Thank you Mark Dantonio for taking MSU to the top again.

The first back to back 10+ regular season wins in 115 years of Spartan football. Our defense is awesome, our leadership is solid, we have redshirts waiting in the wings to kick ass, our recruiting is top notch. We won our division, and we're playing in the first B1G Championship Game for the Rose Bowl.

MSU football is on the most solid ground in my life.

    Thank you, Mark Dantonio thumbsup

When I went to school ('04) beating um was the benchmark because the key to our season always seemed to lay with them. We'd win the first 4 games, then lose to um, then slide (or freefall) well below our potential and talent level. We'd break at the first sign of stress and crumble under adversity.

The most impressive thing I have ever seen from our football program was not these last two years (though they warrant it), but our 7 win season in 2007. That season was marked by solid wins and close, heart-breaking loses. Every blow we took from these losses (each by less than 7 points) was absorbed by the team. We bounced back repeatedly and never folded. For me, it marked the end of the SOS era, because we could be beaten, but not broken.

Now, Dantonio has pieces of the puzzle in place and is doing what we had all hoped would happen. We beat um regularly, but also we are no longer defined by that game. We've moved on. We have other big games on our schedule. We play for hardware. For Championships. We don't sit around wait for others to tell us what we are. We prove it on the field every week. We Are Spartans.

  • Thank coach D.

What I like the most about Coach D is his character.

I really liked his message this week (which was actually his dads life) about "completing your circles" and "finishing what you start".

MSU got a good coach in Dantonio and he is similar to Dungy in what a rock he is as a person.

He isn't going to compromise what he believes in no matter what and everyone including future recruits and their parents is buying in. His character and personality are rubbing off and it is translating to Ws

I was talking to my dad on turkey day and asked him "Who was the last MSU FB coach that michigan and other BT fans HATED?" He couldn't really name one, because since the 60s they've all been relative pushovers. Saban had one good year that overshadows a lot of mediocrity that came before it, and everyone else was a failure. Thus, while our success has been awesome, what I REALLY love so much about Coach Dantonio is his no nonsense FUCK YOU attitude to everyone else in the conference, nation, and media. He truly does only care about Michigan State. And with every goal he attains he reminds all of us that there is another one waiting to be grasped. He is a fantastic coach, but he is also an amazing man who clearly inspires these guys to play all out, finds those kids who are overlooked by the star assigners but have the character and tenacity to succeed in the right environment, and has made this program a FAMILY. For me, hearing recruit after recruit use that word to describe our program is the greatest honor, and is what makes me proud to be a Spartan. Coach D has not just remade this program into a winner, he has done everything possible the right way and made it one people want to be a part of.

    Thanks coach.

While Dantonio and his team of coaches owns this success, President Simon (the 1st prezzy to LOVE MSU athletics since Hannah), Hollis and and a unified athletic department have been important catalysts as well. MSU now has a common vision, direction and purpose.

    Congrats to all those involved.

Has President Simon said anything about retiring? Long time Spartans know how important it is to have a president that understands the importance of football to MSU. The long term down turn of football began under Wharton, a president that was embarrassed to be the president of a football factory.

This is the biggest change in my opinion. Dantonio now (and Izzo before him) set about to define Michigan State as they saw fit rather than letting other people determine who we are. I am SO GLAD I no longer have to listen to other people tell me who I am as a graduate of MSU. Our school now speaks for itself via the great leadership we have.

  • Along with everyone else in this thread, I am completely amazed by the transformation of Michigan State football. For my entire life, we've been full of potential, and it's never been fully tapped. Now, in a matter of a few years, everything seems to be coming together. Same Old Spartans, to me, meant the inconsistency -- upsetting No. 1 teams and then losing to what should have been pushovers; one great season followed by several down years; a few talented stars but not enough depth to get us through the slog of the B1G season; a great drive killed by a boneheaded penalty or a strong defensive stand negated by a brain-dead failure.

