died about 8 weeks ago...

(probably not the news you wanted.. lol .. as you probably know by now, some varieties are more treatable than others. As other folks here have mentioned, I would make certain that your cousin demands the treatment he needs...)..

LOL...Thanks, Bob. Hoping his situation continues to go well.

I have a close relative that was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor a couple months ago. We initially thought he may have had a stroke, but the quick escalation in his symptoms - plus trouble breathing one morning - prompted a trip to the ER where it was discovered. He had an operation to remove as much of the tumor as possible and is now ending his chemotherapy. We're basically taking it a day at a time, but so far he's doing about as well as one could hope.

We used Beaumont and I have to also compliment how professional and gracious they have been with my family. The doctor has been wonderful and I would recommend their neurology department to anyone.

  • The bookkeeper for our firm has a 29 year old niece that had a tumor removed yesterday. She is doing well. One of our daughters friends (6 years old) had a tumor removed two years ago. She is doing well as well. Both were benign. As long as the tumor is benign the prognosis is usually very good. If the tumor is malignant your family is in for a long and painful ride that usually will not have a good ending.

Good luck to you and your relative. Truly hoping that it is benign.

Should have clarified this. There were actually two tumors and IIRC, both were malignant. Removed all of the main tumor, but did not remove smaller offshoot tumor due to possible motor skills impairment. Hence chemo and radiation. Keeping fingers crossed.
