The Most Disturbing Films You've Seen

  • "Funny Games".

    Teddy Brewster

  • Not sure if this was mentioned earlier or not, but the movie The Woman was by far the most disturbing movie I have ever seen. Takes fucked up to a whole new level.

    Francis Whitman

  • "Martyrs" Whoever made that film is fucked up....period

  • What has been seen cannot be unseen.

Reality provides more disturbing cinema than imaginations have been able to make us believe. It's hard for me to watch a "movie" and get disturbed by it because in the end I know it's fake.

People have brought up Old Boy so here's a few other asian films that lean towards the demented...

    Mother (Madea)
    The Chaser
    I Saw the Devil
    Audition
    A Tale of Two Sisters
    Confession
    Bedevilled

I like a lot of new asian cinema and really dug all of these. Especially, I Saw the Devil, Mother and The Chaser.

One more to add to this list is The Yellow Sea aka The Murderer. It's the second film by the guy who did The Chaser and it's one of the best movies I saw last year. A lot of folks have mentioned Old Boy and if you dug that, you'll love both The Chaser & The Yellow Sea.

My favorite film I saw last year was Bullhead. It's a Belgian film that centers around a mafia dealing in illegal bovine hormone. It was one of the five nominees for Best Foriegn Picture and is brilliant. While not a consistently disturbing film, there are a few parts that are brutal. Especially for dudes.

  • I didn't see Men Behind the Sun listed, so I'll say that one. I haven't seen it and don't really like horror movies but it looks pretty fucked up.

I skipped to all the talked about parts on cannibal holocaust, just looked like a b movie, was I supposed to see the whole thing or something?

Serbian Film looks horrible, no way I'd ever watch that. Crazy.

  • To this day, I can't/won't watch Event Horizon. My college roommate and I decided to watch it really late at night on the dorm movie channel. That was a big mistake.

  • Rise of the Foot Soldier
maybe not that disturbing but certainly brutal and violent as hell

"Irreversible," a French film is definitely up there... Human Centipede and Cannibal Holocaust are probably at the top.

Irreversible is an Italian film and it is the most disturbing film you will ever see IMO. Salo is more campy and cartoonish, but Irreversible is so realistic in its portrayal of violence it will stay with you for weeks. You cannot even compare a movie like Human Centipede to Irreversible, one is meant to be shocking and almost comical, the other is meant to be the most realistic and brutal portrayal of violence even seen on the screen.

Do not see Irreversible!!!! It is that bad, it is sick, there is nothing fake looking about the violence, it just makes your stomach turn.

I thought Martyrs was a great movie. The violence was bad, but it was part of the film, I think it evokes deep emotions in people when a woman is getting beat over and over like she was at the end of the film after she got captured. It was more difficult for me to watch the beatings than when they skinned her, but this was a good movie IMO.

  • Has anyone seen the David Fincher film Zodiac (2007). It's far from the most disturbing film of all time, but there are several scenes worthy of the title.

One scene that really stuck out to me was when the young mother was driving with her baby at night. She's tailed by a stranger who claims that one of her wheels had become loose. She thanks him as he fixes her tire. When she turns the car on again she notices that her wheels are even worse and about to fall off. When she stops for the second time, he pulls over as well and offers her a ride. Amazingly, she agrees.

Then the dialogue goes something like this:

Zodiac killer: Ma'am, do you mind rolling down your window?

    Woman: Why?

Zodiac killer: Before I kill you, I'm going to throw your baby out the window.

You're aware that was a true story, right?

  • Has anyone seen the French film "Inside"? It's supposed to be pretty hardcore. For a horror film, it has a 7 on IMDB, which is unheard of. I just rented it and am curious to know what I'm in store for.

I agree, this was very unsettling. Especially how Tim Roth's character just kind of gives up before his wife (Naomi Watts). Made me feel really vulnerable about projecting myself in his shoes and having to protect a family......very unsettling

If you liked the remake, then check out the original. You won't be disappointed.

Home invasion horrors tap into my fears the most.

Then you should (or shouldn't) see Henry - Portrait of a Serial Killer. The home invasion scene itself is terrifying, and the entire movie is disturbing. My wife was mad when she "caught" me watching it.

Agreed. A great film I've seen dozens of times.

The truly chilling scene, imo, is when Henry tries telling Becky how he killed his mother. He fucks his story up 3 different times: with a baseball bat, through stabbing and from shooting her.

The guy cannot remember how he killed his mother. Just shows how you truly empty the guy was.

And Otis trying to fuck his own sister...wtf? The acting is so amateurish and creepy that it seems like you are watching real life scenes unfold through a family room window in Taylor.
