  • Channel 53 is being dropped by the Dish Network beginning Thursday and I couldn't be happier. In fact I called Dish to support their action. Apparently Channel 53 is asking Dish for a 200% fee increase in order for Dish to continue providing their signal. This is unbelievable coming from a station that does it on the cheap. The station has no local newscast and little locally produced shows . And they're supposed to be a major network affiliate! Also, I notice they carry a lot of half-hour paid ads. Sinclair Broadcasting is the owner. They also own another minor station in the Lansing market, Channel 37. Dish dropped that station earlier this week for the same reason.

I'm sure it will be replaced with another 24x7 commercial channel.

This. I will never forgive them for causing me to miss the new season of Breaking Bad, never!

And, as an added bonus, I see that the new season of Hell on Wheels premiered this week. EFF YOU DISH!!!! They better bring AMC back before the new season of The Walking Dead starts or I am seriously going to be pissed.

Just about all my favorite programs I watch on reg. tv is on that station(NCIS and Person Of Interest). If this is true they better get it taken care of soon or I'll be switching. Doesn't CBS carry some football as well?frustrated

  • If I could get BTN, ESPN and FSD some other way, I wouldn't need cable or dish.

Why don't they just move it up a tier and let the people who are willing to pay extra for it do so.

Not sure if you can still do this. But I got a free Roku from Dish by calling and bitching about them dropping AMC.

Here's the thread from Slick Deals with info on how to do it.

I hear that. Been wanting to do this for the longest time and trying to watch games on justin.tv or other sites is not going to work.

Exactly. For everything else there would be OTA or internet, and scrapping the DVR and using network websites to watch shows I missed. The live sports is really the killer in the deal.

Noticed the same thing last night as I was watching Big Brother on my Hopper. Maybe I can get dish to give me a credit for the cost of a digital antenna if they drop this channel too.

I have been a customer and an advocate of Dish for over 8 years, but this shit is getting ridiculous. The squabble with F/X last year and now the same thing with AMC and possibly my local CBS station. If this would have happened three months ago I doubt I would have signed another 2-year contract. no

Thanks for the heads up. I just called and they are no longer offering the free roku. What they are doing now is offering a credit if you buy the full season of either Breaking Bad or Hell on Wheels on either Amazon or iTunes. However, you can only get one credit, even if you buy both shows. The guy told me it would be a $35 credit, but looking online there are only 8 episodes of Breaking Bad this season, and the episodes are $2.99 each on Amazon for the HD version.

I also got a credit for 1/2 off my premium movie channels for 6 months, which is about $20/month. So I got that going for me, which is nice.

Bang. The ONLY reason I have Dish. I and see down the road, B1G network being made available on the interwebs. I can live without ESPN--not without B1G network.

  • Seems you can't win. I live in the Lansing outlaying area and have DirecTV. NO HD locals. However, I bought an AM-21 which goes between your OTA antenna and your DTV receiver. You set up the AM-21 with 2 zip codes and it merges the locals from those areas onto your DTV receiver, so when looking at the guide, you have BOTH the DTV supplied SD and the OTA supplied HD locals.

Works fine, EXCEPT when setting up a remote record by smartphone or internet. You can only record the actual DTV supplied channels. So, if I'm out of town and want to record a Lansing local, I get the SD one.

An upside is I get BOTH Lansing and GR locals in HD. Used to be more relevant when the Lions were blacked out on 47, as I could get them on 17 in GR.

BOTH DTV and Dish have experienced problems with re-negotiating certain channels. DTV had problems with AMC last year and Viacom (Comedy Central) this year. I called and complained. Got a $5/rebate each month for 3 months and free Showtime for 6 months. Dexter is coming back next month so that's good. Plus, 3 days after I got the deal, Viacom settled.

Because apparently they had a pretty big falling out. This was a huge story a month or so ago in the media markets. AMC was asking a little extra money because of their recent success and dish refused. From there, it escalated in the personal territory era. Now they don't want to do anything with each other lol.

Dish and channel three settled their differences so channel three will remain on Dish.

  • Regarding the ongoing battle between AMC and its sister networks and Dish: Dish seems to have some leverage on this. Apparently they can get a very accurate number on the viewers of each network. In the this case, the numbers were so low - especially with the IFC channel - that they consider the fight with them worth it. The New York Times reported this a week or two ago. A search of the Times website should turn up this article.

i called the number on the link you provided and they gave me 1-888-873-5765 (Special Retention Team)

    1 Roku player
$30 credit so I can purchase the episodes from amazon through the roku player
    $5/month for 6 months

Worth the call, I really like dish and when they hear I was "canceling" they were more than helpful to keep me on board, should get the Roku player in a couple days

  • Looks like Dish and WLAJ have reached a deal, and they extended the current agreement by two weeks to get everything finalized on the new deal.

So we're not losing ABC53 (or 3?) after all.
