Saw Van Pelt play at SS, and played basketball with after he went pro (hell of a baller, btw). Otto Smith was pre-Carl Banks and was a badass (not too bright earning the name, "Toe"). I remember listening to the game when Eric "the Flea" Allen set the record for single game rushing, 350 yards against Purdue, 1971. I was there when Gibson ran down the cat who intercepted the pass and had a 20 yard headstart. I can't remember all the details, but Darryl Rogers said once it was the most amazing play he's ever seen.
Just a little history.
Favorite play I ever witnessed in person--TJ's winning touchdown against UM.

Not to take away from the thread, but I grew up in West Lansing and there was a "super fan" whose
name escapes me (he was renown). I am certain that he had VHS of every one of the "probation year" games broadcast at midnight on WKAR. I have long wanted those to make it to YouTube. I don't even know if the guy is still living. He had the original MSU basement man-cave that I got to see once. Jack Ebling would probably know exactly who I'm talking about.
First name Vern seems to ring a bell.

Two stories stand out for me:
1) rumor has it ( I did not witness it) that during the annual Brody-south complex snowball fight someone threw one at his Jag he had parked outside north case hall. He was said to jump out his window (2nd floor) and pound the guy who did it
2) I met him once after a few years in the pros and I asked him the difference between college and pro football. He said that in college about 2 plays a game feel like being in a car accident whereas every play in the nfl feels like that.
As noted above, he was better than Greg Jones. And although LT got all the press for the Giants, some would argue he was more important.

I actually saw #1. It wasn't outside Brody, it was outside Wilson. Between East Wilson and East Holden. He was driving his car, and it got hit by a snowball. It's been alot of years, but I don't think it was a Jag, I think it was a Camaro.
Carl stopped his car, and walked up to the group of guys who were out there throwing snowballs. I was a few hundred feet from it, so I didn't hear what was said, but Carl pummeled the guy he thought did it. Rumor floating around afterward is it was the wrong guy. The guy who actually hit his car with the snowball left his friend out to dry.
I was visiting a high school friend in Wilson at the time, and lived elsewhere, so I never really got the dirt on how that panned out.

Yeah, I was thinking it was Indiana. I remember thinking as I watching the guy running, "that cat is gone," and all of a sudden--out of nowhere--Gibson nails the guy. And, it wasn't some poosie ankle tackle, it was "today you die" tackle. It was a shocking thing to see--one of those plays that stays with you for life.