My theory always was that if MSU could get a decent, solid coach who could coach out some of the mental lapses and recruit a decent amount of talented depth, we could consistently win 8-9 games per year and occasionally challenge for conference crowns. Once that solid foundation was in place, we could then have the chance to make the jump to being part of the conference, and possibly national, elite. I definitely thought this would take a number of years.

What's amazing here is that Dantonio has basically taken us straight to the top. Yes, I realize that we're not yet in the national elite, but we are set up to contend for conference titles every year at this point. And I really think that we are only seeing a tiny hint of what the future holds, as we are only now beginning to reach a team that's fully-stocked by Dantonio's recruiting. Now, add Dantonio's obvious coaching ability to a personnel situation where we can redshirt virtually our entire incoming class (particularly in the trenches), and where we're getting much more talented, on average, players, Dantonio has a chance to really create a powerhouse.

Remember, it wasn't until Izzo's fourth season when he proved that he was building a program that had a chance to be part of the national elite. And that's in basketball, a sport where a small nucleus of players can turn a program around.

Now you go too far. Biggie has a better record and a NC and an athletic building named for him. So does Duffy (all three things). Both have undefeated seasons (plural) on their resumes, something MD has yet to do. Dantonio has the opportunity to get on that platform eventually, BUT IS NOT THERE YET. Great coach, and yours is the only post in the thread I'd counter. THRILLED with the program progress and position under MD. But best in history? You're Young!!!!

It amazes me how much other fan bases now seem to hate MSU and MD. I go to Iowa's and Wiscy's boards and he's like the anti-Christ. Obviously UM fans hate him but that's to be expected. Clearly he's doing something right.

Thanks - my appreciation is greatly enhanced by my dad - he was a freshman in 1965 and saw the glory days first hand...he was at the 10-10 tie, the 66 Rose Bowl, in the endzone watching Levi run for glory right at him, and on and on and on. My first games were at the end of Duffy, my first memories are Kirk Streaking down the sideline, and on and on and on. I've waited a LONG time for this, and in many ways my dad has waited even longer. In that same conversation I mentioned above, we both mentioned the family atmosphere attracting the right recruits and how that reflects on the university as a whole. I suppose I could have given a bit more credit to Perles above, but to me he is one of those most responsible for delaying this resurgence with his BS and selfishness.

Coach Dantonio is in many ways the very personification of MSU Football. He has remade it in his image and brought respectability, character, and accountability to a program that had sunk so low I had begun to think it was irredeemable. I truly believe we are on the brink of greatness, and that next year will be better than this, and 2013 and beyond will be years where we are in the national title picture. 10 wins is going to be the norm. And a roster full of kids we can be proud of will be the ones accomplishing this.

I'm in between you and your father. I grew up in Lansing, and I was at many MSU games where "Dump Duffy" signs were being flown around the stadium. I, too, marveled at Kirk Gibson playing like a man among boys--that dude was just so fast, big, and mean. But, I honestly never thought I'd see this day when our team was repeating as B1G leaders with a coach and administration on the same page. I'll never forget Dantonio in that news conference totally pissed at the disrespect UM just heaped on us after a very fortunate comeback on their part. He was prophetic that day, and he willed this success. Other schools may hate him because he's unabashed in his support and loyalty for MSU--but, we are lucky to have him. thumbsup

  • Kudos to Dantonio. Never imagined this level of success this quickly. Truly remarkable when you think about it. I mean, it's not like we have the resources to compete year-in-and-out w/ Michigan, OSU, Penn State, and now Nebraska. Hell, Wisconsin is even up on us over the past 20 years! To be able to not only compete, but beat those teams is just phenominal all things considered.

Last year I think I was thinking 8-4 and this year 7-5. Looks like the days of the spartan yo-yo will be gone for good. Hell, even if we go 6-6 next year I won't be all that upset---dude has clearly earned at least 1 more "down" year--ala Izzo-style.
