Tell the youngbloods about Carl Banks

  • Loose Stools said...

Saw Van Pelt play at SS, and played basketball with after he went pro (hell of a baller, btw). Otto Smith was pre-Carl Banks and was a badass (not too bright earning the name, "Toe"). I remember listening to the game when Eric "the Flea" Allen set the record for single game rushing, 350 yards against Purdue, 1971. I was there when Gibson ran down the cat who intercepted the pass and had a 20 yard headstart. I can't remember all the details, but Darryl Rogers said once it was the most amazing play he's ever seen.

    Just a little history.

Favorite play I ever witnessed in person--TJ's winning touchdown against UM.

Was at that game as well. 1978 vs Indiana I believe. Amazing, Gibson was like a bullet shot out of a gun!

Not to take away from the thread, but I grew up in West Lansing and there was a "super fan" whose banghead name escapes me (he was renown). I am certain that he had VHS of every one of the "probation year" games broadcast at midnight on WKAR. I have long wanted those to make it to YouTube. I don't even know if the guy is still living. He had the original MSU basement man-cave that I got to see once. Jack Ebling would probably know exactly who I'm talking about.

First name Vern seems to ring a bell.

Two stories stand out for me:

    1) rumor has it ( I did not witness it) that during the annual Brody-south complex snowball fight someone threw one at his Jag he had parked outside north case hall. He was said to jump out his window (2nd floor) and pound the guy who did it

    2) I met him once after a few years in the pros and I asked him the difference between college and pro football. He said that in college about 2 plays a game feel like being in a car accident whereas every play in the nfl feels like that.

As noted above, he was better than Greg Jones. And although LT got all the press for the Giants, some would argue he was more important.

I actually saw #1. It wasn't outside Brody, it was outside Wilson. Between East Wilson and East Holden. He was driving his car, and it got hit by a snowball. It's been alot of years, but I don't think it was a Jag, I think it was a Camaro.

Carl stopped his car, and walked up to the group of guys who were out there throwing snowballs. I was a few hundred feet from it, so I didn't hear what was said, but Carl pummeled the guy he thought did it. Rumor floating around afterward is it was the wrong guy. The guy who actually hit his car with the snowball left his friend out to dry.

I was visiting a high school friend in Wilson at the time, and lived elsewhere, so I never really got the dirt on how that panned out.

Would love to see those again. State set a record for margin of victory in 78. Loved watching smith, brammer, byrd, lightbulb howard, bass, et al. Had season tickets that year while in hs, but would religiously watch Jim Adams on the replay.

Yes. Worst possible ban I could think of at that point in NCAA history. Whole different history thread on the whys, but let's say, I keep a special place of hate in my heart for tOSU.

  • I went to the away nd game that Teague won in overtime and after a few put on my banks jersey. Had a 60 something nd fan come up to me and tell me Carl banks was the best football player he ever saw. He said no question "absolute beast on the field".

This was an extremely low moment for Banks. He came off like an asshole. The guy should have sued him........if he didn't.

  • Carl and Tim Cunningham were very close. Inseparable. Timmy went to Everett with my brother, so I met Carl through Timmy. He is a great guy. Incredibly humble, yet absolutely scary at the same time. His hands were like bigass slabs of meat, and when he shook my hand, it was swallowed up in his massive hand.

I met him in 82-ish. I saw him again a few years later, after he had been with the Giants for a couple years, and he recognized me. He said "Hey Everett!!" hahah. Didnt remember my name at first, but remembered my face and how he knew me. He stood there chatting with me for about a half hour.

Incredibly good dude, and one of the fiercest college linebackers I have ever seen.

Yeah, I was thinking it was Indiana. I remember thinking as I watching the guy running, "that cat is gone," and all of a sudden--out of nowhere--Gibson nails the guy. And, it wasn't some poosie ankle tackle, it was "today you die" tackle. It was a shocking thing to see--one of those plays that stays with you for life.

It was 1978, but I think it was the Minnesota game. Indiana was the game Eddie Smith had 369 yards passing. An MSU record until Bill Burke burned um for 400 in 1999. That was the year of the TV ban. Didn't even show highlights of Eddie's performance on whatever college football recap show ABC had then, just a still picture of him while mentioning it. Can you imagine that happening today?

Yes. Only time they were on TV that year was at USC. Channel 6 broadcast it with a 90 min. delay.
