The Greatest Bar in E.L...

  • Ah, memories, Springer (as in Jerry) Hour on Friday at Crunchy's $0.25 drafts.

At 5 minutes before the end everybody ordered a handful per person. That must have been fun for the wait staff.

  • Crunchy's is the only bar in EL that I still have fun at...I have a lot of great memories (albeit hazy ones) at the others, but I would not feel comfortable going back.

  • During my time at MSU I loved going to Lou Ha’s before it got to crowded. You couldn’t beat $.99 long islands and free pizza bar…and the pizza was actually pretty good. Still annoyed they moved it. My other favorite bar was Dublin Square.

  • Crunchys wins hands down, but I don't think the old dungeon BDubs has been getting enough love here. I think they used to have 10 cent wing night if I recall. It was so much better than the family restaurant they have now. I too enjoyed 'Rama at the Riv on Thursdays, and Ricks Happy Hour on Fridays. I loved the Peanut Barrel, but for some reason, I didn't end up there as often as I would have liked.

I was in Surrender Dorothy, which was called Never By Twelve for most of my tenure with the band. Playing to a packed Rick's crowd was a phenomenally good time. We played almost exclusively at Rick's and Small Planet. Groove spoon was a great band; played a gigs with their drummer who sat in with us. Great memory was playiing at Rick's after Goober and the Peas. Hay everywhere. We played a New Year's gig at Ricks with a bunch of bands incld YMI and Verve Pipe who I wasn't crazy about.

Nice, my boy Allen Quail. Great drummer and Groove Spoon was a super fun Band back in the Day..

This thread brings back some fun memories, and for the life of me I cannot pinpoint why I loved the dungeon B-dubs. You walked down a huge staircase (ala Ricks) and when you turned to the right, there was a pinball machine next to where you ordered. Then you looked out onto a cavernous space that wasn't particularly charming or well decorated, but yet it worked. My passion for heat was cultivated there.

  • Alright ill throw my 2 cents in here. As a college student I really only went to Harper's because a bunch of my buddies were servers and I got to drink for free, and BW3's before it moved upstairs. Those were really the only ones I ever went to in school.

Now being an "adult" and living in the Haslett area Peanut Barrel is awesome for a Friday lunch on the patio but thats about it. Crunchy's is awesome for dinner and a great selection of beer. Dublin is getting bad with the douche frat kids (even though I was one back in the day), haven't step food in Harper's since college, and have never been in the Landshark. If I am going to watch a sporting even ill go to BW3's.

The Riv, PT's, Ricks and the others I'm not a big fan of.

  • Different Bars for Different things. Seems like Crunchy's and Dagwoods were always a stop for food and drink, really never went just to hang and drink. Also no real ability to get laid or watch sports at either. Dagwoods is a real popular spot with Professors, used to go down there with some Faculty all the time.

Paul Reveres is a good little bar as well.

On a side note, do they still have that ridiculous pissing trough at Rick's?

Woody's Oasis. Where you can go ponder life over an excellent selection of beers, take in some delicious food and observe the impressive amount of flies throughout the entire restaurant.

What more could you possible want?

Plus if you go to Woody's you can get some Around the Worlds and get pretty fucked up.

When I go back to EL now, I usually go to Woody's, Crunchy's and Beggars. We'll usually end up at the Riv, but it's not nearly as fun anymore as it used to be.

I get on people when they mention the suburban cookie cutter Buffalo Wild Wings (including the one in EL now) as B dubs.

Not only have they done away with the curry wings from back in the day that would stain your fingers tips yellow for roughly a week, but it's just not the same outside of that windowless cavern that was constantly threatened by an overflowing toilet from Small Planet upstairs.

The place now is Wild Wings, the craphole in the basment was Bdubs, IMO.

that's basically what happened. There would be 4 or 5 dudes pissing in the trough, a dude pissing in the sink, and probably a really drunk guy or two just pissing right on the floor. Ah, the good old days. IIRC there was also a one can toilet on the other side of Ricks as well that was always nuked out.

I cringe as I recall a poster's story of walking into that bathroom to see some chick getting plowed on said floor.

And we have a thread on India being disgusting.....

When did anyone ever go out for the night to Crunchy's, Beggars, or Peanut Barrel unless it was 4-6PM?

  • Now that I am an older alum, I make sure I always get up to Crunchy's, but when I was a student there it was for sure The Riv. I still enjoy the Riv, but I appreciate beer a lot more and being able to get a craft beer is nice these days.

I've always wondered why there is a real toilet in there. If the situation presented itself where I couldn't make it anywhere else, I think I would intentionally shit my pants over dumping in ricks.

I wish this bar was hoppin, since I currently live 2 blocks from it. But usually its very boring, definitely not a college bar atmosphere, not very good food, cranky bartenders, and crappy pool table.

  • I'm probably gonna go out to a bar this Friday for the first time in EL, thinking either Rick's, Dublin, Landshark, etc

  • Now that I've been here for a few months, I definitely think Crunchy's has the best food, Rick's is great for one-night stands, Harper's for getting drunk on the cheap and watching the game. Harper's is probably the best overall as it's relatively clean, hot waitstaff, cheap drinks, dancing if you're interested in that sort of thing, etc. Rick's is the place to be 12-2am, before that it's pretty empty. Seems like it's the place everyone ends up at. Crazy how busy the bars get even during the summer, gonna be insane when all the students are back in a month and a half or so. The Riv is alright, from my experience it's a lot more expensive but it does have darts and jenga.

College bars are great. This speaks volumes as to how cheap they can be.

I remember Dagwoods. It was a typical corner bar in Michigan with regulars. Not to many college kids there. This was 15 years ago though. It may be different today.

No, that is still true, since the 1940s, when it was founded, because East Lansing was dry.
