Testing a new lens, yay or nay?

  • Not sure how I feel about some of these pictures, but the lens was only about $100, I'm thinking it was more user error. What say you tRCMB?

  • Not bad, but you'd think for $100, it would at least show some nips.

If it were a $300+ lens we would need to see bush.

Monday's game. After looking through some of the pictures, I was a little disappointed. I was just trying to follow the rules, and post pics.

What is it, a 50mm? Just a guess on price. It's at its best when opened up a little more and/or used on closer subjects.

75 - 300mm. Pictures were taken from half way up in the Arena, top of the lower bowl more or less.

Probably not much user error. That lens is pretty weak in terms of image quality, but if you just want to extend your reach occasionally for fun, it might still be worth it.

  • Something is wrong with it.

It added 15lbs to the (former) hottie at the farthest left of the 1st pic.

It also shrunk the boobs in the 2nd pic. I would return it.

  • For that price I am guessing a variable aperture lens that is probably around f/5.6 when fully zoomed. Great in daylight but restrictive when used indoors without additional light/flash/strobe. A 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is going to set you back around $1800-$2000 for Nikon/Canon. You can buy third-party lenses from Sigma, Tokina, etc for a bit less but not as sharp, imho.

The images aren't that bad. You could try noise reduction and sharpening the photos a bit with some software.

Well I had to sneak the lens into the Arena, and a lens that you are talking about they won't allow in, I think I know which it is. I do have some shots I really like taken outdoors and focusing on objects on the ground. What is a good lens for taking pictures from a distance?

What is the make/model of your camera? I can only speak to Nikon since that is what I use. The 70-200mm f/2.8 is definitely a beefy lad and certainly not small. I wasn't aware arenas could limit the type of lens brought into the facility.

Canon t3. I was surprised the first time I went and tried to get in the lens, it is only about 5 or 6 inches but the security said anything over 6 inches connected to the body wasn't allowed in during games. Next game hid it in the bottom of the baby bag and they never even looked or cared, so I'm guessing it has more to do with who is at security.

So zero RCMBers are allowed in that arena?

    Interesting policy at AA arena!

I would think you could crank the ISO on the camera (rated to 6400 iso) to 1600 and get the 70-300mm lens ($400 on Amazon) that you'd be fine for indoor use. The lens is less than 6" in length so that would fall within the AA policy.

    Hope this helps!

This is wayyyy more lenient than Breslin's policy. I worked on the Production Staff at Breslin and the camera policy there is "if it looks professional, it isn't allowed." We were told any lens attached to the camera was a professional lens and had to be returned to their vehicle or checked at guest services.
