Texas water causing my high blood pressure?

  • Seemed farfetched, but it's looking more and more likely the source of my high bp is due to the insane amount of sodium in the Austin city water. Haven't drunk city water in awhile, and my bp remains normal. Start drinking city water, bp rises to insane levels.

Yes, cool story bro. But I'm kinda stunned, especially I didn't have no problem until I moved here.

Water Filters That Remove Sodium | eHow.com

Water Filters That Remove Sodium. Though many types of water filters and purification systems are available, only certain systems will remove sodium from drinking water. Activated carbon filters, which are used in the carafe-style and faucet-mounted filters that make up a significant portion of the retail filter market, do not filter sodium and...

  • It seems highly unlikely that the sodium in the water is what's causing your high blood pressure. I would guess that it is other areas of your life and you may be changing them as well when you're paying attention to your tap water intake due to sodium. I guess if everything else checks out then maybe it's contributing. If you do see that you're having high blood pressure on and off I would definitely recommend getting a blood pressure cuff and start monitoring it daily or every couple of days. High blood pressure can be curbed by diet/exercise but for some people that might not cut it and there are very effective medications that help out easily. High BP can lead to some very major problems in the future.
Oh and if you ARE the BBQ thread guy like somewhat else was saying... there is a LOT of sodium in BBQ usually.

  • By the way if you cut out city water make sure you are getting some type of fluoride for your teeth. No one likes a dude with rotted out teeth.

  • Increased sodium intake-> increased blood volume -> increased blood pressure. Still, probably not the thing causing the majority of the problem, but physiologically possible.

  • Definitely a possibility. There have been a ton of links between hyperaldosteronism (condition where you essentially retain sodium) and high blood pressure. I was just learning about this in a class yesterday, actually. It's pretty vague and there are a lot of conditions that could allow this to happen in one way or another, though.

increased sodium -> increased bllod volume -> less renin -> less aldosterone and ADH --> and you would excrete the excess volume and sodium.

It shouldn't happen if you are physiologically "normal".

Sodium definitely contributes but I think the question is whether the sodium is coming from the city water and causing it. Prepackaged food has an absurd amount of sodium in it. It's more likely that he is getting takeout food or packaged food with a lot of sodium in it in my opinion.

If he is having a problem it is obviously not "normal"

    Besides that, I completely agree.

  • It's not your tap water.

Typical "high" sodium tap water is roughly 100mg/L and the average is going to be in the 20's. Most people consume over 3000 mg of sodium daily. So unless you're drinking gallons upon gallons of water, I'd look at your other foods.

Agree. The most recent monitoring conducted by the City of Austin indicated a Sodium level of 20.9 mg/l.

    Lay off the BBQ.

    Gassius Clay

  • Then again you could just drink beer and hope there is less sodium in that than your tap water. You just might have to take the whole weekend to conduct a "scientific study".
