The Dark Knight Rises

It appears to give more details now, especially that it follows the "Knightfall" storyline quite a bit...

The scene with Bane catching Bats' punch is straight out of the comic book.

I wonder if he already knows. I hope so.

I've always assumed that fight takes place in the renovated Batcave. So yea, he knows.

  • Just now got caught up on all the trailers and teasers. Holy shit, I'm psyched to see just how everything plays out.

And the more I watch him, the more I dig Bane - he just oozes "top-notch mother-fucking badass" in that latest trailer.

I never thought Nolan could top The Joker but it appears that he has done it.

I hope he and only he knows and that he never tweeted it...that would suck some royal ass because even though he kills the bad guy, everyone else knows and then batman needs to go and kill the entire world.

Does Bane look like the type of dude who tweets? I think the secret is safe with him.

Although if he did, I would totally follow him.

  • So I just got done reading "Knightfall." Pretty fucking good.

What I loved was Bruce trying to find himself again, training once more to find the will to be Batman and beat Jean-Paul.

Bane was a pretty cookie-cutter villain, though. I think Nolan's version might be the best, definitely the most filled-out version in terms of story.

Did you read Batman: Venom as well?

Knightfall makes a lot more sense if you've read that, and the Vengeance of Bane one-shot.

  • Allow me to preface this statement: I've loved every single one of Nolan's movies all the way back to Memento, and tDK was extremely close to making my top 5 favorite movies all-time (only missed because the Joker didn't blow up the goddamn boats). But I think months of positively absurd excitement about tDKR has finally caused me to overthink it. I worry about the third installment of any franchise--hell, most recently Spiderman 3 and X-men 3 managed to be two of the worst movies in history. And I just can't help thinking...how on EARTH would there ever be a plausible scenario in which hundreds of policemen armed with billy clubs brawl with hundreds of unarmed thugs in the middle of a street?? Has anyone else wondered about this?

That said, the early reviews are extremely encouraging, and I can't wait to see it opening weekend.

The city is basically cut off, the bridges being nuked isolating it. An element of the Batman comic book story "No Man's Land" in which the city is so screwed the government washes its hands of it. Not sure if that makes it into this story, that piece of it.

The police and the citizens who didn't flee fight for their city, led by Batman. That's why Batman is out in the daylight, which almost never happens in the books and has not happened previously in these movies.

It's a movie about a guy dressed up as a bat. Realism is pretty much out the window. But Nolan has grounded this about as much as anyone could in pseudo-reality.

In the featurette, there is a part where Blake and Gordon are driving, and a radio message says "Citizens of Gotham... we have not abandoned you." Gordon says, "It means we're on our own."

"When the city is in ashes, you have my permission to die"

THAT"S bane, not the roided out goon from the shitty previous movie.

Very very good points, thank you. I confess my first reaction to the street fight was a flashback to X-men 3, in which a massive army of assembled mutants is somehow incapable of managing anything more impressive than charging with their fists raised while two of them launch flaming cars (why would projectile cars on fire be more damaging than just...projectile cars?). It was just the epitome of the completely absurd and ultimately meaningless third act. So under the scenario you described, in which the city is completely isolated and Bane has gained control, I could imagine policemen being forced to ally with Batman and mount a resistance. That still doesn't entirely explain how no one ends up with a gun, but I'll certainly wait and see.

I would counter, though, that while a superhero movie is, by definition, not supposed to exist in any plausible reality, Nolan has done a great job of firmly rooting the Batman series in a sort of plausible mythology. That is, if you assume that a city can be so overwhelmed with crime that it is utterly unredeemable, that a wealthy businessman can enhance himself enough to battle for the city's soul, and that forces of evil exist and are attempting to undermine the fabric of society, then the storyline actually proceeds rather plausibly. I'm firmly convinced that the vast majority of this film will be just as gripping as the rest of Nolan's work, but I'm just hoping that he doesn't fall into the very common trap of trying to conclude a series with a sort of over-the-top third act.

Excellent take. I see Nolan trying to make the greatest spectacle possible while tying up the ends of Wayne's story. TDK was about Dent and Joker. This one seems centered on Wayne. I am sure he also wants to flip the bird to the critics one more time, showing that he can make an intelligent blockbuster and wrap a trilogy Lord of the Rings style rather than the way the Spiderman/X Men series wrapped. Tall order, but the guy is good.

Hell yeah. One more thing to add: maybe I won't like the ending, but the clip of Batman desperately sucking down air and trying to psych himself up as Bane walks toward him is reason enough to go see it. Just beautiful filmwork right there.

DR, how did you read it? I've been looking around on Amazon and there's like 5 different versions each with multiple parts. I haven't been able to figure out which "Part 1" goes with which "Part 2", etc....driving me nuts.
